That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have helped to create a world in which taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently have enough good data been collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia, Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.Malta wins the race for most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are active enough according to Dr Hallals study, compared with fewer than four in ten British. These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved(进化) to benefit from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days has nearly the same effect on life span(寿命) as smoking.1. We may learn from Paragraph 1 that_.A. the decline of exercise rates is newly discovered B. the study suggests 31% of female adults get too little exercise C. the good enough data has been collected from only one countryD. the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degree2. According to the study, women of Luxembourg_. A. have little time to exercise B. hate to get regular exerciseC. take more exercise to lose weightD. exercise more than men in their country3. Benefits of Taking Exercise参考答案14、DDCA阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。Recreational tree climbing is taking root in the ecotourism industry, and its sending guys like Tim Kovar to far off reaches of the globe. Kovar, a tree-climbing instructor, recently returned to the U.S. from Brazil, where he spent time developing a tree-climbing operation thanks to the slow travel movement. Slow travel, is like the slow food movement, the practice of giving fast food in favor of homegrown cookingthe kind that takes hours to prepare and enjoy. Likewise, slow travel urges visitors to experience a places natural surroundings and learn about the ecology in a way not afforded by extreme games. Tree climbing is a slow activity, says Kovar. Its not something you do quickly and then youre on to the next thing or event. There is no such thing as a quick climb, especially for beginners. This wasnt a race against the clock or the fellow climbers. In fact, tree climbing is unlikely to ever become a feature of the extreme games. Many climbers refuse competition. There has already been so much competition in the world. When you stand below the tree, it can be amazing, Rusel DeMaria says, looking affectionately up at Michaels Triumph, a 150-foot-tall tree. But reaching the treetop, he adds, is an entirely different feeling. Likewise, his wife, Viola Brumbaugh, kneels on the ground and asks Michaels Triumph for permission to climb. It goes a lot smoother that way, She says. And climbing has been included into many educational programs. New Tribe offers guided climbs through its school, Tree Climbing Northwest, where we teach enough tree biology and forest ecology to raise awareness in our students, says New Tribe present Sophis Sparks. We know that the tree climbing experience deepens personal appreciation for trees. After climbing, people value trees more and are motivated to support preservation. This is not just to preserve their playground. Perhaps that is why he struggles with the term recreational tree climbing, saying, I prefer to call it inspirational tree climbing.16. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these cant be said to show the babys intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(模仿)leads on to deliberate(有意的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world .Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.1. Before children start speaking_.A. they need equal amount of listening B. they need different amounts of listeningC. they are all eager to cooperate with the adults by obeying spoken instructionsD. they cant understand and obey the adults oral instructions2. Children who start speaking late _.A. may have problems with their listeningB. probably do not hear enough language spoken around themC. usually pay close attention to what they hearD. often take a long time in learning to listen properly3. A babys first noises are _.A. an expression of his moods and feelings B. an early form of languageC. a sign that he means to tell you something D. an imitation of the speech of adults4. The problem of deciding at what point a babys imitations can be considered as speech_.A. is important because words have different meanings for different peopleB. is one that should be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with ageC. is not especially important because the changeover takes place gradually D. is one that should be completely ignored because childrens use of words is often meaningless 5. The author implies_.A. parents can never hope to teach their children new soundsB. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitating C. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speakD. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly(A)本文讲语言学习从听开始,听得越多,讲得越好。 由文章第二句中and later starters are often long listeners可知,开始讲话越晚,学听的时间就越长。A 细节题。由第六句可知,作者认为这些noises不属于语言,是孩子情感的表达形式。C 细节题。根据文章It is a problem we need to get out可知,作者认为难以界定,没有特殊界线,属于自然过渡,是渐变过程。B 推测判断题。由最后一句的前半句可以推断出,孩子始终喜欢模仿。【2015高考复习】阅读理解More than half of rich Americans have not shown their full wealth to their children,a new survey showed last Tuesday. The survey, published by the Bank of America, studied the rich with $3 million or more in assets. It found that “surprisingly few of those surveyed have welldeveloped plans to preserve and pass on their assets to their children”The majority of the 457 people surveyed are selfmade, firstgeneration rich.Fiftytwo percent of parents have chosen not to tell their children just how wealthy they are,and 15 percent have given away nothing about the family wealth. One in three parents said they had never thought to do it.They are worried that their children would become lazy, spend money freely, make bad decisions and even become a target for gold diggers.Only 34 percent strongly agreed that their children would be able to handle any inheritance (遗产) they plan to leave them.“There is an expectation about the wealthy parents that they have a responsibility to pass down their fortune to the next generation,” said Sallie Krawcheck, president of the Global Wealth and Investment Management of the Bank of America.“Our research, however, uncovered changing views of what one generation owes the next.”The trend is led by the worlds richest man Bill Gates, who promised in 2008 that he would leave his $58 billion fortune to the charity started by him and his wife, the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation (基金会),and not to his children.“We want
