The plants biological clock gave the 7signal for these things to happen. At dawn most birds wake up and start singing. When the sun goes 8down , they go to sleep. The belief that household help is only for the 2 women is a “stubborn myth”. We need to view hiring help 3 a “time-management tool for busy people.” 4on the other hand, there are also costs 5 to not hiring help: health problems like 6, lack of time for exercise, and sleep 7; lost income where the hours 8 cleaning could have been used to 9 career goals; and the strain on your marriage that could lead to money spent on counseling or even a 10.Part IV Reading Comprehension Passage 1How men first learned to invent words is unknown. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the happy and sad events of our past; the more we read and learn, the larger the number of words that mean something to us becomes.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to out minds and feelings. This attractive use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and, by their position and association, can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech dull and silly.1. There are similarities, of course, but the policemen dont think much of them. The first difference is that a policemens real life centers around the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down a narrow street after someone he wants to talk to.Little of his time is spent in chatting to pretty girls or in dramatic confrontations (对峙) with desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, unimportant people who are guilty or not of stupid, minor crimes. Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as hes arrested, the story is over, in real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks where failure to produce results reflects on the fame of the police little effort is spent on searching.Having made an arrest, a detective (侦探) really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and, to do that, he often has to gather a lot of different evidence. So, as well as being overworked, a detective has to be out at all hours of the day and night interviewing his witness and persuading them, usually against their own interests, to help him.1.What does the first paragraph tell us about policemen?A) They often watch TV.B) They like watching TV.C) They are too busy to watch TV.D) They hate seeing themselves on TV.2.Why does the writer mention a lawyer in the second paragraph?A) To show that a lawyers job is more comfortable.B) To emphasize that policemen are physically strong.C) To compare a lawyers job with policemens.D) To indicate that a lawyers job is less important than a policemans.3.What do real policemen do at work?A) They often deal with robbers and thieves.B) They talk with a lot of victims and visitors.C) They dont deal with serious crimes very often.D) The usually stay in their office studying cases.4.What does the passage say about a detective?A) His job is to make arrests.B) He is good at finding criminals.C) He has to prove his case in court.D) He visits and helps his witnesses.5.What is the main idea of the passage?A) It is hard for policemen to do their job well.B) Policemen keep in touch with a lot of people.C) Policemen are people that we admire and respect.D) Real policemens life is different from what is shown on TV.Passage 3Some researchers have indicated that the vast increase of women in the workforce may decrease marriage chances. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. On the other hand, womens financial state may also encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man were important in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to postpone marriage because the couple cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy rebounds(回弹), the number of marriages also rises. Coincident(一致)with the increase in women working outside the home is the increase in divorce rates. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wifes work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider(养家者)may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible. Stresses grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. Considering high unemployment, inflationary problems(通货膨胀), and slow growth in real earnings, a working wife can increase household income and relieve some of these pressing financial burdens. By raising a familys standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her familys financial and emotional stability. Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife without a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of womens inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. With higher earning capacity and status occupations outside of the home comes the capacity to exercise power within the family. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities. 1) The word “hypothesis” (Line 2, Para.1) is closest in meaning to “_”.A. assumption B. signal C. idea D. clue2) It is said in the passage that when the economy slides, _. In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent. D.
