comparable with that of Aristotle until almost the beginning of the nineteenth century In the first striking contributions to man s knowledge of life is the sea the leader in these discoveries was Edward Forbes Generalizing from studies he made in shallow depth Forbes was convinced that there was no life on the bottom below 550 meters This was an error to be sure but a very stimulating one for scientists set to work to put Forbes theory to the test Within twenty years after his death they had proved that such types of animals as sea stars worms and mollusks 软体动物 lived on the ocean bottom at depths of more than one and one half kilometers From later explorations men came to know that such creatures occur on the bottom in the deepest parts of the ocean more than ten kilometers beneath the surface of the sea The Challenger expedition was organized by men who were students of Forbes and were carrying out the work that he started The results of the expedition were published in fifty huge volumes They are still a model for contributors to the sciences of oceanography and marine biology 5 The study of marine life began from A Greece B The 3rd century B C C Aristotle D All of the above 6 last month but he hasn t shown any sign of age since his first screen appearance in 1928 And Mickey Mouse is not about to retire Mickey starred in countless films greeted thousands of children at Disney parks and features on T shirts and souvenirs 纪念品 all over the world It is difficult to believe that the mighty 强大的 Mickey was actually a replacement for an earlier Disney cartoon character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Both Mickey Mouse and Oswald Rabbit were created by Walt Disney and a friend and business partner Ub Iwerks both of whom died in the 1970s but Mickey is still going strong Mickey Mouse made his first screen appearance in the cartoon Steamboat Willie in 1928 Although Mickey Mouse was a new character he looked a lot like Oswald If you took off Oswald s long rabbit ears and put on little round ears there would be a striking similarity said Robert Tieman who deals with historical records at the Walt Disney Co The idea for Mickey also came from the mice drawn for the Alice in Cartoonland series a collection of about 60 cartoons drawn between 1922 and 1927 and which contained a number of mice The story of Mickey Mouse s creation has changed with time For many years the company gave credit 荣誉 only to Walt Disney but more recently it has been recognized that Ub Iwerks also played a part Tieman said that for years Walt was said to be the sole 唯一的 creator of Mickey because of business reasons So for many years the official story was that Disney thought up the character of a mouse on his way back to California from New York after he had lost the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit But in reality he never had the rights to Oswald Tieman said Universal Studios later got the rights to Oswald and still holds them But these days Oswald has been stored away and forgotten while Mickey is still the King of cartoons 6 18 The underlined word He in the first paragraph refers to A Walt Disney B Mickey Mouse C Oswald the Lucky Rabbit D Tieman 19 Which of the following is NOT true according to the text A Oswald was once popular B Mickey Mouse has appeared not only in films C Mickey Mouse was created by Ub Iwerks in fact D Mickey is like Oswald in appearance 20 The best title for the text would be A Mickey King of Cartoons Stays Young B Who Created Mickey and Oswald C Walt Disney a Great Man D Disney and His Cartoon Characters The main elements required for survival are food fire shelter and water Their order of importance will depend upon where you happen to be In the desert water will head the list in polar regions shelter condition of being protected and fire will be the main concerns Ordering your priorities thing that is more important than the others is the first step to survive It takes a healthy person quite a long time to die of starvation for the body can use up its stored resources but exposure to wind rain and cold can e fatal even in mild climates and death comes in only minutes in the icy waters of the poles Food is rarely the first priority Even in those places where it is difficult to find there are usually other problems to face first Shelter will often be the first necessity in extremes of climate such as temperatures such as in the frozen polar regions or in the baking deserts The need for fire is closely linked Water is something that most people in the modern world take for granted They are so used to turning on a tap that until an extreme drought causes water shortage they seldom think about it Yet the survivor at sea or after a flood though surrounded by water may need drinking water very badly And there are many places where unless it rains no obvious water is available Although there would be other survival necessities to deal with water is always universally important 21 The factor which decides the order of importance for the main elements required for survival is A your health B where you are C your job D your strength 22 The basic need that may NOT be equally important as the others in extremely cold place is A water B shelter C fire D food 23 Fire is described as A universally important B being taken for granted C the basic necessity D closely linked with shelter 24 According to the passage which of the following statements is TRUE A Exposure to wind is not dangerous in mild climates B People may die quickly in the water of polar regions C looking for food is the first thing to do most of the time 7 D Survivors after a flood won t need water for drinking We are so used to our life on the surface of the earth that it can be quite an effort for our minds to break free of all the ideas that we take for granted We talk about up and down but we know that what is down for us is up for someone on the other side of the world Because we can feel that things are heavy we think of weight as being a fixed quality in an object but it is not really fixed at all If you could take a quarter of a pound packet of butter 4 000 miles out from the earth it would weigh only a quarter of a pound Why would things weigh only a quarter as much as they do at the surface of the earth if we took them 4 000 miles out into space The reason is this All objects have a natural attraction for all other objects this is called gravitational attraction 重引力 But this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart When the butter was at the surface of the earth it was 4 000 miles from the center in other words the radius 半径 of the earth is 4 000 miles When we took the butter 4 000 miles out it was 8 000 miles from the center which is twice the distance If you double the distance between two objects their gravitational attraction decreases two times two If you triple the distance it gets nine times weaker three times three If you take it four times as far away it gets sixteen times weaker four times four and so on 25 What is up for us the Chinese is A down for the Japanese B up for the Germany C down for the Americans D up for the France 26 If we take a one pound packet of butter 4 000 miles out from the earth it will weigh A one fourth pound B one pound C two pounds D one fifth pound 27 If a satellite which weigh fifty tons flew 20 000 miles away from the earth how much would it weigh A One ton B Ten tons C Five tons D Two tons The violin is known as the queen of instrument Of the more than one hundred musicians in a great orchestraorchestra over thirty are violinists The violin s high rank is due to the beauty of its tone and its wide range of expression The violin took many centuries to develop Its history begins in India where the use of a bow to play stringed instruments was probably invented During the early Middle Ages in Europe various stringed instruments were played with a bow One of these was the vielle 六弦提琴 which was probably introduced to Europe in the 10th century Like the violin the vielle was held against the player s shoulder Later the vielle was changed through the influence of rebec 三弦古琴 This was an Arabic instrument that spread from Spain to the rest of Europe By combining the solid body of the vielle with the clever arrangement of the pegs 琴栓 in the rebec a new group of instruments was born 8 The violin received its basic form between 1550 and 1600 Since that time it has changed only in small ways The most successful violins were made in the 17th and 18th centuries Italy produced famous families of violin makers Probably the greatest of these was Antonio Stradivarius 1644 1737 Stradivarius is called the master of all master
