广西苍梧县2017高考英语一轮阅读理解自练(二)文化教育型阅读 Just what is a tiger mother? Amy Chua is a law professor at Americas Yale University and her recent book on the subject is making waves.Shes been called “dangerous”, “outrageous”, even a “monster” for her descriptions of how she brought up her two daughters. Her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes fighting with a daughter for hours at the piano to ensure the child gets a piece of music right. She rejected birthday cards made for her by her girls because she didnt think they had made enough effort. She compared one child negatively with the other, threatening to burn their toys. Her rules include: schoolwork always comes first; an Aminus is a bad grade; children must be twoyears ahead of their classmates in math, and playing the violin or the piano is a must.Ms. Chua considers the Chinese hard work ethic as a way of creating happy, successful childrenat least in her case.Although shes had a large amount of flak for her theories, one thing cant be ignoredthe success of Chinese children in the education system. In Britain, shocking research shows that Chinese girls, for example, are outperforming all other foreign groups at GCSE79 percent getting 5 AC Grades, compared with 58 percent of white British girls. So what is it about Chinese parenting thats leading to high achievers? As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the babys point of view. Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have no idea of where a babys blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth. It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four- hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock- watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. Ive never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldnt follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks. Well, at last we havecopper- bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商) scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (样本) of 10, 419 children born in the early 1990s, taking account of parental education, family income, a childs sex and age, the mothers health and feeding style. These results dont surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels. I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeding practices. 1. According to Paragraph 2, one reason why a baby cries is that it feels.A. sickB. upsetC. sleepyD. hungry2. So what is my problem? On the surface, Im probably a bit of homebodyAnd I just find the pressure of being on holiday too severe: it always feels like having a gun held to my head and being forced to have fun Somehow, packing a carefully itemized (详细列举的 )list of possessions and meeting a scheduled flight has none of the excitement of suddenly deciding to take a day off and driving somewhere for the fun of it Thankfully, I am not alone This summer, most of my friends have decided not to have a break And a recent survey highlighted the downside(负面)of holidays, with the results showing that nearly two thirds of people found that the calming effects of a holiday wore off within 24 hours, as stress levels returned to normalAnd this years the Idler magazine published its hook, Awful Holidays Here you will find a list of the five most ecologically-damaging vacations its possible to take, along with 50 horrible holidays experiences voted for on the idler website Over the last decade, The Idler has become well known for promoting the idea of an easy, lazy lifeThe leisure(休闲)industry might seem an unlikely target of its criticism, but Dan Kienan, the book s editor, says that he was flooded with entrie
