He built up over 80 companies in 20 different countries. He was always searching for a meaning to life. He spent much time and money working on how to end the wars, and keep the peace between nations, until his death in Italy in 1896. Stand in a very large, empty hall with nothing on the walls. Then shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called “echoes”.We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. It does not travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard(纸板筒).Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the roll to your ear.A megaphone(喇叭筒)works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a beam which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for example. Among the animals, bats and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near them.(1)Which is the right order of hearing our echo in a very large, empty hall?a. Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction (交流), said the studys lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didnt have much of an effect-positively or negatively-as long as it wasnt displacing conversations between an adult and a child. The UCLA study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes(收入) and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and took part in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.Factors(因素) positively associated with language development included each additional额外的) 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were put together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children. The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is, Zimmerman said. Although its mostly done unconsciously(无意识地), parents will provide more information and correct mistakes. Theyll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what theyre doing, such as, I m putting on your pajamas now. But youre your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment, she added. If parents can spare some conversation time-maybe at bath time or at dinner time-thats a wonderful thing.(1)The researchers also found that TV viewing _. A . could have a positive effete on a childs language developmentB . had a little effect on a childs language developmentC . affected a childs language development more negatively than positivelyD . affected a childs language development both negatively and positively(2)Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that _. A . parents should let their children talk most of the time.B . children should watch TV programs alone all the time.C . the conversation between parents and children should be two-wayD . its no good for parents to correct their childrens mistakes when they are speaking(3)We can get from the last paragraph that _. A . parents should let a child repeat what he or she saysB . bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a childC . parent-child conversation can be carried out at any proper timeD . parents should leave a child talking alone(4)What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph? It means _. A . Parents will make clothes for children as tailors.B . Parents will choose the topics that children are interested in.C . Parents will help kids to correct their mistakes.D . Parents will keep quiet when they have nothing to talk.(5)What would be the best title for the passage? A . Talk with kids, not to themB . Let your children voice their own opinionsC . But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just dont like one of your classmates? If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance. Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We cannot change the way that other people do, so it is important to lean to live happily with them.Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other. Getting to know someone may help you understand why he does things differently. Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad. Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and open mind. You need to remember an old saying, “Treat others how you want to be treated.” If you tolerate something, it does not mean that you have to like it. 现在,没有人要求你改变自己。 Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change. It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyones life easier. 学会接受能力兴趣与自己不同的人。The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference._四、 根据下列句子及所给汉语注释, 写出空缺处各单词的正确形式 ( (共10题;共10分)7.
