Fortunately, there are some actions you can take to help master the first impression. Timing: Few things give a worse impression than showing up late for an important meeting. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to the interview in case you have trouble finding the office. Ideally, you should check in five to ten minutes early and always be polite and professional to everyone you meet you never know how much influence the man may have on the hiring decision. Appearance: Like it or not, people make judgments on appearances, so its important to look like a good professional. Never wear anything sloppy or tight. High-quality business suits are always appropriate for both men and women. And always be sure that your hair is clean. Handshake: According to some experts, your grip (握法) expresses different meanings. Offer a weak handshake and your partner will think youre hesitant or cowardly. Give a firm handshake and you can appear overly enthusiastic. But when you shake with a medium-firm grip, you express confidence. Body language: The best way to make others comfortable when you first meet them is by giving them a true smile. A study found that 55 percent of communication is received from the body language. To ensure your body language shows your confidence, sit up straight with your shoulders back. Avoid crossing your legs, and dont adopt a casual pose even if your interviewer does. If staring straight into the interviewers eyes makes you uncomfortable, look at his or her nose instead it looks like youre still making eye contact, but might be less nervous.54. To make a good first impression, youd better _ .A. give a medium-firm grip to express confidence B. not give a handshake to show your carefulnessC. give a weak handshake to show your good temper D. give a strong handshake to show your strength56. Which of the following would be the best title of the text?A. What Is the First Impression?B. A Good First Impression Makes You Stand out C. A Glance at First ImpressionsD. How to Make a Good First ImpressionBHouses fall down. Trees fall over. Large holes form in the ground. Could Alaska be sinking? Thats what some villagers in Alaska have been asking themselves recently and scientists think they know why. Warmer temperatures may be causing Alaskas frozen ground to thaw. About 85 percent of Alaskas land surface has permafrost. Permafrost supports the ground above it including trees, houses, and roads. But why is the permafrost thawing? Some scientists say that human-caused pollution is leading to global warming. And most scientists agree that Alaska has been getting warmer. They say that the warmer temperature is causing permafrost to thaw in some areas. The thawing permafrost can cause problems for people, plants, and animals. “The collapsing is a problem in the villages in Alaska which are built on permafrost, and some of them may have to move to safer ground, where there is no permafrost.” Weller said. The Alaskan town of Glennallen saw its old post office collapse. And, according to James Walters, a permafrost expert at the University of Northern Iowa, house-moving companies have been very busy. “Melting permafrost can also destroy trees and forests,” Weller said, “When holes in the ground form, trees fall into them and die. This could turn a forest into a swamp (沼泽), and animals which need the forest will have to move elsewhere.”The melting could cause severe problems. Weller says, “This could take hundreds of years, but in the end Alaska will look quite different from what it looks like now.” 58. Which of the following can be used as the best title of the passage? A. Alaska A Frozen LandB. Is Alaska Sinking C. Pollution and Global WarmingD. Alaska is Polluted 59. What does the word “permafrost” refer to in this passage?A. Most of Alaskas land surface has permafrost.CThe survey conducted last week by China Youth Daily and Sina. com showed about 70 percent of 3,990 interviewees believe the well-off are immoral and not worthy of respect. Only 4 percent thought rich people are good. For the rich to become popular they need to do three things, the survey suggested. First, they need to have a sense of social responsibility. Second, they need to be self-disciplined. And third, they need to have a caring heart. The number of people who make at least $50,000 a year increases by 15 percent a year, and according to the China Economic Times, the country now has 1.5 million rich people. The China Youth Daily and S survey found interviewees questioned how the rich became rich in the first place. “Some rich people are thought to have accumulated their wealth through illegal means, such as bribery,” said a post-graduate student at the Communication University of China.Even so, the survey found wealthy people who obey the law, and have a sense of social responsibility and a caring heart, are respected. The poll showed about 60 percent thought these kinds of wealthy people were worthy of respect. The survey suggested many voters were much better disposed (倾向于) toward rich people from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Western economies rather than the mainland. Hong Kong property tycoon (巨头) Li Ka-shing was most highly regarded, followed by Bill Gates, mainland property tycoon Wang Shi and basketball player Yao Ming.A professor from Renmin University of China called on the heads of Chinese companies to think and invest in a long-term way. “Corporate social responsibility is not only about charity, it also connects the company with the government and the public.”62. It can be concluded from the survey that _.A. most wealthy Chinese do not have a good reputationB. there are more and more rich people in ChinaC. wealthy people do not agree with the view of interviewees D. most interviewees are immoral and not worthy of respect63. What the interviewees want to know most is _. A. why rich people are not worthy of respectB. how many rich people China has on the mainlandC. what rich people have done for societyD. how rich people on the mainland become wealthy64. With the example of Li Ka-shing, Bill Gates, Wang Shi and Yao Ming, the author shows_.A. rich people out of the mainland are often concerned about charityB. the richer the people are, the more respect theyll receiveC. the rich with social responsibility are still respected by people D. its impossible for one to be wealthy only by legal meansDImagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there. Sounds unusual, doesnt it? But its not that unrealistic, with the development of Chinas high-speed railway system. And thats not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe. China is negotiating to extend its own high-speed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore. China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore via Vietnam and Malaysia. Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe. If Chinas plan for the high-speed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days. The new system would still follow Chinas high-speed railway standard. And the trains would be able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes. Chinas bullet train(高速客车), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the worlds fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours. Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance of railway tracks. So, its important to pay attention to every detail. But the key issue is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic railway expansion. China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather
