(16分)It happens every spring. Flowers come out everywhere on the same day. But how do plants “know” when to flower? For years, it has been a difficult question for scientists. But a US research group may have finally answered itthe secret lies in a protein(蛋白质)called FKF1. This helps plants to know when the days become long and when they get short. Then they can tell the seasons are changing.Researchers found the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis(拟南芥). It is sensitive(敏感的)to sunlight, and can be made active by sunlight.Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon all year. If there is no light at this time, for example in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein wont be active. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be made active by day light and the plants “know”it is time to flower. “If there is light in the late afternoon, plants will know that the days are getting longer and that it is the best time for flowers to come out,”explained Takato Imaizumi, leader of study. But when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short, plants wont flower.Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that it is the same with many other plants, including crops such as rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry. If we can control when flowers come out, we might be able to increase crop production,”Imaizumi said.(1)The passage is mainly about _.A . howplants “know” when to flowerB . what people can do with plantsC . how seasons are changingD . what kind of plant Arabidopsis is(2)The passage is mainly about _.A . howplants “know” when to flowerB . what people can do with plantsC . how seasons are changingD . what kind of plant Arabidopsis is(3)Scientists found the FKF1 protein when they were _.A . answering a question B . controlling the clours of flowersC . planting flowers in the gardenD . studying a plant called Arabidopsis(4)Scientists found the FKF1 protein when they were _.A . answering a question B . controlling the clours of flowersC . planting flowers in the gardenD . studying a plant called Arabidopsis(5)The best time for flowers to come out is when _.A . it rains in springB . there is light in the late afternoonC . it is getting dark D . the sun goes down early(6)The best time for flowers to come out is when _.A . it rains in springB . there is light in the late afternoonC . it is getting dark D . the sun goes down early(7)Scientists believe that _.A . other plants also know when to flowersB . flowers are more valuable than fruits and vegetablesC . people have known how to control when flowers come outD . if the weather is cold and days are short, plants will flower(8)Scientists believe that _.A . other plants also know when to flowersB . flowers are more valuable than fruits and vegetablesC . people have known how to control when flowers come outD . if the weather is cold and days are short, plants will flower23. (8分)阅读理解Do you know some great inventors and their inventions? What factors (因素) are needed for their success?Well, good timing for a start. You can have a great idea which the public simply doesnt want yet. The Italian Giovanni Caselli invented the first fax(传真)machine in the 1860s. Although the quality is excellent, his invention quickly died a commercial(商业的) death. It was not until the 1980s that the fax became very common in every office too late for Giovanni Caselli.Money also helps. The Frenchman Denis Papin (1647-1712) had the idea for a steam engine (蒸汽机)almost a hundred years before the better-remembered Scotsman James Watt was even born but he never had enough money to build one.You also need to be patient (it took scientists nearly eighty years to develop a light bulb which actually worked) but not too patient. In the 1870s, Elisha Gray, a professional inventor from Chicago, developed plans for a telephone. Gray saw it as no more than “a beautiful toy”. However, when he finally sent details of his invention to the Patent Office(专利局) in February,1876, it was too late. Almost the same invention had arrived two hours earlier and the young man who sent it , Alexander Graham Bell, will always be remembered as the inventor of the telephone.Of course what you really need is a great ideabut if you havent got one, a walk in the country and a careful look at nature can help. The Swiss scientist, George de Mestral, had the idea for Velcro(魔术贴) when he found his clothes covered in sticky seed pods after a walk in the country. During a similar walk in the French countryside some 250 years earlier, Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur had the idea that paper could be made from wood when he found an abandoned wasps nest(蜂巢).You also need good commercial sense. Willy Higinbotham was a scientist doing nuclear (核能的)research in the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, USA. In 1958 the public were invited to an exhibition in the Laboratory to see their work, but both parents and children were more interested in a tiny 120cm screen with a white dot which could be hit back and forth over a “net” using a button and a knob. Soon hundreds of people were ignoring the other exhibits to play the first ever computer gamemade from a simple laboratory instrument called an “oscilloscope”. Higinbotham, however, never made money from his invention: he thought people were only interested in the game because the other exhibits were so boring!(1)How many factors do inventors need? A . 3.B . 4.C . 5.D . 6.(2)The word “ignoring” in last paragraph probably mean? A . having no idea ofB . making no sense toC . getting no chance ofD . paying no attention to(3)What can you learn from the passage? A . How to be a successful inventor.B . How to get a great idea from nature.C . How to have good commercial sense.D . How to make money from inventions.24. (6分) Have you ever heard an echo of your voice? An echo is a reflected(反射)sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall with nothing on the walls. Then shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called “echoes”.We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. It does not travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard(纸板筒).Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the roll to your ear.A megaphone(喇叭筒)works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a beam which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for example. Among the animals, bats and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near them.(1)Which is the right order of hearing our echo in a very large, empty hall?a. We hear the reflected sound b. The sound returns to usc. The sound hits the walls d. We make a soundA . c, b, a, dB . c, a, b, dC . d, c, b, aD . d, b, c, a(2)From the text we learn that _ .A . reflected sound is useful only to blind peopleB . people havent made use of reflected sound yetC . bats use reflected sound to fly and get foodD . whales dont use reflected sound as they live in the sea(3)If you havent got a megaphone, _ will help you to make your voice travel farther.A . a long piece of woodB . a roll of cardboardC . a thin threadD . a long piece of silk25.
