She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didnt pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said seriously, “You let that be the last time youve ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mothers words sound simple, but its been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.Its not just something I believe in; its a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑微) they may be.At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”Ive become vice president, but it hasnt changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mothers advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. Ive learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too.24. He gave him the seat.27. What does the author think of saying hello to people?A. Its a way to show sympathy to people.B. It can build connections with others.C. Its a must to become a president.D. It can bring him what he wants. CWhen a leafy plant is under attack, it doesnt sit quietly. Back in 1983,two scientists,Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds,VOCs for short. Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .Its a plants way of crying out.But is anyone listening? Apparently.Because we can watch the neighbors react. Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers. Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch. In study after study, it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors. The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking ,stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do. Does this mean that plants talk to each other? Scientists dont know. Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so, in effect, was talking to itself. Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry. So information was exchanged, but it wasnt a true, intentional back and forth. Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. Theres a whole lot going on.28. What does a plant do when it is under attack?A. It makes noises. B. It gets help from other plants.C. It stands quietly D. It sends out certain chemicals.29. What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraph 3?A. The attackers get attacked. B. The insects gather under the table.C. The plants get ready to fight back. D. The perfumes attract natural enemies.30.Scientists find from their studies that plants can_ .A.predict natural disasters B.protect themselves against insectsC.talk to one another intentionally D.help their neighbors when necessary31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.The word is changing faster than ever.B.People have stronger senses than beforeC.The world is more complex than it seemsD.People in Darwins time were more imaginative.D Believe it or not, the size of the human brain has become smaller over the past 20,000 years. Scientists argue over whether this means we are becoming more or less intelligent as a species. The size of the average modern human brain has declined 10 percent over the period from 1,500 to 1,359 cubic centimeters. The missing brain matter is roughly the size of a tennis ball.“Id called that a major downsizing (规模减小) in an evolutionary eye blink (眨眼),” John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin, US, told Discover magazine. Why is the brain becoming smaller? There are different theories to explain it. One is that tens of thousands of years ago, before the decline began, to survive in cold, dangerous conditions humans needed a stronger and larger body and therefore, a larger head. Also they had to chew the tough meat of rabbits, foxes and horses. As conditions improved, the brain stopped growing, according to supporters of this theory.Another theory comes from a recent study by David Geary and Drew Bailey from the University of Missouri, US. They looked at the relationship between brain size and social environment between 1.9 million and 10,000 years ago, when the social environment was becoming increasingly complex. They found that brain size decreased as population density (密度) increased.“As complex societies emerged (出现), the brain became smaller because people did not have to be as smart to stay alive,” Geary told AFP.But smaller brain size does not necessarily mean that modern humans are less smart than their ancestors. Modern humans simply developed different, more complex forms of intelligence, said Brian Hare, an assistant professor at Duke University, US.Hares studies focus on two types of great ape (黑猩猩): chimpanzees and bonobos. Both are much like humans, but are physically quite different from one another. The bonobo has a smaller brain than the chimpanzee and is also much less aggressive and more tolerant. When it comes to working out a problem, Hare says, chimpanzees are much less likely to accomplish it if it involves working together. Not so with bonobos.“The smaller brain in modern humans may be evidence that we can cooperate,” Hare told the US National Public Radio.32. The main purpose of article is to _.A. explain why human brains have become smallerB. analyze the effect of living conditions on human brain sizeC. inform about theories about the smaller human brainD. state what a smaller human brain means to modern humans33. Some scientists believe the human brain has become smaller because _.A. humans no longer need to compete to get foodB. living conditions have changed for the betterC. foods have become complex and tastyD. population density has decreased34. According to the text, David Geary _. A. considers the smaller human brain to be a sign of lower intelligenceB. mainly studies the social environment between 1.9 million and 10,000 years agoC. claims human brains may have become smaller in size, but more efficientD. believes human brain size decreased in a short time considering human history35. From the article, we can conclude _.A. the brain size has nothing to do with body sizeB. the author is worried about the downsizing of the human brainC. chimpanzees are smarter than bonobos, which are physically quite differentD. Brian Hare thinks that the decrease in brain size may be a sign of improving ability to cooperate第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)。 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。IusedtorollmyeyesmanytimesbeforeIcouldgetup.Recently,thingshavechangedafterIreadstorieslikethisone,“Gettingupearlychangedmylife”.Herearethe benefitsIveseensofarfromchangingmyworkoutroutine.Ihavemoreenergy.AsIsaid,IvebeenasleepypersonwhileIstilllovesleeping.Inowhaveanextraburstofenergy.Imlessweak intheoffice, andmybrainismoreattentiveandreadytowork.Once, 36,notevencoffeecouldgetmereadyfortheday.Butnowagoodworkoutcan.I have more confidence. The enough energy rolled into more energy.
