the classic tv production, one scene in particular impressed me: when mrs darling puts her children into bed. as she turns off the last of the night lights, she takes one last look at the bedroom and says, “dear night lights protect my sleeping children.” as a mother, i know how much she loves her children.it has been several weeks since we took our daughter to college and she seems to be adjusting well after a short period of homesickness. for us, though, its another story. like most parents, i love checking in on my children at night. but now shes gone, and i find nighttime the hardest. i miss her most at night.in my neighborhood, most of the parents whose kids are off to college are dealing with similar melancholy. my husband is filled with anxiety. one friend talked about getting this sick feeling in her stomach as she prepared for the college dropoff. we complained that many of us were too busy to truly enjoy being with our children while we had them.for us moms, seeing toy story 3 only made the sadness worse as we watched the character andy, who is the same age as our kids, say goodbye to his childhood as he prepares to leave for college. and its not just “firsttime” parents like me. two moms who have kids already well into college said the separation didnt get any easier. “you feel like something has been taken away from inside you,” said one of them.i imagine things will get easier with time, especially as i see my daughter adjust to college life. meanwhile, as i keep my cellphone close to me in bed and text my daughter goodnight and sweet dreams every night, i like to think that messages serve as a night light that keeps her safe.4. the writer was deeply impressed by the scene in peter pan because _a. she watched the scene with her daughterb. the scene was very exciting and interestingc. the scene taught her and her daughter a good lessond. the scene showed a mothers deep love for her children5. after her daughter went to college, the writer _a. didnt get used to the change for a long timeb. often cried as she missed her daughter so muchc. realized she hadnt done enough for the daughterd. failed to have a good sleep every night6. what is the underlined word “melancholy” in paragraph 3 similar in meaning to?a. happiness. b. anger.c. sadness. d. excitement.7. we can infer that watching toy story 3 _a. made the dysfunctional (怪异的) relationship with clothes. their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. this helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as highclass mens suits, ceremonial costumes, and innovative (革新的) street fashion. in other words, we english dress best when we are “in uniform”you may be surprised that i am including “innovative street fashion” in the category of the uniform. surely the parrothaired punks (朋克摇滚乐迷) or the victorian vampire goths are being original, not following rules? its true that they all look different and eccentric (古怪的) but in fact they all look eccentric exactly in the same way. they are wearing a uniform. the only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone elses opinion. however, it is true that the styles invented by young english people are much more eccentric than any other nations street fashion. we may not be individually eccentric, apart from the queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.another “rule” of behavior i had discovered was that it is very important for the english not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. however, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too seriously.the goths, in their scary black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. but when i got into conversation with them, i discovered that they too had a sense of humor. i was once chatting to a goth in the full vampire costumewith a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrothair. i saw he was also wearing a tshirt with “goth”. “why are you wearing that?” i asked. “in case you dont realize im a goth.” he answered, pretending to be serious. we both burst out laughing.8. what can we know about the english people?a. they need rules to dress well. b. they are in need of uniforms.c. they are creative in general. d. they lead the world trend.9. who is individually eccentric in dressing?a. a highclass man. b. a parrothaired punk.c. the queen. d. the fashion innovator.10. which of the following can best describe the goths?a. they dress badly.b. they dress in an amusing way.c. they are unable to laugh at the way they dress.d. they are less fashionable than the other english people.11. what may be the best title for the text?a. how the english dressb. how the english admire fashionc. why the english like uniformsd. why the english are eccentric in dress【语篇解读】作者以自己的所见所感给我们介绍了英国各类人穿衣的特点及其共性和个性。8. a细节理解题。根据第一段their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them.可知,英国人在穿衣方面需要规则束缚,故选a。9. trees are important to our life. they provide us with food, wood and most importantly, oxygen. now there is one more thing we can add to this listblocking out harmful bacteria in water.the discovery was made by some scientists and high school students who were seeking for a natural water filter(过滤器)one that could help people in developing countries that dont have access to modern water systems.the researchers, led by rohit karnik, a professor, decided to turn to trees for help because they were able to allow liquid to flow through while blocking out air bubbles (气泡)they began by cutting 1.5inchwide sections of tree bark from the branch of a white pine tree. the researchers then tested the woods filtering ability by pouring water containing red dye particles (染料颗粒) of different sizes through. to their surprise, they found it was effective in trapping all the particles. encouraged, the team did another experiment, this time with water containing bacteria. sure enough, the bark held back 99%of the bacteria, allowing only 1% to flow through.mr. karnik said the bark was able to filter water containing much smaller particles. this means that it can be used to get rid of most of the bacteria. however, what troubles them is that tree bark cannot hold back viruses, which tend to be much smaller.though the experiment is successful, we must remember one thingthe bark only works when damp. this means that before this natural filter can be put into practical use, the researchers will have to figure out how to keep the bark damp, or find a way to keep the barks great filtering ability even when its dry.but the study is not done. the researchers plan on testing other types of trees, including those flowering trees. they think those may be more effective in trapping smaller particles and even viruses.12. how will the discovery affect the world?a. no harmful bacteria will be found in water.b. there will be no water pollution around the world.c. more pine trees will be planted around the world.d. clean water will be more accessible in developing countries.13. what problem troubles the researchers when using the tree bark as a water filter?a. viruses cannot be prevented.b. tree bark should be wet.c. its hard to remove air bubbles.d. not all bacteria can be held back.14. why does the team plan to do other experiments?a. to find other natural water filters.b. to improve the filtering ability of other trees.c. to find a way to keep the bark wet.d. to test the filtering ability of other trees.15. in which column of a newspaper can we read this text?a. culture. b. science. c. lifestyle. d. society.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文,讲了树对于我们生活的重要性。 13.
