Since 20 January 2011, it has been officially known as the EDF Energy London Eye following a three-year deal with the company. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, and the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom, visited by over 3.5 million people every year. The London Eye is located at the western end of Jubilee Gardens, on the South Bank of the River Thames In the London Borough of Lambeth in England, between Westminster Bridge( which has longer history than the famous Severn Bridge to the west of London) and Hungerford Bridge. When erected in 1999, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world, until surpassed first by the 160 m Star of Nanchang in 2006, and the 165m Singapore Flyer in 2008. A breathtaking feat of design and engineering, passengers in the London Eyes capsules can see up to 40 kilometers in all directions. The London Eye is the vision of David Marks and Julia Barfield, a husband and wife architect team. The wheel design was used as a metaphor for the end of the 20th century, and time turning into the new millennium(千禧年). Back in 2000, the London Eye was known as the Millennium wheel. In 2009, a 4D Film Experience was added as a free extra to enjoy before your ride on the Eye. Once you get high enough and start coming down the other side, you will see people reach for their cameras. Heres where the good stuff is right at your fingertips(or seems so). Parliament and Big Ben are beneath you, as are so many other historical things . If you are interested in other attractions inLondon, you can refer to the homepage. 1. You can find this passage_.A. in a magazineB. in a newspaperC. from a guidebookD. on a websiteBMany people in high school cannot wait to go to college and leave their hometown behind. Questions arise, though, when it comes to all of the decisions involved in choosing a college. One of the first considerations may be finance. State and public colleges are often the least expensive. Often, though, the better colleges are private and more expensive. It is sad when gifted students cannot attend a college of their choice just for financial reasons.Another major factor is location. Whether the college is in a small town or large city can have a major impact on its activities. A water lover probably will be more comfortable spending four years near an ocean or a lake. Those who cannot tolerate heat will probably be more comfortable at a northern college. Distance from home may also come into consideration. If family is a top priority, that person should stay close to home; on the other hand, if independence is desired, a campus farther from home would be more appropriate.School size also plays a major role in the decision process. If you want to get to know your teachers, a small college is suitable. For those of you who consider yourself a “ people person” and want a wide range of activities, a large college is more fitting. Your area of interest is another factor to consider in the decision-making process if you want to get the most from your education. The whole point of college is to learn what is of interest to you.Crucially(至关重要地), one must take into consideration the colleges by which you can realistically be accepted. An Ivy League school for an average student would probably not be a good match. Similarly, an average school for an above-average student would not work well. The college should provide enough of a challenge for the student to work hard. Although there may not be the perfect college out there, there probably will be one that is close. Those who cannot find a suitable college are probably not looking hard enough.5.When it comes to going to college the author thinks.A. financial situation is the first to considerB. students are unwilling to leave their homeC. students will become homesickD. students are eager to attend their ideal university 6.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?A. Students can be independent at college.B. A long distance will make students upset.C. The location of the college is a main factor.D The climate must be taken into consideration.7.What does the underlined part “ people person” in the passage mean?A. A person of great capacity. B. A very particular person.C. A very sociable person.D. A person of great importance. 8.Which is the most important factor when choosing a college? A. The location of a college.B. The examination result. C. School size.D. The coming challenges.C Why should I teach my children history? That sounds like a stupid question to even ask. But, as I hear different home schooling teachers discuss history, I get the idea that there may be different reasons for teaching history. Let me briefly explain the three good reasons for studying history and two bad reasons for studying history. The major reason I see for studying history is that we can learn from the past. I am convinced that the world would be a much better place if more people understood the successes and failures of the past and the things that made these successes and failures. However, as the unfortunately true statement goes the one thing we seem to learn from history is that we dont seem to learn from history. Perhaps at least in teaching history, to my children I can do a small part in changing this. The second major reason for studying history is that it is hard to understand the current political climate in the absence of an understanding of its historical context. We can not even understand why we are and where we are without history, much less (更不必说) try to figure out where we are going or how we should get where we want to be. I teach my children history, for one more reason. I purchased a set of historical audio (录音机) tapes for our children. My seven-year-old son listened to them over and over. It was my hope that he would become inspired by the accomplishments of people like the Wright brothers to accomplish things by himself. I think that it is good that we celebrate the accomplishments of people like Martin Luther King Jr. if, in doing so, young people are called on to stand for the principles that he stood for and accomplish what he accomplished. I also think that by studying people like Adolph Hitler, people can learn to stand against the things that he stood for.9. In Paragraph 3, the author shows that history is useful because _. A. it makes the current political situation go smoothly B. it helps us realize the importance of historical events C. it helps us understand why things are the way they are D. it helps people accept the present situation where they live10. Some historical figures(人物) are mentioned in the last paragraph to show _. A. people can be inspired to do good, while also learning to fight against evil B. people may also learn from bad historical figures C. more celebrations should be held to honor their achievements D. todays people can also achieve what they achieved11. What would be talked about in the following paragraph? A. How to teach history effectively. B. Some negative reasons for studying history. C. How to get more people to study history. D. Some bad historical figures.12. The main purpose of this passage is to _. A. inspire the parents to teach their children history B. show the importance of history in politics C. explain the reasons why children study history D. introduce the writer s own way of teaching historyD Amazon. com has received a patent(专利) right to send its products to customers by drone planes. The company is the largest US-based online seller of products by mail and other services. Now, the company has received a patent for its planned drone delivery system. In March, federal officials allowed Amazon to test its drone delivery plan. But even with a patent and the ability of drones to make deliveries, it does not appear the company will put its new delivery system in place any time soon. The US Patent Office published the document, which describes Amazons plans to use GPS to deliver products to homes and to wherever people are. The drone will use a customers mobile device - usually a smartphone -to avoid hitting people or buildings and to find a secure area to land. The company wants to deliver products within 30 minutes after people order them on its website. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is worried about the safety. Although it allowed Amazon to test the system, the agency said the operators must be able to see the planes. That greatly limits the delivery area. Loretta Alkalay is a professor at the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in New York. Although Amazon is not yet offering drone delivery, Professor Alkalay says it will not be long before it does. She says there are worries that the drones will hit buildings or people, or that the products and drones will be stolen or damaged by people on purpose. But she says that is because many people believe the drones would only deliver the products to the front door of a house. “However, it is possible that homes will one day have special area on their roofs designed to receive product deliveries,” she adds.13. What is special about the new delivery system? A. It can deliver heavy products by plane. B. It uses planes without human operators. C. It can delivery many products at a time. D. It is much safer than other delivery ways.14. The underlined word “secure” in Paragraph 3 means “_”. A. safe B. large C. special D. empty15. After reading the passage, we can infer that FAA_ A. doesnt really like Amazon B. totally support the drone delivery system C. doesnt think Amazon should get the patent D. doubts about the drone delivery system第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。注意:选择E涂AB;选择F涂CD;选择G涂ABCD The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. 16 .
