In 1984, at the age of 23, she married Bill. They were blessed with two children, a boy and a girl. By 1991 their love had deepened, and they were happy. Later that year, Bill developed a white spot on his tongue. He visited a doctor. One day shortly after that, Bill called Karen to sit beside him. He said with tears in his eyes that he loved her and wanted to live forever with her. The doctor suspected that he had been infected with HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. The family was tested, Bill and Karens results were positive. Bill had become infected before he met Karen; then he passed the virus on to Karen. The childrens results were negative. Within three years, Bill was dead. “I dont know how to express what it is like to watch the once handsome man you love and intend to live with forever dying slowly. I cried many nights. He died three months short of ten years of our marriage, ”says Karen. Though a doctor told Karen that she would soon follow her husband into death, she is still alive. The infection has progressed to the early stages of AIDS.Karen is but one of about 30 million people now living with HIV/AIDS, a figure larger than the combined populations of Australia, Ireland and Paraguay. According to one UN report, Africa has 21 million of these victims. By the turn of the century that number could reach 40 million and the disease will bring on the greatest disaster in human history. Of the worlds sexually active adults aged 15 to 49,1 in 100 has already been infected with HIV. Of these, only 1 in 10 realizes that he or she is infected. In some parts of Africa, 25 percent of the adults are infected. Since the beginning of the spread of AIDS in1981, about 11.7 million people have died of it. It is roughly calculated that in1997 alone, about 2.3 million people died of it. Nevertheless, there are fresh reasons for optimism in the battle against AIDS. During the past few years, there has been a drop in new AIDS cases in wealthy nations. In addition, promising drugs hold out hope of better health and longer life.21. By telling the story of Karen, the author intends to _.A. warn people against high risk behaviorsB. show the importance of medical testsC. show the consequences of AIDSD. show sympathy for AIDS victims22. The underlined part in Paragraph 1 most probably means “_”.A. gave birth to B. were asked to adoptC. regretted havingD. were lucky in having23. Bill was suspected of being infected with HIV after _.A. he got married to KarenB. he found something wrong with his tongueC. Karen persuaded him to see the doctorD. the family members were tested24. It can be concluded from the passage that_.A. promising drugs will soon stop AIDSB. the death rate of AIDS patients has been reducedC. it is hopeless to win the battle against AIDSD. the spread of AIDS could be controlledB Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship. Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in small talk, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any jobIn many European countries - like the UK or France - people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office. Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in ThailandI had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiledAfter getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary. Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly. People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.25. In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to _.A. share the same cultureB. develop closer relationsC. get to know each otherD. keep each other company26. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _.A. even talk and silence can be culturally differentB. too many words are of no useC. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by natureD. the English prefer to make long speeches27. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?A. By sharing different ways of life.B. By accepting different habits.C. By recognizing different values.D. By speaking each other s languages.28. What would be the best title for the text?A. Cross-Cultural DifferencesB. Multicultural Environment.C. How to Understand Each Other.D. In which part of a newspaper could we find the text?A. Education. B. Lifestyle. C. Hobbies. D. Careers. D Can you imagine that you can save your own life during a heart attack by coughing ? Lets see how A heart attack can happen to anyone. Lets say its 4:17 p.m. and youre driving home (alone of course)after an unusually hard day on the job. Not only was the workload (工作负担) extremely heavy, you also had a disagreement with your boss, and no matter how hard you tried, he just wouldnt see your side of the situation. Youre really upset and the more you think about it, the more nervous you become. All of a sudden you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to spread out into your arm and up into your jaw (下巴). You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home, unfortunately you dont know if youll be able to make it that far. What can you do? Youve been trained in CPR but the guy who taught the course didnt tell you how to perform it on yourself. Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seems in order. Without help the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint (晕眩的) has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very powerfully. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and last long, as when producing sputum (痰) from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without stopping until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help. Now, do you understand the whole matter? Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!32. According to the passage, CPR is most probably something done to _.A. train people how to stay calm when facing dangersB. help someone treat a heart attack by himself C. teach people how to stay in good state D. regain someones breath and heart beat33.
