Unit 9 Can you come to my party?Section A Reading成都七中 黄云娇 Analysis of the teaching material The topic of Unit 9 is about fun places, and this is the reading part in Section A. This magazine article gives a brief account of three museums that three students have ever been to: the American Computer Musem, the International Museum of Toilets and the Hangzhou National Tea Museum. Activity 3a lists two questions for students to answer. By looking for the answer to the first question, students are trained to skim and get the main idea of the passage. And the second question gives students an opportunity to express their own opinions about each museum. There are another three questions in Activity 3b, which require students to scan the passage in order to locate some specific information. Activity 3c is a vocabulary exercise with six expressions. Students are supposed to match them with the underlined words in the text. Through guessing from the context and using previous knowledge part of speech, students are expected to do the right matching work and get the general usage of these words.According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, after studying the teaching material, I think the teaching aims are the following:By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Understand the expressions: invent v., unbelievable adj., progress v.&n., rapid adj., unusual adj., toilet n., encourage v., social adj., peaceful adj., tea art, performance n., perfect adj., tea set, itself pron., collect v.2. Skim to get the main idea of the passage and scan to locate specific information.3. Learn to appreciate the social and educational value of museums.The teaching focus of this period is to help students understand the passage through skimming and scanning, and appreciate the importance of museums. But it is not easy to get every student to make it, so Ill help the students tackle the problem one by one. And by letting their imagination run wild, I can ensure that the students will come to realize the value and significance of museums, and hopefully, they will spend more time in different kinds of museums.After analyzing the teaching material and the students, and putting forward the teaching methods, Ill arrange my teaching procedures as follows:Step 1. Lead-inPlay a video clip from Night at the Museum and ask the students 5 questions. Have them talk about the museums they know and they have been to.(To arouse the students interest in museums and get to know about the worlds 4 great museums.)Step 2. Pre-readingTell the students we are going to visit 3 museums and ask them some questions about the 3 museums by looking at the illustrations in the coursebook.(To prepare the students for the following reading tasks.)Step 3. While-readingHelp the students finish 3 tasks one by one:1. Skim the pasage and find the main idea.2. Read carefully and finish the handout I have prepared.3. Finish Activity 3c.(To help the students fully understand the passage through using different reading strategies: skimming, scanning, guessing from the context, etc.)Step 4. Post-readingHave the students work in groups to discuss 2 questions and design their “dream museum”.(To help the students appreciate the social and educational value of museums.)Step 5.
