据从全国建设工作会议上了解到，1998年我国城镇住宅竣工面积预计可达3.5亿平方米，比上年同期增长一成。据专家估算，1998年住宅业拉动国民经济增长1个百分点左右。 随着住房制度改革的不断深化和扩大内需各项政策的逐步到位，对城镇居民经济适用房的按揭和住房信贷的开展，我国住宅建设步伐大大加快。1998年国家下达三批经济适用住房建议计划，总规模达2.1亿平方米，计划投资达1703亿元，分别为前三年安居工程建筑面积、计划投资规模总和的2.9倍和2.7倍。 密度纤维板具有幅面大，厚度范围广（2.545mm），双面平整，适合于一切饰面加大，并具有质轻，强度高，加工性能好，其性能相似于木材，又优于木材，有“无缺陷木材”之称，受到广大用户的欢迎，市场容量极大，具有显著的企业效益。 由于科学技术的发展以及对密度纤维板加工技术手段的进一步完善，MDF的用途到极大的拓广，应用范围涉及到建筑、装饰、家具、家电、包装等各个行业。 我国的密度纤维板业生产起步较晚，79年开始筹划建设直至84年86年先后有福州人造板厂和黑龙江南岔水解厂引进2条MDF生产线，试车投产产量约5万立方米。 密度纤维板与其它人造板相比，具有材质均匀，较高的强度，静曲强度约为刨花板的2倍，抗冲击强度比刨花板大一倍。密度中等，与天然木材接近，重量轻，变形小，原材料消耗节约。表面光滑平整细腻，便于二次加工，适合一切装饰方法，可加工性能好，易于锯切、钻孔、开槽、开榫、砂光及雕刻。握钉力强，易于装配。对原料的选择小，工艺调整容易。
