Contentsvii This page intentionally left blank Foreword Octobers in the San Francisco Bay Area are always warm and in late October for at least a few days the winds usually reverse direction and blow westerly bringing even warmer air to the coastal areas from California s famous Central Valley There is even a name for these winds the Santa Anas People around here inexplicably call this earthquake weather but it really is fire weather The morning of 21 October 1991 I remember noticing the balmy breeze coming from the wrong direction as I left my home in the Oakland hills and drove to work Little did I know that the East Bay landscape along with thousands of people s lives was about to undergo a sudden and dramatic change I didn t know Terry Galloway at that time But within two days I knew the name of the street he lived on Charing Cross Most of the fatalities from what became known as the Oakland Firestorm occurred within one block of Terry s house on the 14 wide winding steep stretch of pavement that the City of Oakland had refused to widen and which had vexed Terry and his neighbors for years But that s another story It may be that if there had not been an Oakland Hills Firestorm Terry Galloway would never have walked into my office But I like to think that the life path we had each staked out for ourselves made our meeting inevitable Terry had dedicated his professional life years earlier to renewable energy research and development and had been a pioneer in promoting hydrogen fuel cells calling for the use of medical or feedlot waste rather than petroleum to create the hydrogen Terry had also extensively researched solar energy systems and was a strong advocate As for me since graduating in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1974 I had dedicated my life to promoting solar energy as the primary long term energy source for the planet So when Terry showed up at Sun Light both of whom cheerfully undertook this huge task of bringing the most advanced ideas tempered with 15 years of solar experience In this book you see the result of our efforts I also want to thank the many subcontractors that did the solar specific installations and made them work And in particular Yamas Control who upgraded my homebrew smart house controls to the modern world of the compact efficient and web based controls used in commercial buildings today Finally I thank Elsevier Architectural Press through Geoff Smaldon who invited the effort to Liz Whiting Alison Yates and Jackie Holding the dedicated typesetter team at Charon Tec and independent Caterpillar Tractor Company Daniel had an incredible drive from his teen years forth to take on tough challenges and seek engineering solutions to large societal problems He invented mechanical solutions built them and tested them with great satisfaction At 21 he was one of the pioneer leaders crossing the US via the Oregon Trail and coming up with inventive ideas along the way Once in Oregon he did blacksmith work built and ran a steam logging mill and began inventing grain cleaners and a variety of agricultural labor saving machines He teamed with another inventor to develop the steam traction engine to pull his newly invented combined harvesters In 1883 this combined product was commercially manufactured in his new plant The Best Manufacturing Co in San Leandro California Steam led to vapor electric engines which led to diesel and the big 8 foot traction engine drive wheels led to tracks and so together with his son Daniel evolved the early well known and respected gas traction engine crawler tractors the Best 30 and Best 60 models His inventiveness continued even at 83 he was testing new concepts in a steam turbine engine In 1925 his son s C L Best Gas Traction Company and the Holt Company of Stockton CA merged to form the Caterpillar Tractor Company we know today Daniel loved sketching out mechanical designs building them and getting patents issued some 38 in his name and a similar number in his son s He loved the challenges of trying new things to encourage new technologies leading the way to making a better world Well in late 2003 we demonstrated one of these huge 110 h p Best Traction Engines of the 1905 era pulling a Holt Combine at the Ardenwood Historical Farm Park in Fremont CA harvesting 2 5 tons of wheat culminating the result of 13 years of restoration work and thousands of hours of dozens of volunteers This is my connection with the past to better understand these inventive genes that drive my life today bringing new technology forth 1 6Examples of the design process 1 7Business philosophy 1 1USERS OF THIS GUIDE BOOK This book has been created as a Guide book to satisfy the demand of solar house designers It is aimed to provide a uni fied experience base of the various solar options which designers may consider appropriate as selections individually or in combination for their client owner and or architect in developing their own solar house The chapters have been organized into sections that cover these options and their many factors This will help the solar designer when formulating their plans with the client owner Some important design guidelines that stand out as being particularly critical for the solar house designer have been highlighted To motivate the solar designer through this process it is sug gested that the background of the broader areas of renewable energy and the important role that solar energy plays in this mix is examined Developing countries many of which lack exten sive infrastructure can leapfrog ahead by skipping the prob lematic fossil fuel era and move into the more exciting future of new energy technologies We also show the critical role these renewable energy options play in future global environmental health of our delicate planet and its balance of ecosystems The presentation begins with considerations of the construc tion site and how it can be used to maximize the functionality 1 of the solar house while using the direct rays of the sun to maximum advantage throughout the year These considera tions will vary tremendously depending on the part of the country in which the construction site is located Once these site opportunities have been carefully consid ered then there are a number of solar features that can be examined such as 2Solar House A Guide for the Solar Designer What is renewable energy solar passive heat in buildings solar photovoltaic PV power solar thermal power stations solar process heat solar chemistry wind energy biomass sustainably grown waste to energy hydro pumped storage geothermal energy ocean energy 1 passive solar heat gain and cooling siting and microclimates and computer modeling 2 space heating from coupled greenhouse heat 3 nocturnal cooling 4 use of thermal mass for tempering the temperature swings 5 forced convection for actively controlling different zones of living space 6 radiant floor heating 7 geothermal heat pump for cooling and heating 8 domestic hot water 9 swimming pool as solar assist for heat pumps 10 swimming pool operation for 7 months out of the year 11 PV collectors for grid tied electricity 12 computer control systems for optimizing space conditioning 13 annual energy usage 14 future 1 2SOLAR IS A CRITICAL PART OF THE GLOBAL RENEWABLES MIX Global renewable energy projections Worldwide there seems to be a consensus within the energy savvy scientific community that major countries should begin setting a path for renewable energy in order to provide 20 of their domestic energy by year 2020 This has far broader and bolder benefits than perhaps people realize First it can set their country onto a steady dependable course to energy independence while advancing the new economy of wind solar and waste conversion to energy and at the same time capitalizing on the recent advances in fuel cell technologies Second it can create distributed centers of energy generation with high quality dependable rate stable electricity that will attract new businesses who need very reliable power This vision would set the individual countries of the world on a course to energy independence By vectoring renewables on a slope upward as shown in Figure 1 1 it sends a signal that the collective dependence on foreign oil will start its inevitable slope downward Thus petroleum as the percent age of the global energy mix will decline Deffeyes 2001 This message will become clear to the world around 2010 It is expected that this can release countries from the OPEC oil car tel strangle hold currently monopolizing crude oil pricing By 2020 renewables are expected to reach 20 of America s as well as the world s energy mix in fact California has legisla tively formalized this goal and in 2002 was already at 16 5 with wind power being the largest The developing countries have also agreed on this 20 figure by 2020 Natural gas and nuclear power are expected to grow slowly over the next 40 years at which point natural gas will start its decline It is also hoped that a new clean energy source of fusion energy will be demonstrated at increasing scales from 2030 to 2070 which will then
