The ban gives a harder time to schools trying to earn money, because of budget difficulties. Bake sales have proven to be highly profitable toward schools with young people because the start-up costs are very small. Allie, a Roslyn High School freshman, agrees that bake sales are needed for school supplies. “I think its wrong for schools to ban bake sales because a lot of schools need the money to be raised. Our school could really use the money for new uniforms.” Allie also commented on the bake sales apparent cause of child overweight. “I feel that it is the students choice to eat the baked goods. If they want it, let them have it.” Jessica, another Roslyn High School freshman, had a different opinion. “I feel that children can not always stay away from items such as cupcakes. It might be better if the amount of bake sales were limited, and only allowed students to buy one item.”New York Education advisors are having trouble coming up with substitute product for students to sell. A plan of advertising healthier foods has come into play. However, the department needs to consider if students will go for items like vegetables. Allie and Jessica dont think so. “Students might not like the healthier foods. This way, the schools are gaining less money.” Allie shares. Another plan to think about is the idea of not selling food products altogether. Alternate programs are being conducted throughout New York schools, such as walk-a-thons, as a healthy way for students to earn money for their schools. 56. A. sell baked food to students B. free students to choose food C. find ways to earn money C. offer chances to earn money B Greg Woodburn, a student at the University of Southern California, spends a lot of time cleaning sneakers once belonging to others. Soon the shoes will have new owners: under- privileged children in the United States and 20 other countries, thanks to Woodburns Share Our Soles (S.O.S.) charity(慈善).A high school track star in the beach town of Ventura, Woodburn was once sidelined for months with foot injuries. I started thinking about all the things I got from runningthe health benefits, the friendships, the confidence, he says. And I realized there are children who dont even have shoes.Woodburn gathered up his own slightly worn sneakers, then put out a call to teammates. His goal was to have 100 pairs by Christmas 2006. When the count climbed to more than 500 pairs (everything snowballed, he says), he decided to turn the shoe drive into a year-round effort.Back then, the sneakers came from donation boxes and the local sporting goods store and from door-to-door pickups. Woodburn has now set up collection boxes at two high schools and area races. To date, S.O.S. has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs. In just under three years, Woodburn has started three chapters of Share Our Soles: the original in Ventura, another at USC, and one at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts last January, when a student there wrote asking to get involved. The organizations website, , keeps and distributes sneakers and sells wrist bands and socks (the money earned from that go toward new shoes and socks for children).61. The text is mainly about _. A. Woodburn has changed his business. C. Few people supported his career. D. Few students are interested in his proposal. COne-room schools are part of the United States, and the mention of them makes people feel a vague longing for the way things were. One-room schools are an endangered species, however. For more than a hundred years one-room schools have been systematically shut down and their students sent away to centralized schools. As recently as 1930 there were 149,000 one-room schools in the United States. By 1970 there were 1,800. Today, of the nearly 800 remaining one-room schools, more than 350 are in Nebraska. The rest are scattered through a few other states that have on their road maps wide-spaces between towns. Now that there are hardly any left, educators are beginning to think that maybe there is something yet to be learned form one-room schools, something that served the pioneers that might serve as well today. Progressive educators have come up with progressive-sounding names like peer-group teaching and multi-age grouping for educational procedures that occur naturally in the one-room schools. In one-room schools the children teach each other because the teacher is busy part of the time teaching someone else. A fourth grader can work at a fifth-grade level in math and a third-grade level in English without the shame associated with being left back or the pressures of being skipped ahead. A youngster with a learning disability can find his or her own level without being separated from the other pupils. In larger urban schools today, this is called mainstreaming. A few hours in a small school that has only one classroom and it becomes clear why so many parents feel it one of the advantages of living in Nebraska that their children have to go to a one-room school.66. According to the text, many educators today feel that one-room schools_. A. need to be shut down B. are the best in Nebraska C. are still common in America D. provide good education67. One-room schools are in danger of disappearing because _. A. they all exist in only one state B. they skip too many children ahead C. there is a trend towards centralization D. there is no fourth-grade level in them.68. What is mentioned as a major characteristic of the one-room school ? A. Some children have to be left back. B. Teachers are always busy. C. Pupils have more subjects to study. D. Learning is at different grade levels at a time.69. Hats the authors attitude toward one-room schools?A. He praises them. B. He dislikes them.C. He shows sympathy. D. He rejects them.70. The last sentence suggests that parents living in Nebraska _. A. dont like centralized schoolsB. once studied in one-room schoolsC. prefer rural life to urban oneD. came from other states of AmericaDIn an effort to prevent parking-lot rainwater from polluting surrounding soil and underground water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)said on Thursday it has started decade-long test of porous(有空隙的,渗透的)materials to find one that can filter out(滤出)pollutants in rainwater before it flows to its final destination.Parking-lot pavement tends to collect chemicals leaked from parked cars. When a heavy rain or snowstorm passes over this area it tends to wash these wastes toward the nearest storm pipe but other times storm pipes are overflowed and runoff keeps flowing until it reaches the nearest land or body of water. At the test site of EPA, the agency has replaced a 3,995-square-meter section of parking lot with three different types of porous pavement. Researchers will over time evaluate the effectiveness of each pavement type in removing pollutants from stormwater, and how they help water filter back into the ground. This long-term porous pavement research is part of the agencys Green Instruction Research Program and expected to let the EPA document the performance and functions of three porous pavement systems at the same site, according to an EPA document describing the study. Each of the monitored porous pavement parking rows has sections lined with an impermeable (不透水的) material to collect the infiltrating(渗漏)water as well as sections that infiltrate into the underlying soil. Each impermeable section has a pipe that draws the accumulated runoff through pipes under the roadway to a collection tank to the side of the lot.Pollution runoff from hard surfaces remains a complex problem, an EPA spokesman says. In urban areas, polluted runoff often flows from pavement into storm pipes. When heavy rain events occur, polluted water is often let out into rivers, streams and oceans through events called combined sewer(下水道) overflows, he says. 71. What is the passage mainly about? A. EPAs new plan to prevent disordered car parking. B. An experiment dealing with polluted parking-lot rainwater. C. New materials to be used to make hard pavement. D. EPAs new rules to instruct parking lot and pavement.72. What is the agency trying to find out according to the text? A. What can be used to filter out pollutants in rainwater? B. Which type of pavement is effective. C. How the porous pavement helps rain infiltrate into soil. D. All the above aspects are included.73. In city areas, polluted pavement rainwater usually _. A. flows into storm pipes B. infiltrate into underground soil C. flows to water-cleaning factories D. is not allowed to run into sewers74. What does the underlined word “monitor” mean according to the context? A. explore B. observe C. head student of a class D. head of the agency75. “Combined sewer overflow” means _ in the text. A. river water flowing into cities B. too much rain water flowing into sewersC. ocean water getting polluted by rain D. too much rain water flowing into rivers第卷(共45分)第四部分 书面表达(共两节,满分45分) 第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。 A famous scientist who had made several important breakthroughs was being interviewed why he was able to be so much more creative than the average person.
