Building a bridge to succeed in English teaching and learning by way of English newspapers 姓名:吴伟 单位:当涂县石桥中学电子邮箱:714162574Abstract: Not only should teachers pay attention to the cultivation of listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also they ought to draw students attention to understanding what is contained in foreign countries culture and history, which is perfectly revealed in Module 8(High School English textbook). The content closely related to daily life can attract the interest of students and make teachers do more with less. It enriches English teaching contents, even puts up a bridge between real life and English learning, broadening students horizons. In this paper I will guide students to understand the real English world by multi-colored English newspapers.Key words: English newspapers, bridge, real life.报刊教学搭建学生通往成功的桥梁摘要:英语教学不光要注重听说读写能力的培养,更要去了解包含在其中的文化历史等知识,这一点在牛津译林版高中英语课本模块八的学习之中得到了充分地展现。与日常生活紧密相关的学习内容更能吸引学生的兴趣,教学时每每都能达到事半功倍的效果。它不仅丰富了英语教学内容,还能在学生的英语学习和真实生活之间架起一座桥梁,拓宽学生的眼界,在此笔者将通过充满生活气息的英语报刊来指导学生去了解真实的英语世界。关键词: 英语报刊 桥梁 真实生活As an English teacher,a good grasp ofthe textbookcan helpstudents to master the basic language skills,butmuch too boring text materials will weaken students interest in English and leave them with information that is too old or lacking in freshness. In Module8,the content ranges from English literature, music, painting to film, letting studentssee a more vivid English world. Although many students are lack of English language proficiency, the studentshave a preference for literary master Dickens, pop music in western countries, gifted painters Van Gogh, fantasy film Harry Potter, etc. Therefore, everyone will be involved in these topics and have an active attitude in learning. However, the textbook has its weakness: inadequate capacity, invariable materials, which will hinder the development of all-round language skills.Criterion of English Curricula for Senior Middle Schools issued by the Educational Ministry of the Peoples Republic of China in 2013 has put forward that high school English curricula needs diversification,providing a selfselection and selfdevelopment opportunity for each student in order to improve students ability of planning and autonomous development and establish a direction for their ownfuture development. Thus, in practical English teaching,teachers shouldactively usethe materials beneficial to students to develop their language skills and broaden their vision. As to students in rural areas, less access to varieties of latest news makes me think of newspapers as an important tool topromote English teaching and learning.Advantages of reading Englishnewspapers:Nowadays, eachschool is mainly making use of ChinaDaily(fora higher degree of English students),Teens(21stcentury)(suitable forsenior high school students in reading),EnglishWeekly,EnglishCoachingPaper,LearningEnglish (useful to test), some of which appear in the form of test papers while others based on the form of real Englishnewspapers. In the following part, Ill talk about the advantages of them.1. Low price,convenient to carryIn terms of price, newspapers are superior to hard covers and they are affordable to the rural studentswho can take them out at any time.2. Extensive themes,close to lifeLikeChinesenewspapers,English newspapersinclude updated information about politics, economy, culture, society and so on, in which the vocabulary is fresh, lively and vivid. For example:EightHonors& EightDisgraces(八荣八耻), Dama(中国大妈),securitiestrader(券商), gelivable(给力) .So,rich and colorful content makes students overcome the fear to English language, opening up a window for English learners to understand cultures of different countries.3. Large scales of vocabulary, easy to remember in real contextStudents feel distressed when finishing homework because of being short of vocabulary and are soaked in reciting word but in vain. As we all know,the meanings of wordscannot be recognized without considering the real context.The accumulation of words should be developed gradually through excerpt when reading. On the other hand, students can deepen the impression on words by reviewing repeatedly in their free time. If things go on like this,the promotion forreading comprehensionmust be tamped.Guidance for the students to readEnglishnewspapersWhile reading,the studentsshould practice their ability ofcomprehensive application of language according to their interests.The teachers are supposed toallow students to readin a limited time and requirestudents tocorrecttheir habit of reading:1. Practice reading abilities according to semantics,including phrases, collocations,but notword for word and sentence for sentence, such as:assoonas(一就),not.but(不是而是),asfarassomebodyis concerned(就某人的观点).2. Guide the students toread Englishnewspaper headlines.The titleoften reflects thetheme of an article and it is the extractedessence of what the authorwants to say.Therefore,the headlinehas played a relatively important role in understanding the content of the article. In this case, teachers have the dutyto introduce some common words used in headlines to students.As is commonly mentioned in current affairs, PrimeMinister(首相),Premier(总理),cabinet(内阁) are what we often see. Meanwhile, teachers need to remind students that present tense is usually used in titles,such as,Toughwomenriseabovecompetition(女汉子是怎样炼的).Prediction to the content by the title will lay a good foundationfor the next step ofreading.3. Master the main idea with thereading strategies (skimming,scanningand other reading skills). Faced with some new words, students will guess the meanings of them according to the context. But if we come across some names of people, places, organizations and diseases, we can ignore them because they dont stop students from understanding.4. Grasp theconnectionwords or keyword, such as:Addition:inaddition,furthermore,besides,moreover,whatsmore,similarly.Comparison:inthesameway,likewise,equally,in comparison.Causeandeffect: because,becauseof,dueto,owingto, thanksto,accordingly,asaresultof,hence,thus.Concession: although, though, nevertheless, provided, while.5. Pay attention to the teaching materials. Teachers can guide students to choose the articles that they have interest in with the method of overall reading, making students focus on how to get information and understand the gist of articles. In contrast, as to the articles that we have to read in detail, not only do the students know the structure of the discourse, but also observe the words, sentences, and learn to guess and infer the words meanings according to thecontextand the vocabulary knowledge.For example, it is said in the article (Research in China finds air pollution Researchsignificantlyshortenedlifeexpectancy) that “Researchers found significant differences in both particle pollution of the air and life expectancy in the two regions, and said the results could be used to extrapolate the effects of such pollution on life spans elsewhere in the world.” (研究人员发现,在南北两个地区,空气中颗粒物污染和人们的预期寿命都存在显著差异,而且研究结果可以用来推断在世界其他地方这种污染对寿命的影响。)In this sentence, “extrapolate” is a new word. Students can to guessitsmeaning as infer” according to thecontext. 6. From readingto writing, speaking and listening (1)Somearticles in Englishnewspapers have beenmade into the format of mp3. No matter whether they arebeautiful orclose to the life,they can easestudents sense of tension when doing the listening exercises instead of a feeling of resentment from the beginning.Even if studentscan not understand what they have heard,they can also see the contents in the newspaper,which will improve their listening abilities in return. The newspapersalso come with humorsor current news, which can be exchanged in the form ofspeeches between students.Thisisa good way to train studentslistening.Before listening,teachers can provide sometips to help students to betterunderstand the article.For example, give students explanations ofthewords given in the title of the article,let the students guessthe contents of the article,or directlytell them somehints of the article.(2)High school English teachersmustpay attention tothe students language practice. For example,teachers can specify thestudentsinterest inprose,stories from the papers to read. Then,take some time every week to have students reproduce what they have studied in the papers in the form oflectures,stories,jokes, debates, cosplays, etc.(3)Students compositions areoftena series ofEnglishwords in accordance with the randomChinese order so that authenticlanguage materials should
