AThere is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it,or how much priority it must be given over in general language development and writing ability. The problem is,how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling? If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teachers interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language.Thats why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience:“This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible.” It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupils technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the childs deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the childs ideas,an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.21Teachers differ in their opinions about Athe difficulties in teaching spellingBthe necessity of teaching spellingCthe complexities of the basic writing skillsDthe role of spelling in general language development22The expression “play safe” probably means “ ”Ato write carefullyBto avoid using words one is not sure ofCto do as teachers sayDto use dictionaries frequently23Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that Ateachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakesBstudents will have more confidence in writingCstudents will be able to express their ideas more freelyDstudents will learn to be independent of teachers24The major point discussed in the passage is Athe relationship between spelling and content of a compositionBthe importance of developing writing skillsCthe correct way of marking compositionsDthe complexities of spellingBCheaters called “pirates” often use camcorders (便携式摄像机) and cell phones to make illegal copies of blockbusters in the local theater. These pirates then sell those recordings on the street or over the Internet for very low prices. Some share them for free.“Its unfair for people to pirate movies,” says 15yearold Hadaia Azad Ezzulddin.Movie piracy “takes money out of the pockets of thousands of people in the movie industry,” she notes.Victims include famous actors and directors as well as local theater owners and their employees.Hadaia came up with an idea that could help stop movie piracy.Hadaias idea uses infrared (红外线的) light. This range of light is invisible to the human eye.It is visible, however,to many types of cameras.Theater owners could place small infrared lights on their movie screens. The lights would not disturb people watching the movie. It would, however, distort the recordings made by many types of cameras. To test her idea,Hadaia built a box with a movie screen inside. Then, she projected images on that screen through a hole in the box.She took recordings of those images, using nine different types of cameras. These included the types found in cell phones as well as camcorders.During some tests, she also turned on light emitting diodes (发光二极管),or LEDs.The LEDs were embedded (植入的) in a certain place behind the movie screen. They gave out infrared light.Sure enough, she showed,a pirated movie included odd stripes or spots if it had been recorded while the LEDs were on.It might be possible to use the LEDs to flash the date and time on the movie screen. The information would then appear in the illegal recordings.Theater owners or police might use the information to track down the pirates.Cutting down on piracy might get more people into theaters to watch the real movie instead of an illegal copy.Six out of every ten films now produced arent profitable. They dont make enough money to recover how much was spent to make and market them.Such a poor payback can discourage filmmakers from producing anything but the types expected to become blockbuster hits.It might also keep smaller theaters from showing a wider variety of movie types.25From what Hadaia says in Paragraph 2,we can infer that Amost people spend less money on pirates movesBthe pirates dont have to pay for the movie ticketsCtheater owners will increase the price of movie ticketsDshe strongly criticizes those who video movies in the theater26Infrared lights are put on the movie screens to Aadjust the brightness of the movie screensBmake sure the images of movies are darkCmake illegal copies of movies unpleasant to seeDprotect the eyesight of viewers in the darkness27What is the correct order of the steps in Hadaias test?aShe projected pictures on the screen.bShe used cameras to record the pictures.cShe turned on the LEDs placed behind the screen.dShe made a special box with a movie screen inside.Ad,c,a,bBd,b,a,cCb,a,c,d Db,c,a,d28According to the last paragraph,we can know that Aforty percent of movies now are profitableBsmall theaters often choose to show lowcost moviesCmore and more people go to theaters to fight movie piracyDfilmmakers prefer to produce ordinary movies than blockbustersCThe person you are meeting for the first time does not know you and your appearance is usually the first clue he or she evaluates you.But it certainly does not mean you need to look like a model to create a strong and positive first impression. The key to a good impression is to present yourself appropriately. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and so the “picture” you first present says much about you to the person you are meeting. Is your appearance saying the right things to help create the right first impression?Start with the way you dress. What is the appropriate dress for the meeting or occasion? In a business setting, what is the appropriate business clothes? And ask yourself what the person youll be meeting is likely to wearif your contact is in advertising or the music industry,a pinstripe business suit may not strike the right note! For business and social meetings, appropriate dress also varies between countries and cultures,so its something that you should pay particular attention to when in an unfamiliar setting or country.Make sure you know the traditions and norms. And what about your personal grooming?Clean and tidy appearance is appropriate for most business and social occasions.A good haircut or shave.Clean and tidy clothes.Neat and tidy makeup.Make sure your grooming is appropriate and helps make you feel “the part”Appropriate dressing and grooming help make a good first impression and also help you feel “the part”,and so feel more calm and confident.Add all of this up and you are well on your way to creating a good first impression.29From the passage,we know the key to a good impression is Ato have tidy appearanceBto have a good lookCto present yourself properlyDto wear clean clothes30“The picture” in the fourth paragraph refers to Athe one you boughtByour appearance that you presentCthe picture you have painted recentlyDyour photo31It can be inferred from the passage that Aa pinstripe business suit is suitable for the music industryBappropriate dress is different in different countries and culturesCclean and tidy appearance is appropriate for all the business and social occasionsDcreating a good impression is to let yourself look like a modelDI resisted for years becoming anything like my dad or at least acknowledging that I was anything like him because, well, because I wanted to be me,not him; but there I sat at his memorial service several months ago, telling myself,“Youve got a lot more of your dad in you than you think.”Theres this phrase my dad used, and I know Im going to sound rude to complain about it,but it did use to bother me.“Im so proud of you,” he told us kids, whether wed won a sailing race or run a marathon or managed to get a book published.“Im so proud of you.” That should be a good thing, but heres what always went through my unforgiving mind:Youre taking credit for what isnt really yours but mine.“Im so proud of you.” It came out of my dads mouth all the time,on those longdistance calls where I might have mentioned something that happened at work or when he and Mom came to visit and we showed off the talents of our two boys.I knew the feeling of parental pride well, especially when my boys achieved in ways that were beyond my comprehension and ability, but I looked for other ways to express it.“Thats an incredible story youve written,” I would say about the composition.“I cant believe how fast you solved that problem,” I would admire the work of the math genius. But never just the blanket phrase. But there I was at Dads memorial, about to praise him, thinking that I could say exactly what my brother said,“He lets me be me.” That was his achievement. In the phrase that I promised I would never utter to my children was a world of forgiveness, care and appreciation. So just the other day when my older son,now a promising manager, sent me an email about the thankyou dinner his latest client threw him,I thought hard for clever things to say, finally realizing my kids just want what my dad gave me.“Im so proud of you,” I wrote.Just like the old man.32What do we know from Paragraph 1?AThe writer took on his fathers characteristics.BThe writers father loved him more than anyone.CThe writer missed his father in his deepest heart.DThe writer resisted accepting his fathers love for him.33What did the writer think when his father said “Im so proud of you” ?AHe should work harder.BHis achievement was wrongly claimed by his father.CHis father went too far to praise him.DHe didnt clearly know what his father meant.34How does the writer express his parental pride?ABy knowing well of his kids.BBy inspiring his kids writing.CBy admiring his kids work.DBy being specific about his praise for his kids.35Why did the writer write the five words to his son?AHe accepted his fathers way to show love.BHe wished his kids to achieve more.CHe couldnt find another way.DHe wanted to sound affectionate.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。The spirit of Thanksgiving is
