They shouted at the ruins again and again, knocked the bricks using various tools, but no reply inside. Then the rescuing team went to the next building. Suddenly the leader ran back, calling“Come here.” He came to the body, put his hands under the woman, feeling and touching, then shouted loudly and gladly, “There is someone, a baby, still living.”Through some efforts, rescuers cleaned up the ruins which blocked her. Under her body lay her baby, who was covered by a small red quilt (棉被). He was about 3 or 4 months old. Since well protected by his mothers body, he was safe. He was in a deep sleep when the rescuer carried him out, and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. The doctor, along with the rescuing team, took the baby out of the quilt to check if the baby was all right, and he found there was a mobile phone in the quilt. The doctor looked at the screen; a written message was already there: “My dear baby, if you could live, dont forget how much I love you.” As a doctor, he experienced much of this type of separation;but at this moment, he cried. At 10:46 am on that summers day, the quake hit with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale (里氏震级). The centre of the quake lied some 15 to 20 kilometers north of the two main centers, Napier and Hastings. The quake lasted for two and a half minutes. Many people died in the earthquake.A fire broke out immediately after the quake. The fire started in a chemists shop and spread quickly. Then the Fire Department in Napier came to help, but they were at a loss to control the fire as a result of losing their water supply. However, the water supply in Hastings, was still usable, allowing them to fight back against the fire. The force of the earthquake destroyed many of the citys famous landmarks (地标). Chunks of the coastline were thrown into the sea. Napiers Bluff Hill, a popular tourist spot, was completely destroyed and thrown into the waters below. Most of the major buildings in the city were completely destroyed. Roads and communications across the whole area were cut. People were afraid to enter their homes for days and found shelters at the local Motor Camp or on the beach. There were about 150 aftershocks (余震) in the 24 hours after the main shock. Over the next 2 weeks, there would be 525 such aftershocks.篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍的是新西兰的霍克斯湾在1931年所发生的一次严重的地震。1The worst earthquake took place in New Zealand _.Aat night Bin the morningCat noon Din the afternoon答案:B细节理解题。根据第一段中的“At 10:46 am on that summers day, the quake hit with a magnitude of 7.9”可知,在新西兰,那次最严重的地震是发生在上午。故选B。2The firefighters in Napier failed to put out the fire probably because _.Athere was no usable waterBthey couldnt get close to itCthe flames spread too quicklyDthe wind was very strong答案:A细节理解题。根据第二段第三句中的“they were at a loss to control the fire as a result of losing their water supply”可知,Napier的消防员们一开始无法将火扑灭是因为他们没有水。故选A。3The last two paragraphs mainly tell us that _.Athere were many places of interest in New ZealandBthe earthquake damaged the city seriouslyCmany famous landmarks were thrown into the seaDpeople were afraid to enter their homes for sleep答案:B段落大意题。根据最后两段内容可知,那次地震对那座城市造成了严重破坏。故选B。4Whats the best title for this passage?AThe 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquakeBNew Zealands two citiesCThe great fire after the great earthquakeDThe citys famous landmarks答案:A主旨大意题。根据文章内容可判断,本文主要介绍的是新西兰的霍克斯湾在1931年所发生的一次严重的地震。故选A。communication n. 交流;传达1break out 爆发;突然发生2at a loss 不知所措3as a result of 的结果BIf the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently.
