正如她在就职演说(inaugural speech )上许下的诺言:“want MIT to be a dream of every child who wants to make the world a better place”,“I want MIT an even better MIT”。今天让我们重温下谦逊,温文尔雅的学者Susan四年前激动人心的就职演说。Background knowledge:Yale bulldog: The mascot of Yale University is Handsome Dan, the famous Yale bulldog, and the Yale fight song (written by Cole Porter while he was a student at Yale) contains the refrain, Bulldog, bulldog, bow wow wow. Part 1Thank you, all of you for such an incredibly warm warm welcome to this community. I am deeply honored to have been 1 _ as MITs 16th President. As a scientist, Ive always regarded MIT as a 2 _ projecting an incredibly bright light that has illuminated the path of 3 _ and innovation for the entire world. And I know that I am only one of countless people who have been 4 _ and on many occasions awed by MITs strengths along the entire continuous scholarship, from the most 5 _ basic research into the nature of our world, to the most advanced 6 _ and technological innovations. It is of course the 7 _ of every university to produce and disseminate knowledge and yet MIT has advanced both parts of this mission at an absolutely 8 _ rate. Discoveries and innovations have poured forth from the Institute in a staggering torrent from engineering and science to be sure, but just as 9 _ from economics, businesses, the arts, the social sciences and 10 _.As all of you might imagine, over the last several weeks I have become 11 _ attuned to any mention of MIT. And perhaps not surprisingly, hardly a day has gone by without some news of some MIT discovery, some 12 _, some new program coming to my attention. MITs 13 _ history of discovery and innovation alone might well have been enough to draw me here, but over these last few months, I have discovered another 14 _ important feature of this institutions character. Something that speaks to the values and ideals that seem to be the very 15 _ of this place. From my very first conversations in the search process, I kept hearing about three of MITs central values: the pursuit of truth, 16 _ and the great meritocracy英才教育. I heard this from trustees理事, I heard it from faculty, I heard it from students and I heard it from staff members. And what I heard told me that here was a place whose values closely 17 _ my own, a place whose mission I could truly 18 _, and a place where Tom, Elizabeth and I could feel very much at home. Now I would guess that many of you are wondering how I imagine the future for MIT. First I have to 19 _ you Im not gonna be, bring a kennel of Yale bulldogs with us. You will all not be 20 _ to wear hats with whites on them. What I believe in is building strengths on strengths. Each of the MIT schools and activities must continue to be strong and 21 _, and we must continue to look for opportunities to amplify those strengths through collaboration, through shared 22 _ and through shared work. My overarching首要的 goal is to help MIT to be an even greater MIT, to become even better at education, research and 23 _.Part 2Part of this goal will be met by ensuring that anyone who has the 24 _ talents and ambition to make the most of what MIT has to offer, has a 25 _ chance to join this community. And I will do all I can to maintain MITs 26 _ in setting the agenda for national policy in research, education as well as to build 27 _ with academic centers in other nations. What do I want to see in MITs future? I can distill this into a very simple 28 _: I want MIT to be the dream of every child who wants to make the world a better place, but also, but also the dream of every 29 _, every scientist, every scholar, and every artist who draws 30 _ from the idea of working in a heartbeat of innovation in service to humanity. I have to thank the search 31 _ and its advisory groups of faculty and students for the gracious and 32 _ yet probing conversations weve had over the course of the search process. Im so looking forward to 33 _ those conversations and even more to beginning conversations with those of you I havent yet met. In particular, I want to thank Jim Champy, Jerry Friedman, and Dana Mead for their steady help and many 34 _ theyve shared with me about what Paul Gray has called this special place. I would be remiss怠慢的 indeed if I did not seize this 35 _, although I feel certain there will be many many others to salute Charles Vest for his extraordinary leadership. And that is leadership both at MIT and on the national 36 _, hes brought forward a great number of key 37 _ and has forged important new 38 _ over the 14 years he has served as MITs president. For his work for MIT and for the nation, I extend my personal thanks. At this point, Ive only just begun to learn about MIT. We are now in the season of going back to school and its time for me to do the same. All of you, all of you, 39 _, students, staff, alumni, you will be my teachers in the weeks and months ahead. I am 40 _ excited to be joining this learning community. And Im honored beyond words to join this institution as MITs president. Thank you all very very much! (The end.)Part 1Thank you, all of you for such an incredibly warm warm welcome to this community. I am deeply honored to have been 1 selected as MITs 16th President. As a scientist, Ive always regarded MIT as a 2 beacon projecting an incredibly bright light that has illuminated the path of 3 discovery and innovation for the entire world. And I know that I am only one of countless people who have been 4 inspired and on many occasions awed by MITs strengths along the entire continuous scholarship, from the most 5 fundamental basic research into the nature of our world, to the most advanced 6 applications and technological innovations. It is of course the 7 mission of every university to produce and disseminate knowledge and yet MIT has advanced both parts of this mission at an absolutely 8 astonishing rate. Discoveries and innovations have poured forth from the Institute in a staggering torrent from engineering and science to be sure, but just as 9 impressively from economics, businesses, the arts, the social sciences and 10 humanities. As all of you might imagine, over the last several weeks I have become 11 increasingly attuned to any mention of MIT. And perhaps not surprisingly, hardly a day has gone by without some news of some MIT discovery, some 12 invention, some new program coming to my attention. MITs 13 remarkable history of discovery and innovation alone might well have been enough to draw me here, but over these last few months, I have discovered another 14 critically important feature of this institutions character. Something that speaks to the values and ideas that seem to be the very 15 foundation of this place. From my very first conversations in the search process, I kept hearing about three of MITs central values: the pursuit of truth, 16 integrity and the great meritocracy英才教育. I heard this from trustees理事, I heard it from faculty, I heard it from students and I heard it from staff members. And what I heard told me that here was a place whose values closely 17 mirrored my own, a place whose mission I could truly 18 embrace, and a place where Tom, Elizabeth and I could feel very much at home. Now I would guess that many of you are wondering how I imagine the future for MIT. First I have to 19 reassure you Im not gonna be, bring a kennel of Yale bulldogs with us. You will all not be 20 required to wear hats with whites on them. What I believe in is building strengths on strengths. Each of the MIT schools and activities must continue to be strong and 21 distinctive, and we must continue to look for opportunities to amplify those strengths through collaboration, through shared 22 vision and through shared work. My overarching首要的 goal is to help MIT to be an even greater MIT, to become even better at education, research and 23 invention.Part 2Part of this goal will be met by ensuring that anyone who has the 24 extraordinary talents and ambition to make the most of what MIT has to offer, has a 25 fair chance to join this community. And I will do all I can to maintain MITs 26 leadership in setting the agenda for national policy in research, education as well as to build 27 bridges with academic centers in other nations. What do I want to see in MITs future? I can distill this into a very simple 28 picture: I want MIT to be the dream of every child who wants to make the world a better place, but also, but also the dream of every 29 engineer, every scientist, every scholar, and every artist who draws 30 inspiration from the idea of working in a heartbeat of innovation in service to humanity. I have to thank the search 31 committee and its advisory groups of faculty and students for the gracious and 32 intelligent yet probing conversations weve had over the course of the search process. Im so looking forward to 33 continuing those conversations and even more to beginning conversations with those of you I havent yet met. In particular, I want to thank Jim Champ
