Presentation (Reading A) 1 On the Bb, write the following list of sentences on the Bb: * Xi Wang is the name of a baby giant panda. * Baby giant pandas are very small when they were born. * They grow very quickly. * Xi Wang has to find her own food when she is 20 months old. * Hunters kill giant pandas and sell their fur. 2 Divide the class into three groups and allocate one part to each group. While students skim the text on their own, ask them to underline the words they do not know. Then go through the words students have underlined. Ask students to explain briefly how they know that the sentences on the Bb are true by identifying and listing key facts in the text. Presentation (Reading B& C) 1 Ask Ss to draw a parallel between the growth of the baby giant panda and a human baby. Ask if they know what happens to people while they grow up. Write the following words/phrases on the Bb. Adult old person teenager baby middle-aged person Young adult child toddler Draw a timeline and encourage Ss to come forward and write each word at the correct point on the timeline. Ask them to draw a more creative growth chart. 2 Ask students to do a birth chart of themselves. Tell them to add their photos to the chart. Presentation (Reading D) 1 Revise the words listed in the box in Part D. 2 Ask students to complete Part D. Then ask some Ss to read the sentences aloud to check their choice of words. 3 If they show interest, ask them to practice the text for a presentation for 2-3 minutes. Presentation (Reading E) 1 Ask Ss to read the conversation in Part E in pairs to check if there are any words they do not know. Then ask Ss to complete the sentences individually. 2 Ask six Ss to read the conversation while the rest of the class check their answers. Step 2 Language points 1. Giant panda 大熊猫Giant作形容词,意为巨大的,如 a giant cabbage一颗巨大的卷心菜a giant player一个巨人般的队员 Giant也可以作名词,意为巨人,伟人或天才 YaoMing is called a giant.姚明被称为巨人。Who is the giant alive? 当今的伟人是谁?2 She printed it out so that she could read it later.她把它打印出来为的是以后随时能读。句中so that引导一个目的状语从句,从句中常用情态动词 may, might, can, could和 would。如, She got up early so that he could catch the early bus. 她起的很早为的是能赶上早班车。We have to finish it as soon as possible so that we can start another. 我们得尽快完成这件事,以便能开始另一件He turned down the radio so that his neighbours would not hear it.他把收音机的音量开小了一些,以免邻居们听到。so that 从句中无情态动词通常为结果状语从句,这时so that能与 so- that替换。如; he ran fast so that he caught the bus.=他跑的非常快,结果赶上了汽车。3 At four months old, she weighed about ten kilograms and she started to go outside her home for the first time.在四个月大时,它称重大约是十公斤并且开始首次离家到外面去。 For the first time意为第一次。Time作次数解时作状语且前面又有序数词时与for连用,但作表语时不用 for;当 times 前有基数词时不与for连用,如; He left home for France in 1990 for the first time.1990年他第一次离家去法国。 It is the second time that I have been here.这是我第二次来这儿。4 She grew into a healthy young giant panda and weighed 35 kilograms. 她长成了一只健康年轻的大熊猫,重35公斤。 grow into意为“长成-”“发展成-”,其中 grow作行为动词;如 the village ha grown into a big town. 这村子已发展成一个大镇。The boy has grown into a handsome young man。小男孩已成长为一个英俊的小伙子。 Grow作连系动词,意为变得,后可接形容词,过去分词,介词短语或动词不定式。如, It worries her a bit that her hair is growing grey.她头发开始灰白,这使她有点担心。 It is growing dark and they are hurrying home.夜幕徐徐降临,他们匆匆回家。 In this way they grow fron weak to strong.就这样他们由弱变强。5 At the very beginning, XiWang drank her mothers milk for up to 14 hours a day. 在开始时,希望每天要吃母乳达14个小时。句中的Up to意为“高达,达到,一直到”。如, the water in the river was only up to Johns knees. 河水深度只到约翰的膝部。The team didnt play up to its best today. 球队今天没有发挥到最佳状态。Up to now I always thought John was honest.直到现在我一直认为约翰是诚实的6 Sadly, it is very difficult for giant pandas to survive in the wild, usually because of people. 不幸的是大熊猫在野外生存很难,通常因为人。句型It is difficult for sb.to do sth. 意为某人难以干某事,其中it作形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式的复合结构,Sb作 to 的逻辑主语,difficult作表语。 如, It is not difficult for me to find his house. 找他的家对我来说不困难。It is impossible for her to get the job.她不可能得到那份工作。its an honor for me to attend your party.能参加你的宴会对我来说是件荣幸的事。7 survive一词的用法。 Survive可作及物和不及物动词。意为“比活得久,由-中生还,经历灾难之后还活着。” 如,Only two people survived the air crash.只有两人在飞机失事中幸免于难。few survived after the flood.洪水过后,生还着极少。she survives he husband.她比她丈夫活得长。8.Here are some of the problems that XiWang may have in the future if she lives in the wild. 如果它在野外生存,这些是希望将来也许会碰到的问题。这是一个到装句,主语是Some of the problems, are是连系动词, here是表语,副词here可位于句首引起全句,句子为完全到装句式。如,Here is a parcle for you.Here are some tickets for them. Look,here comes the bus. 在here引起的倒装结构中,主语必须是名词,当主语是人称代词时,必须把 be动词放在人称代词之后。如,Here you are. 给你。Here it is.给你/在这儿。9. If farms cut down trees and forests, giant pandas will have nowhere to live.如果农民砍伐树木和森林,大熊猫就无处生存。 have no where to live 中nowhere 是代词,作have的宾语,意为“无处,” to live是 nowhere的定语。如,If popualtion keeps on growing, we will have nowhere to lie down in the future.如果人口不断增长,将来我们连躺的地方都没有了。There is nowhere to sit on the crowded bus.汽车很挤,无处可坐。Nowher可作副词,意为“任何地方都没”。如, I went nowhere last Sunday. 上星期天,我什么地方都没去。 The watch is no where to be founded.到处都找不到那块表。10.Mothers often leave baby pandas for two whole days on their own. 母亲经常会让熊猫崽独自呆上两整天。On ones own 意为“独自,独立”,相当于alone, by oneself, without help。如, Im all on my own today. 今天我独自一人。 The boy can travel on his own. 男孩能独自开车了。(=alone=by himself)of ones own作后置定语,意为“某人自己的-。”如; His brother has a car of his own.=His brother has his own car。他哥哥有一辆自己的车。 They wanted to build a country of their own.= They wanted to build their own country. 他们想建立自己的国家。11.We can take the following actions to protect giant pandas.take actions to do sth. 意为“采取措施/行动干某事。”相当于 Take measures to do sth. 如, They should take actions to protect children.他们应该采取措施保护儿童。Its high time for us to take actions to protect nature.是我们该采取行动保护自然的时候了。Man should take actions to protect wild animals. 人类应采取行动保护野生动物。Protect为及物动词,意为“保护”,常与 fron 和against连用。如, The state should protect the children from any harm.政府应保护儿童免受任何伤害。 We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes from the sunlight.我们戴太阳眼镜免受阳光的照射。Farmers protect the young plants from the cold. 农民保护幼苗不受冻。Protect 与against连用时接较大的危害。如, we should protect our country against any attack.我们应该保护祖国免受攻击。12.encourage farmers to leave the giant panda reserves。鼓励农民离开大熊猫保护区。句中的encourage为及物动词,意为“鼓励,激励,支持,援助”。后接动词不定式作宾语不足语.如, My father encourages me to work harder.我父亲鼓励我努力工作。 The parents should encourage their childre
