阅读理解A(2013青岛模拟)The Golden Gate Bridge is celebrating its 75th anniversary. The bridge opened to vehicle traffic on May 28th, 1937. Since then, more than two billion vehicles have crossed the world famous structure between San Francisco and Marin County, California. As many as 112,000 cars make the trip each day.The Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension span in the world, at the time it was built. The suspended roadway stretches 1,280 meters between the bridges two tall towers. The Golden Gate Bridge is named after the Golden Gate Strait. That narrow passage of water connects the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean. Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge project. Work began in 1933.The bridge is 2,737 meters long from one end to the other. It is 27 meters wide. Two large cables pass over the top of the bridges towers. These structures stand 227 meters above water and 152 meters above the road. Each cable holds more than 27,500 strands of wire.250 pairs of vertical suspender ropes connect the support cables to the suspension bridge. This is part of what enables the bridge to move up and down by nearly five meters. The Golden Gate Bridge weighed 811,500,000 kilograms when it was completed in 1937. The San Francisco Chronicle newspaper called the finished project, “a 35 million dollar steel harp”Architect Irving Morrow gets credit for the bridges bright orange color. The Navy wanted the bridge painted in yellow and black. The Air Force had suggested red and white.Mary Currie works for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. She says, “The bridge gets award after award for what it means in civil engineering and structural engineering. We are fortunate that Irving Morrow knew that the color would blend with the environment, that it would contrast with the ocean and the air above, and that it would also allow the art deco styling to really stand out.”【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。 1What is NOT mentioned of the Golden Gate Bridge in the passage?AIts location.BIts outline.CIts history. But some athletes hardly disguise their disappointment when silver and not gold is hung around their necks. The British judo silver medallist Neil Adams calls his two from the 1980s “losers medals”Until four years ago, they were in a box at the back of a cupboard. His wife then had them framed for his 50th birthday and they are now up on the wall.Adams feels proud when he looks at them, but his thoughts quickly turn to “what ifs”. “I wouldnt change much”, he adds. And he wouldnt need to. Gold was within his grasp twice, but slipped away by a narrow margin on the judo mat.“The losses at the Olympic Games were the most difficult thing for me to accept,” he said. “I didnt win the silver medal. I lost the gold. In my mind they were losses. It has taken more than 30 years to get over it.”Mark Cavendish, Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah have never won Olympic gold, but they came into London 2012 as three of Team GBs biggest medal hopes. Unfortunately, Cavendish has already suffered disappointment in the cycling road race. Neil Adams was in that same position in both the 1980 and 1984 games. However, in a career in which he collected every other judo accolade, things simply went wrong at the Olympics. In Moscow 1980, Adams was just 21 years old and found the media focus and pressure of expectation too much.Asked about being a favourite, Adams said: “It is hell, and about how you cope with it in the mind. It can make you afraid to win or lose and there is a difference. I was afraid to lose. Sometimes you freeze. Sometimes it takes you over.”Adams says that he was very cautious and that when something was tactical and technical he approached it too tactically. Perhaps its better to go in with a nothing to lose attitude. That might be the reason why the Olympic Games have often created surprise results. Sometimes its the ones who keep their cool and work the hardest who get the results.【语篇解读】参加奥运会的运动员都希望获得金牌,而那些与金牌失之交臂获得银牌的运动员的心里是什么滋味儿呢?6The best title for the passage should be .ALosers Medals BOlympic MedalsCTwo Silver Medals DFramed Medals【解析】主旨大意题。 A7Where are Neil Adams silver medals now?AAround his neck.BAt the back of a cupboard.CIn a box.DOn the wall.【解析】细节理解题。 D8How long did Adams keep the medals in the box?AMore than 30 years.BMore than 40 years.CMore than 20 years.DNo more than 20 years.【解析】细节理解题。 C9Adams always felt it a pity to win silver medals because .Ahe was narrowly beaten by the championBhe didnt try his bestChe lacked techniquesDhe was too greedy【解析】细节理解题。 A10What advice does the author give to other athletes?ATry to become the media focus.BKeep their cool and work hard.CTry to do better next time.DUse as many techniques as possible.【解析】细节理解题。 完形填空(2013郑州检测)An acrobatic(杂技的) master performed a tightrope(钢丝) walk between two mountains, which attracted thousands of people. When the 1 started, he went to one end of the tightrope, 2 straight at the goal ahead, with open arms, walking slowly step by step to the opposite side of the mountain.
