高考学习网 中国最大高考学习网站 G 我们负责传递知识 Peer Mediation Helping Students Resolve Conflicts At the end of a school day when most children are outside playing or enjoying after school activities a small group of fourth fifth and sixth graders at the Angelo School attend one of their weekly Peer Mediation Training Sessions Their advisor Ms Kim Saraiva Health Education teacher at the Angelo works with this select group of students to guide them and educate them in this excellent program which enables peers to resolve disputes using a process involving talking and active listening Students are trained to develop and refine the necessary skills for effective communication Students need to apply to be a Peer Mediator and they need their parents permission Teachers recommendations are given and interviews are conducted Finally each student who has been selected will go through a training session and commit to weekly meetings The peer mediators usually work in pairs and are scheduled for duty by their advisors They help students to express their conflict and find their own best solutions The characteristics of a Peer Mediator are Demonstrates good communication skills Lends support to everyone involved in conflict Is able to remain non judgmental Respects confidentiality Works well as a team member Practices good problem solving skills Maintains good self control Shows responsibility for own words and actions Exhibits enthusiasm and confidence Goals of the Peer Mediation Program Mediators gain confidence in their ability to help themselves Mediators use their skills if they are ever involved in a conflict Other students learn from the mediator how to better get along with each other 高考学习网 中国最大高考学习网站 G 我们负责传递知识 Arguments decrease so students spend more time learning All students involved in mediation improve their communication skills Students and teachers are able to work together in a more friendly relaxed way The responsibilities of Peer Mediators are Confidentiality Meeting once a week after school Keeping grades up Making up any missed work because mediations take place during the school day whenever needed Respecting school rules The Peer Mediation Program available at most of Brockton s public schools is presented to all the students in the school Students in conflict can choose to use it Mediators obtain consent from all who are involved Participation must be voluntary and each member must agree to work together to resolve their conflict Some thoughts on Peer Mediation I liked having people my own age help me to solve my conflict with another student Student Kennedy School As a Peer Mediator I have developed better communication skills Elementary Peer Mediator Many children benefit from the mediation training in terms of solving their own conflicts Elementary School Teacher The communication skills these children learn they can take from here and use in their everyday lives as they grow older Elementary School Teacher I am constantly impressed by the manner in which our students are traine
