Teaching ProcedureStep 1: Listening & SpeakingIf you describe an object (someone or something), you say what sort of thing it is (what kind of person he or she is), or what they are like, such as its size, color or shape. The simple rule is: Size + Color + Material, e.g. a large white paper bag/ short golden hair/ light blue eyes. 1. You may describe objects like this:A: Which apple do you like? B: The red one. A: What did your father look like? B: He was short and fat.A: How old is your English teacher? B: He is middle-aged, about forty. She has short golden hair and light blue eyes. My hometown is small and clean. The landscape was easy on the eyes. The day was hot and dusty.The house was old, damp and smelly.If you want to know something about someones work, you may ask:Where do you work?What do you do?/What do you do for a living?What is your line of business?What is your job/occupation?What does your fathers job involve? /Whats your father?What is your routine work?/What do you do exactly every day?Could you tell me something about your job?What made you decide to become a teacher?Common Answers:I work for Anderson office.Im a tour guide.Im a doctor.Im a secretary.He is the headmaster of our school. He is a gardener. I find a part-time job in a business company. Im looking for a better job.My job doesnt require special skills. To be a housewife is so boring. 2. The teacher then presents conversations on P32-35, and then asks students to make their own dialogues.Step 2: Words & Phrases Ask 2 students to read the new words, and then the teacher explains some of them.1. interview: job interview/interviewer/intervieweeinterview sb for sth: conduct an interview with sb (especially a job applicant)We interviewed 20 people for this job.Interview sb about sth: (a reporter) ask sb questions in an interviewinterview the president about foreign policies.Compare: appointment date and interview.You use appointment to mean that you have arranged to see someone at a particular time, usually in connection with his or her work, e.g. an appointment with ones doctor/client.A date is an appointment to meet someone or go out with a person with whom you are having or may soon have a romantic relationship, such as the blind date is an arrangement by a third person for a male and female to get to know each other, so as to have a romantic relationship.An interview is a formal meeting at which someone is asked questions in order to find out if the person is suitable for a job. Interview may also mean a conversation in which a journalist puts questions to someone such as a politician or famous person.2. application: formal requestapplicant: person who applies for a jobApply to: Safe driving rules apply to everyone.Apply for: she wants to apply for a position in this company.Apply oneself to sth/doing sth: concentrate ones thoughtYou will pass the exam if you really apply yourself to your study. 3. sign: sign language: language used by the deaf or the dumb people手势语sign for sth: sign a form to show that one has receive sthThe postman asked me to sign for the parcel.Sign up: employ by signing a contractHe has been signed up by a movie company.4. separately: separate: adj. v.separate sth from sth: These books should be separated from others.Separate sth up into sth: This land is separated up into small pieces.(This land is divided into small pieces.)separate the sheep from the goats: separate good people from bad peopleseparate the wheat from the chaff(谷壳,糠): valuable people or thing from worthless ones5. hesitantly: hesitation: without hesitation6. come across/over: (1)be understood What he said didnt come across.(2) make an impression: She came across well in the interview.Come across sb/sth: meet by chanceI came across an old friend on my way home.She came across some old photos in a magazine.7. fill out /fill in: write all the necessary information on an official docunment8. short for: be the short form of 9. be open to: be available to; have the chance to do10. let out: lte sb/sth out: Let the dog out.Let out a cry/ scream/ roar etc: make a sound esp a loud soundlet be :不要打扰let down : 令。失望let bygones be bygones :过去的就算了let sleeping dogs lie :别惹麻烦let the cat out of the bag:露馅Step 3: Leading in Pre-reading tasks:1.Which jobs listed below are thought of as more suitable for men and which, more suitable for women? Why? When it comes to the short form of a name, something interesting but embarrassing happens.Step 4: Text analysisThe teacher asks the students to get the main idea of each paragraph.What is in a name?Para. 1: introduction to the textseem: v. to look like Seem is usually followed by an adjective, a noun group, to-infinitives or a clause.It seemed very unusual.She seemed to be a very nice person.It seemed to me that she was far too romantic.(过于)Question: What did Chris come to this company for? A: for a job interview.Why was the receptionist surprised when she saw Chris? A: two reasons: First, the narrator was a man but his name sounded like that of a woman. Secondly, she might have realized that Mr. Lambert had made a mistake to ask the narrator to come for an interview for the position which was supposed to be filled by a woman. Para. 2: I came for an interview but others looked at me strangelytake a seat They took their seats at the small round table.take / have +n. refers to an action that someone performs.take a look at / take a break /take a bath / take a vacation /take a walk / take a short cut take action / take a trip (to) /take a chance /take a deep breathpoint: vi. show the position or direction to vt. aim or direct (at, towards) The hands of the clock pointed to half-past one.She was pointing her fingers at me.point out : 指出(常用于比喻意义)point to :指向(让人注意;说明很可能会有)point up :清楚说明point at sb.:指着某人as if: as though I remember the whole thing as if it happened yesterday.It looks as if it is going to rain.Question: Why did the three young women give him a strange look?A: They might also think it queer that a man should have come to apply for a womans job.Where did he get the news about the job?A: in a local newspaperPara. 3: my confusion and my qualifications for the jobget back When Tom gets back, please tell him that Jill phoned.He has got back the land his family lost.cant help doing : 忍不住She couldnt help crying.When I read this letter, I couldnt help thinking of my parents.even though /if :即使,尽管Even though I have opposed him, I respect him.They will stand by you even though you have failed.as if (as though) You can use as if or as though at the beginning of a clause to mean something that appears to be true although it is not.grammatical pointsas if or as though can introduce a subjunctive clause. 1) We use V+ed, or were instead of was to refer to a situation that is not true or does not exist at present.My mother looks after the orphan as if he were her own child.2) We use would+V to refer to a situation that is unlikely in the future.Mrs. Harper sobbed as if her heart would break.3) In as if clause, if the verb is look, seem, sound, taste, smell, we use declarative instead of subjunctive.It looks (or seems) as if (as though) a storm will soon come.Question: What job was Chris applying for?A: The narrator didnt mention exactly the nature of the work. But judging from the story, it seems to be a secretarial or office assistant job.What did the writer wonder while he was waiting?A: Others didnt realize he was a man. Chris short for Christine not Christopher.Describe the qualifications that Chris thought he had for the job.A: He had clerical work experience, knew something about computers and spoke Spanish fluently.Para.4: introduction to Mr. Lamberthave on: to wear When he left, he had on a dark shirt.He went to bed drunk, and when he woke up he found that he still had his shoes on.Questions: what was Mr. Lambert like?A: in his early thirties, had a sport jacket and jeans on, no tiePara.5 6 7: mistakeQuestion: Why did Mr. Lambert let out a surprised Oh?A:Mr. Lambert was surprised to find out that the fourth applicant was a man instead of a woman. He realised that he had made a mistake.Question: Why did Chris feel embarrassed?A: The narrator was embarrassed by Mr. Lamberts question which required a negative answer. But unfortunately, he was Chris Neale. Besides, his worries were confirmed when he realised that the position was meant to be only open to woman.Step 5: Summarize the whole passageThe teacher summarizes the whole passage. In peoples mind, some jobs are open only to women while some are open to men. I sent off an application for a job with abbreviated name Chris Neale. I successfully got a chance to have an interview, but everybody stared
