The paper, published this March in Psychology and Aging, examined health and welfare surveys from roughly 40,000 Germans between ages 18 and 96. The surveys were conducted every year from 1993 to 2003. Survey respondents (受访者) were asked to estimate their present and future life satisfaction on a scale of 0 to 10, among other questions. The researchers found that young adults (age 18 to 39) routinely overestimated their future life satisfaction, while middle-aged adults (age 40 to 64) more accurately predicted how they would feel in the future. Adults of 65 and older, however, were far more likely to underestimate their future life satisfaction. Not only did they feel more satisfied than they thought they would, the older pessimists seemed to suffer a lower ratio (比率) of disability and death for the study period. We observed that being too optimistic in predicting a better future than actually observed was associated with a greater risk of disability and a greater risk of death within the following decade, wrote Frieder R. Lang, a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Lang and his colleagues believed that people who were pessimistic about their future may be more careful about their actions than people who expected a rosy future.Seeing a dark future may encourage positive evaluations of the actual self and may contribute to taking improved precautions (预防措施), the authors wrote. Surprisingly, compared with those in poor health or who had low incomes, respondents who enjoyed good health or income were associated with expecting a greater decline. Also, the researchers said that higher income was related to a greater risk of disability. The authors of the study noted that there were limitations to their conclusions. Illness, medical treatment and personal loss could also have driven health outcomes. However, the researchers said a pattern was clear. We found that from early to late adulthood, individuals adapt their expectations of future life satisfaction from optimistic, to accurate, to pessimistic, the authors concluded.56. According to the study, who made the most accurate prediction of their future life satisfaction? A. Optimistic adults. B. Middle-aged adults. C. Adults in poor health. D. Adults of lower income.57. Pessimism may be positive in some way because it causes people _. A. to fully enjoy their present life B. to estimate their contribution accurately C. to take measures against potential risks D. to value health more highly than wealth58. How do people of higher income see their future? A. They will earn less money. B. They will become pessimistic. C. They will suffer mental illness. D. They will have less time to enjoy life.59. What is the clear conclusion of the study? A. Pessimism guarantees chances of survival. B. Good financial condition leads to good health. C. Medical treatment determines health outcomes. D. Expectations of future life satisfaction decline with age.BTorontoA pleasant attitude can do wonders for patients recovery, according to researchers who reviewed 16 studies that looked at patients attitudes toward health. Youre nervous. Who are these people? How do you start a conversation? Fortunately, youve got a thing that sends out energy at tiny chips in everyones name tag(标签). The chips send back name, job, hobbies, and the time available for meeting-whatever. Making new friends becomes simple. This hasnt quite happened in real life. But the world is already experiencing a revolution using RFID technology. An RFID tag with a tiny chip can be fixed in a product, under your pets skin, even under your own skin. Passive RFID tags have no energy source-batteries because they do not need it. The energy comes from the reader, a scanning device, that sends out energy (for example, radio waves) that starts up the tag immediately. Such a tag carries information specific to that object, and the data can be updated. Already, RFID technology is used for recognizing each car or truck on the road and it might appear in your passport. Doctors can put a tiny chip under the skin that will help locate and obtain a patients medical records. At a nightclub in Paris or in New York the same chip gets you into the VIP (very important person) section and pays for the bill with the wave of an arm.Take a step back: 10 or 12 years ago, you would have heard about the coming age of computing. One example always seemed to surface: Your refrigerator would know when you needed to buy more milk. The concept was that computer chips could be put everywhere and send information in a smart network that would make ordinary life simpler.RFID tags are a small part of this phenomenon. “The world is going to be a loosely coupled set of individual small devices, connected wirelessly,” predicts Dr. J. Reich. Human right supporters are nervous about the possibilities of such technology. It goes too far tracking school kids through RFID tags, they say. We imagine a world in which a beer company could find out not only when you bought a beer but also when you drank it. And how many beers accompanied by how many biscuits. When Marconi invented radio, he thought it would be used for ship-to-shore communication. Not for pop music. Who knows how RFID and related technologies will be used in the future. Heres a wild guess: Not for buying milk.63. The article is intended to _. A. warn people of the possible risks in adopting RFID technologyB. explain the benefits brought about by RFID technologyC. convince people of the uses of RFID technologyD. predict the applications of RFID technology64. We know from the passage that with the help of RFID tags, people _.A. will have no trouble getting data about others B. will have more energy for conversationC. will have more time to make friends D. wont feel shy at parties any longer65. Why are some people worried about RFID technology?A. Children will be tracked by strangers.B. Market competition will become more fierce.C. Their private lives will be greatly affected. D. Customers will be forced to buy more products.66. The last paragraph implies that RFID technology _.A. will not be used for such matters as buying milk B. will be widely used, including for buying milkC. will be limited to communication uses D. will probably be used for pop musicDBarditch High School decided to have an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hands to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park. Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(嘟囔声)when Ms. Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from an old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined. Then Ms. Yates started to speak:“I cant tell you how pleased I am to be here. I havent seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I havent appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth of your children, in my imagination.”Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued:“It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in your chosen path.”“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from t
