And while in most settings a title like this would be considered insulting (无礼的) here,it is liked by both the dog owners who come from all over the world and the visitors that come to cheer the contestants. To mark this special anniversary, this years fair that was themed “Dog Days of Summer” featured among other things, including an exhibit featuring the contestants and winners from the last 25 years. As for the winner? Unlike last year, when he had flown in all the way from London,England, this years title winner was Chico,California resident Walle, who beat out 29 other equally “ugly contestants”. The refreshing part was that Walle, who happened to be a last minute entrant(参赛者),is not a nearly hairless,Chinese Crested Chihuahua or a mix of both breeds, which have been dominating the contest for many years now. Instead,he is a mutt mixpart beagle, part basset and part boxer. The fouryearold impressed the judges with his giant head and humped back. As one of them put it,he looked as though he had been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals. It exactly represents the kind of natural “ugliness” they were looking for!Along with the title, the first time entrant received a cash prize of $1,500 as well as scheduled appearances on NBCs weekend Today on Sunday, the Today Show on Monday and the Jimmy Kimmel Show on Wednesday.Though the competition may seem unbelievable to some people,it is held just for fun and organized by an animal psychiatrist who not only vets the dogs before they enter the competition to ensure they are healthy, but also has a “pet” talk with them to ensure they are also happy. It is also important to remember all the contestants come from homes where they are loved because of their rather unusual looks. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!【解题导语】在2013年6月21日举行的世界上最丑的狗的比赛上,一条三个品种的杂交狗赢得了“世界上最丑的狗”这个头衔。1What makes this years winner of the contest special?AThat it is a nearly hairless dog.BThat it is a mix of both breeds.CThat it is a mix of several breeds.DThat has constantly won the contest.答案C细节理解题。根据第三段的Instead,he is a mutt mixpart beagle, part basset and part boxer.可知这条狗的特别之处在于是三个品种的杂交狗。2Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that the dog _Ais very popular with dog loversBwas produced mainly for the contestCwasnt thought to be ugly by all the judgesDreally deserves the title of the “Worlds Ugliest Dog”答案D推理判断题。根据第四段的he looked as though.natural “ugliness” they were looking for! 可知这条狗真够格拥有“世界上最丑的狗”这个头衔。3What will the dog do after winning the contest?AIt will go to some TV shows.BIt will appear in some movies.CIt will receive a prize of $15,000.DIt will take part in some other contests.答案A细节理解题。根据第五段的as well as scheduled.on Wednesday可知这条狗赢得比赛后会去参加几个电视节目。41Whats the purpose of holding the contest?ATo attract more attention to dogs.BTo tell people how to choose dogs.CTo insult the ugliest dogs in the world.DTo make dog owners and people have fun.答案D细节理解题。根据末段的it is held just for fun可知这个比赛纯粹是为了好玩,故选D。阅读理解解读Handball is a hugely popular sport in Europe and Asia, and it is one of the fastest and most exciting sports in the world. It combines basketball and soccer with the attracting saves of water polo.Handball is played on an indoor court ( the size of two basketball courts ) and there are goals at each end. There are twelve players on each team, two goal keepers and ten field players, but there is a maximum of one goalkeeper and six field players from each team allowed on the court at any one time. The goalkeeper uses hands, feet, head and body to keep out the other teams shots. The origins of handball are unclear. Many people believe that it developed as a training game for soccer, to be played in the off season, or when it was snowing. As another warm winter approaches, the city can expect the normal clouds of smoke caused by air pollution. But things may start to improve soon. The government is co-operating with a US-based environmental protection agency to update existing buses and trucks with clean fuel technology. The new technology could reduce air pollutants in existing diesel engines(柴油机)by 40 percent. The programme will begin by testing buses in Beijing to see if the technology can be applied to them. “We encourage the development of public transports. But at the same time we need to reduce pollution from them, ”said an official. Efforts are being made to improve the capitals environment with tighter controls on emissions(排放). Some heavily polluting factories and construction sites, such as those owned by the steel giant Shougang Group, have been asked to cut production in November and December or be closed. Beijing was the third polluted city in the world at the end of last century, according to the UN. But thanks to recent measures, the capital has made some progress. Last year 224 clear days were rated as having good air quality. In 1998 the air quality index(指数)gave just 100 days as good. “I am glad to see an improvement, ”said a senior 1 boy living in the northwest of Beijing. “Compared to other places, the air quality of Beijing is still worrying though. I hate pollution. Once I was riding my bike in the morning when I almost had a traffic accident because I couldnt see a car only metres away from me in fog. ”In early October, the skies were covered by such a thick fog that a display show by the visiting French Air Force was called off. Rapid development, industry, traffic fumes and sandstorms from the desert all contribute to the citys bad air. 29. The passage is mainly about. These satellitebased systems provide turnbyturn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But they can also cause a lot of problems, sending you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The center studies humancomputer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPSequipped car to use during his stay.Barry Brown:“And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination.” And, then it wasnt until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the_GPS_is_kind_of_“garbage_in_garbage_out”Mr Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment.Barry Brown:“One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that its going to the wrong place.”Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in peoples cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.”Barry Brown: “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what youre doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.”Barry Brown says this goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational (导航) skills.“The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS” lists several areas
