高中阅读完填训练(1)Nowadays, the modern British royal family has become a tool to increase global influence. On April 29, up to two billion people around the world watched the British royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was Britains biggest wedding since William and Harrys parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, were married in 1981. Williams grandmother is Queen Elizabeth. His father, Prince Charles, is first in line to become king. William, as the older son, is second in line. Since Kate is not in the royal blood line, for the first time a prince marries a real commoner. Kate Middleton is beautiful, attractive and not at all royal. Her parents founded a party supply company that has made them millionaires. In 2001, she was a student at the University of St. Andrews in the Fife, Scotland. It was here that she met her sweetheart Prince William of Wales. Prince William said that after meeting at St Andrews University, where they were both studying history of art: “We just spent more time together, we had a good giggle (咯咯笑) and realised we shared some interests. She has a normal sense of humour which is really good for me because Ive got a dead sense of humour, and things happened.”Few people would disagree that the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton has raised the spirits of Britain and many other places in the world that weekend. Whether you were in London to watch the Royal Wedding or not, you were able to catch the wedding news either live on a big screen near you, online or on your television or radio set. Its a fairy tale wedding and it surely deserves a fairy tale audience. Nearly two thousand guests filled the Westminster Abbey on Friday, including English football star David Beckham and his wife Victoria. Many Americans woke up before sunrise to watch the wedding. And thousands of people traveled to Britain to join the celebration. Anyway, the wedding gave a help to the faltering (低迷的) British economy and brought considerable revenue. The London event itself delivered a net profit of just under 100m, but the greater impact will be on the wider economy both that weekend and in the coming year. With a global TV and internet audience of 2 billion people, the advertising benefit to Britain as a tourism and cultural brand was immense. Prior to the event, Britain was ranked globally as fourth in terms of its tourism brand, and that is likely to have been boosted considerably by the wedding. If foreign tourism increased by 10% in the coming year as a result of that marketing, the direct income into the economy will be 1.6 billion, and because of the multiplier (倍增) effect that would result in another2 billion of economic activit3r.1. How we think about those hours will determine how good or bad we feel about our lives. How would you complete the sentence: “Work is . ”? How many of us say that work is fulfilling? How many say work is fun?If you think work is bad, youll end up working in an unfulfilling job regardless of how much it pays. If you think work is freedom, youll enjoy your work because it fulfills you. I call it “soul work”. If youre doing the work you love, it will be energizing, freeing.Much of our work ethic (职业德规范) starts in childhood by watching our parents. How did they talk about work? Did they hate it, or did they love it? The truth is probably somewhere in between. Many of us say we dont want a job “like my parent had” or a job where theyre stuck inside a cubicle (斗室). But many of us end up with jobs like that. Sometimes its how we approach the tasks of our jobs that make the difference. Its possible to make even the most mundane (平凡的) job meaningful and fulfilling. If it isnt possible for you to do that, then it is time to think about “evolving out of the job”. Sometimes just quitting a job because its boring is the wrong thing to do, and thinking about where you want to be and if you need more education is the good idea. Some young people seem to have trouble starting jobs or finishing college. Has our economy discouraged them? A recent movie I saw had a grown man (over thirty) telling his friends that hes a “stay-at-home-son”. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.I had breakfast at my local Perkins yesterday. Kristin took my order. She was happy and full of energy compared to the other waitresses. I watched as she remembered everything a family of four staying at a neighboring hotel had ordered the day before. Kristin loved people and people loved her job. She has the kind of attitude and work ethic that employers desire.Whats your work belief? Does it limit you? Could you tune it up to live a better life right now? If most of us are going to spend 30 years working, shouldnt we try to make it enjoyable? Could it be that work is freedom or right work is energizing or something even better?1. According to the author, what determines the nature of work?A. Appropriate pay.B. Your inner feeling.C. Your life goals.D. The environment around you.3. The underlined part “evolving out of the job” (Para. 5) probably means _.A. leaving someone else to deal with the jobB. giving up the job and finding a new oneC. pursuing something outside the job itselfD. doing something to improve yourself and better the job4. The authors attitude shown in the sixth paragraph is _.A. supportiveB. disappointedC. satisfiedD. indifferent5. The author thinks highly of Kristin becauseA. she treats every customer equallyB. she is good at memorizing thingsC. she is a close friend of the authorsD. she has a positive job attitude(5)On the night of my birthday, I went out to buy vitamins for my mother. 1 it was my birthday, I was feeling blue and a bit lonesome.
