A group that is disorganized or fighting frequently among members will not be a good learning group. The leadership pattern includes _27_(help) to form and maintain a positive learning environment so that all activities can take place smoothly. On the first day of class, perhaps a few closely united groups and friendships already exist. But there is no sense of group unity. If teachers are successful leaders, they will help students develop a system of relationships _28_ encourages cooperation.Standards and rules must be established to maintain order, ensure justice, and protect individual rights, _29_do not go against school policy._30_ skilful the teacher is in uniting students and establishing a good atmosphere, the task is never complete. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual _41_, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain _42_ in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language. There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as _43_ positions can be symbolized by feathers _44_on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being _45_ can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.However _46_ these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we _47_ special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are _48_ by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why cant they call things by their right names? This feeling_49_ itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is _50_ to have said: “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel that the symbol is inherently connected in some way with the things symbolized.III. BIf a diver surfaces too quickly, he may suffer the bends. Nitrogen(氮) dissolved(溶解) in his blood is suddenly liberated by the reduction of pressure. The consequence, if the bubbles (气泡)accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent bodythus the name. If the bubbles form in his lungs or his brain, the consequence can be death. Other air-breathing animals also suffer this decompression(减压) sickness if they surface too fast: whales, for example. And so, long ago, did ichthyosaurs. That these ancient sea animals got the bends can be seen from their bones. If bubbles of nitrogen form inside the bone they can cut off its blood supply. This kills the cells in the bone, and consequently weakens it, sometimes to the point of collapse. Fossil (化石)bones that have caved in on themselves are thus a sign that the animal once had the bends. Bruce Rothschild of the University of Kansas knew all this when he began a study of ichthyosaur bones to find out how widespread the problem was in the past. What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of decompression over the 150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the worlds natural-history museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic period and from the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils, reflecting their gradual evolution of measures to deal with decompression. Instead, he was astonished to discover the opposite. More than 15% of Jurassic and Cretaceous ichthyosaurs had suffered the bends before they died, but not a single Triassic specimen(标本) showed evidence of that sort of injury. If ichthyosaurs did evolve an anti-decompression means, they clearly did so quicklyand, most strangely, they lost it afterwards. But that is not what Dr Rothschild thinks happened. He suspects it was evolution in other animals that caused the change. Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape a predator (捕食动物) such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches. Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully shark- and crocodile-free. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey(猎物) as well as predatorand often had to make a speedy exit as a result.70. Which of the following is a typical symptom of the bends?A. A twisted body.B. A gradual decrease in blood supply.C. A sudden release of nitrogen in blood.D. A drop in blood pressure.71. The purpose of Rothschilds study is to see_ .A. how often ichthyosaurs caught the bendsB. how ichthyosaurs adapted to decompressionC. why ichthyosaurs bent their bodiesD. when ichthyosaurs broke their bones72. Rothschilds finding stated in Paragraph4_ .A. confirmed his assumption B. speeded up his research processC. disagreed with his assumption D. changed his research objectives73. Rothschild might have concluded that ichthyosaurs_.A. failed to evolve an anti decompression meansB. gradually developed measures against the bendsC. died out because of large sharks and crocodilesD. evolved an anti decompression means but soon lost itCMark Twain has been called the inventor of the American novel. And he surely deserves additional praise: the man who popularized the clever literary attack on racism.I say clever because anti-slavery fiction had been the important part of the literature in the years before the Civil War. H. B. Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin is only the most famous example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions, Twain plan
