This is based on a study involving about 900, 000 people, spanning many years. The study, started in 1992 by the American Cancer Society, included men and women from all 50 states. The youngest participants were 30 years old, and the average age was 57. By December 2008, 24% of the participants had died, just a quarter of them from cancers. In analyzing the results, researchers attempted to take account of such potential factors as smoking, drinking alcohol, taking aspirin and a wide variety of other factors that might otherwise affect the results. The results are clear: the more you weigh, the greater your risk of dying of cancer will be (up to 52% higher for men and 62% for women). In men as well as women, the only cancers that did not have a strong connection with weight were lung cancer and brain cancer. For women, the strongest correlation with weight was uterine cancer (子宫癌), which is 6.5 times higher for women with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more. For men, it was liver cancer, which is 4.5 times higher in most obese (肥胖的) men.Smokers tend to be more successful in keeping weight off than nonsmokers, slightly reducing the risk. But many of them dont have good lungs. Thus, in another way, they also face risks. As for why extra weight leads to excess cancer death rate, theres no clear agreement. But the decrease in vitamin D in obese people seems a likely factor. Vitamin D is known to have a role in preventing cancer. Also, there is a simple fact that obesity makes the management of cancer more difficult. Although for now there is no simple answer to why obesity increases a persons cancer risk, all we know for certain is that the risk is real.1The passage is mainly concerned with the relationship between_.Adiet and cancer Bbody weight and cancerCsex and cancer Dsmoking and cancer2The author develops the passage mainly through_.Atime order Bspace orderCanalysis and comparison Dfigures and examples3The underlined word “spanning” in the first paragraph probably means“_”Alasting BincludingChappening Dchanging4According to the passage, what can we learn about the study?AThere is a clear explanation concerning why obesity leads to more cancers.BGenerally speaking, women face fewer risks of dying of cancer than men.CWomen with a BMI of 40 dying of uterine cancer are more than other women.DSmokers are still likely to face risks of dying of cancer though keeping weight off.B(2015扬州中学模拟)Everyone has those nights you lie in your bed for hours, tossing and turning, totally unable to fall asleep. You wish you could just turn your brain off as if it were a light. That would make things much easier, wouldnt it?Now it looks like you are one step closer to this wild dream of yours scientists from Oxford University, UK have just discovered the “switch” that tells the brain to go to sleep, reported Forbes. To understand the study, you first need to know that there are two mechanisms (机能) that regulate sleep. Theres one that were already familiar with our body clock, which works in a 24hour cycle based on the light changes throughout the day.The other one is what scientists call the sleep “homeostat (动态平衡系统)”. This mechanism has nothing to do with daylight. Instead, it keeps track of the brains waking hours and urges it to rest if it has been awake for a long time. “It is similar to the thermostat (自动调温器) in your home. A thermostat measures temperature and switches on the heating if its too cold,”Professor Gero Miesenbck, who led the study, told The Telegraph. Our bodies use both of the mechanisms to regulate sleep. “The body clock says its the right time, and the sleep thermostat has built up pressure during a long waking day,” explained Miesenbck. There is no way that scientists can track the body clock. But with the sleep homeostat, there might be something they can do.The researchers found that the sleep homeostat works by activating a specific group of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain. They tested their theory on fruit flies by removing the neurons from the insects brains. And as expected, they found that the flies without the homeostat neurons did not keep a regular sleep pattern anymore. Now that scientists have pinpointed (定位) the exact place in the brain or, the “switch” that regulates sleep, they can begin investigating (研究) how to activate these cells at any given time so that people can be sent to sleep instantly.More importantly, figuring out how sleep mechanisms work may also help us to one day unravel one of the oldest mysteries of all: why do we need to sleep in the first place?5What is the article mainly about?AA new way to treat sleep disorders.BThe discovery of the sleep “homeostat”CAdvice on what to do when you fail to fall asleep.DA comparison of the two mechanisms that regulate sleep.6How does the author explain the function of the sleep homeostat?AThrough examples.BWith comparisons.CThrough cause and effect analysis.DBy presenting research findings.7What can we conclude from the article?AGenerally, the sleep homeostat has less effect on people during the day than at night.BThere is little scientists can do to affect the way the sleep homeostat works.CWhat makes us go to sleep at night is probably a combination of the two mechanisms.DThe more homeostat neurons there are in ones brain, the more easily one can fall asleep.8The underlined word “unravel”in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _.Aput up with Bfigure outCkeep track of Dtake notice of答 案.1. take possession of sth. 和 in the possession of sb. principle“原则,原理”;dimension“方面,侧面”;potential“潜力”;boundary“界限,分界线”。 let out“发出(叫声),泄露”;wipe out“擦掉,消灭”;make out “辨别出,辨认出”。 relevant“相关的,切题的”;considerate“周到的,体贴的”; abnormal“反常的”;beneficial“有益的”。 “如果是这样的话,我们能自己修理这台电脑吗?”if any“如果有的话”;if ever“如果曾经有过的话”;if only“要是就好了”;if so“如果是这样的话”。 advocate“提倡”;accumulate“积累,积聚”;accelerate“(使)加快”;appreciate“感激,欣赏”。 在“It is vital that .” 由up to now 可知应用现在完成时。
