They live together in crowded cities and work together for the good of all. Ants are insects of this kind. They are social insects, living together in colonies. They build their houses to suit the climate of the place where they live, and they live almost everywhere in the world. Like people, ants distribute the work to be done. Some worker ants get food and feed it to young ants. They are like farmers gathering food for people to eat. When the young ants eat the food, they give out a liquid that the grown-up ants can eat. In some colonies, the ants feed liquid food to a few special workers. These workers store it in their stomachs, which become very large. They spend all their time in the nest giving out liquid to whoever needs it, just like the person who runs a store. Ants are ruled by a queen ant. She spends all her time laying eggs, and the worker ants take care of her. New queens come to rule a colony in many different ways. One kind of ant queen can go into another colony and kill the old queen. Another kind can take some workers with her from her mothers nest and start a new colony of her own. Another kind of ant queen takes her young with her and hides in some other colony. She gets some of the workers to feed her young instead of the old queens young. In this way she becomes strongest in the colony, and she rules. Some ants form armies and fight battles with other colonies, but not all ants are fierce. Some live in peace with their neighbours. 46. What is the main idea of this passage? A. There are different kinds of ants.B. Ants live very much like human beings. C. Ants live alone. D. Ants live as long as human beings. 47. She lived with her parents on the outskirts of a small village in North Dakota, in the U.S. The winters are long and cold in North Dakota, and Sally sometimes felt very isolated (隔离的) from the outside world. However, Sally had a computer in her bedroom. Late at night, when she had finished her homework, she used to get onto the Internet, log into a chat room and join a chat group. One night, around midnight, she started chatting to someone using the name Zanda. Sally and Zanda soon realised they had a lot in common. So they agreed to leave the chat room and talk to each other more privately using an instant message service called ICQ. Sally discovered that Zanda was an eighteen-year-old boy from Sydney, Australia. His real name was Ben. They sent each other messages for about an hour, and exchanged e-mail addresses. Over the next year Sally and Ben e-mailed each other regularly, and also communicated through ICQ. Then one day Sally decided she wanted to visit Ben in Australia. Sallys parents were very nervous about the idea. However, after talking to Bens parents by phone and e-mail, they agreed that she could go. Six months later the two friends met face to face for the first time. This friendship between two people thousands of miles apart was possible because the Internet links computers all over the world. It has been described as the most revolutionary technological development since the telephone. In a short time, it has changed how people communicate with each other, how they do business, and how they get information. Many people still find it amazing that two people who live as far apart as Sally and Ben can communicate with each other so easily. Questions 5153: Answer the following questions or complete the sentences. 51. Sally and Ben communicated by _ . 52. When did they meet face to face for the first time? 53. The underlined word it in the fourth paragraph refers to _ . C Questions 5456: Answer the following questions or complete the sentences. 54. Another word for jealousy would be _ . 55. She is the only woman to have skied down Wyomings Grand Teton, one of the steepest slopes in the United States. She loves extreme sports so much that she is also an ice climber, a paraglider (滑降伞运动员), and a downhill mountain biker. Extreme sports have helped Ulmer gain the self-confidence she didnt have as a child. She was alone a lot. So skiing, which she started at age seven, became a way to express herself. She skied a lot through her teens, joining the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team in 1985. Ulmers great competence led her to become one of the first skiers to join in a new sport: extreme skiingdoing stunts while skiing down extremely steep, difficult slopes. When she left the U.S. ski team in 1992, she entered the first extreme skiing championships and won the womens division. After that experience, Ulmer became a professional extreme skier. At 34, she was called the original goddess of extreme and the best female extreme skier in the world. In Powder magazines 2001 list of the 50 best skiers in North America, Ulmer was the only woman in the top 10. Ulmer is an example of the best risk taker. However, taking risks often results in injuries. At one point in her career, Ulmer had knee surgery five times in four years and was in rehab (康复治疗) constantly. The more time you spend taking risks, the more chances you have of getting hurt or killed, says Ulmer. Sometimes, however, things do get out of control. Ulmers scariest moment was surviving a series of 100-to-200-mph avalanches (雪崩). After that experience, Ulmer says she has become a little more careful. Shes also trying to do new things. In addition to extreme skiing, she gives speeches to young people and business executives. She doesnt suggest that they take risks, but she says, I tell them to go big. Thats a reference to doing a big jump and catching big air while skiing, but it applies to everyday life, too. I talk about the importance of going big in whatever you do. Dont do it halfway. Questions 57 and 58: Complete the following sentences. 57. Kristen Ulmer is different from most other athletes because _ . 58. The word in Paragraph 3 means a very dangerous action that shows great strength and skill is _ . Questions 5961: The table below shows Ulmers different experiences in different years. Castro works behind the counter at McDonalds. Speed is an important part of her work life. Fast-food counter workers are expected to serve customers in less than a minute. At McDonalds they say, Work fast or you dont last. Are McDonalds workers lucky to have their jobs? Or are they being exploited? The answer depends on who you talk to. McDonalds does many good things. For example, no other company hires more young people than McDonalds. More than half of its workers are under 20 years old. McDonalds also has a good record of hiring minority workers. Thirteen percent of its workers are black. This is better than any other U.S. company. But the burger house has its critics as well. The pay bothered Edward Rodriguez. He worked for nearly a year at a Los Angeles McDonalds. During that time he got only one 10-cent raise. (64) I used to joke that working for McDonalds is the closest thing to slave labour in the U.S. today, he says. Today, most McDonalds pay about $5.00 an hour. They hire new workers constantly. The restaurant has no other choice because 70 percent of its workers quit or are fired every year. But McDonalds also gets its share of praise. Its best workers move up quickly. Just talk to 17-year-old Ameer Abdur-Razaaq of Harlem, New York City. They call me Young Crew Chief around my block, he says. Where else can I go at my age and be in charge of this many people? He sees the job as the first step in his career. (65) However, most McDonalds crew members never make it to manager because the job pressure is so intense and the rewards so few. As one worker put it, They expect a lot and they dont pay you much. Questions 6263: Answer the following questions. 62. What does the sentence Work fast or you dont last. in Paragraph 1 mean? 63. How to explain the underlined word exploited in English? Questions 64 and 65: Translate the underlined sentences in the passage into Chinese.
