they have another ability Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long They hope to find ways to fight the aging process 过程 in human beings Last week the group of scientists said they had found important biological 生物学 qualities in bat species 种类 The group studied bat chromosomes 染色体 a line of genes found in the nucleus 核 of cells The scientists were very interested in the ends of the chromosomes They are called telomeres 端粒 Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes which shorten each time a cell divides Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down This month a report on bats was published in the journal Science Advances One of the leaders of the study was Emma Teeling a biologist in Ireland Teeling said studying long living mammals is another way to prove the molecular 分子 basis of continued health length She added that studying bats made scientists learn more about the processes that drive healthy aging The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species They used information that had been collected over 60 years Of these bats the greater mouse eared bat generally lived the longest an average of 37 years The scientists said this and a connected species named Myotis had telomeres that did not shorten with age Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age reaching 41 years The scientists findings suggest that these bats cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres This they said helps guard against the aging process Based on its body size a bat like the greater mouse eared bat would be expected to live four years But these mammals are found to live nearly 10 times longer than that 第 6 页 共 17 页 The scientists found that successful women engineers invited middle school girls in South Carolina US to take part in the program every year in May On the program they talk to the girls and give them fun activities to try out These help them learn about the fun side of engineering This year the girls learns to make paper boats and they used their breath 呼吸 to make the boats move Laura Kate an eighth grader told the Aiken Standard newspaper that she was not sure to take up engineering as her job yet but she found the program was a lot of fun In many countries the number of women engineers is small The main reason is that women lose interest in engineering at a young age We want to let the girls know there is a choice for them said Monica Philips one of the engineers 1 How often do people hold the program A Once a has become science fact For the first time scientists have made a robot that can take a beating 挨打 and keep on going Scientists from Cornell University made the robot which looks like a spider with four legs Until now even the most advanced 先进的 robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged That is because its computer inside simply doesn t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed To deal with this problem the scientists put eight motors 发动机 and two sensors 传感器 that read how the machine is working They all give signals to the machine s software Using this information the computer can then figure out the machine s shape at any moment The new technology is a big advance in robot making scientists say and it s far from scary It may someday help scientists create better artificial 假的 arms and legs and give new freedom 第 12 页 共 17 页 to people who lose them It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it s damaged says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US With this work we are nearer to solving this problem 1 Why do robots easily break down when they are damaged A They cannot repair themselves B The computer has changed a lot C They have no computers inside D The computer cannot work if the robot changes 2 The new technology allows the robot to A do house work for humans B keep working after being damaged C remember a lot of information D tell people where it is 3 The underlined word them in Paragraph 5 refers to A sensors B robots C arms and legs D scientists 4 How do the sensors in the robot work A They can replace the computer when it s broken B They can find out where the damage comes from 第 13 页 共 17 页 C They help the computer learn the robot s condition D They can send signals to the person who uses the robot 5 The passage is probably from A an advertisement B a tour
