Today, Finland is still small and, although it has grown more diverse, it is still much more homogeneous than countries such as the United States. But no one calls Finlands public schools mediocre any more.In 2000, the Finns surprised the world when their 15-year-olds scored at the top of a closely watched international exam called the PISA, the Program for International Student Assessment. Finland has stayed near the top ever since, while the U.S. scores around the middle.Pasi Sahlberg, an official with Finlands Ministry of Education and Culture, recently shared the story of Finlands success, and what states like Washington could learn from it.Sahlbergs message, although he is too polite to put it so frankly: stop testing so much; trust teachers more; give less homework and shorten the school day.In a room filled with teachers, principals, professors, school-board members and policy makers, Sahlberg joked about the Finns reputation for being quiet, humble people. When Finland hit the top of the PISA, he said, the biggest disbelievers were Finns.More seriously, he said, Finland never set out to create the worlds top school system. Instead, he said, the country decided in the 1970s that it wanted to ensure that a students success didnt depend on the family background. To achieve that goal, Finland relied on cooperation among teachers and schools, rather than on competition. Rather than judging teachers and schools based on test scores, he said, Finland puts trust in its teachers and principals. Teachers develop the curriculum in Finland, and design their own tests. There are no national tests, except one at the end of high school.Thats just the start. Along with a shorter school day, Finnish students dont even start school until they are 7 years old. Many primary schools have a policy against giving homework. Finland, he said, succeeded in part by adapting ideas from the U.S. and other countries. And those countries, he said, can learn from Finland, too.56. What might be the authors purpose in writing the passage?A. To introduce a Finnish official.B. To ask the US to improve its education.C. Extending your normal exercise routine by a few minutes may be the solution, according to Penn State researchers, who found that peoples satisfaction with life was higher on days when they exercised more than usual.“We found that peoples satisfaction with life was directly impacted by their daily physical activity,” said Jaclyn Maher, a graduate student in kinesiology. “The findings stress the idea that physical activity is health behavior with important consequences for daily well-being and should be considered when developing national policies to enhance satisfaction with life.” The team examined the influence of physical activity on satisfaction with life among emerging adults ages 18 to 25 because their sense of well-being appears to worsen more quickly than at any other time during adulthood. “Emerging adults are going through a lot of changes; they are leaving home for the first time and attending college or starting jobs,” said Maher. “As a result, their satisfaction with life can plummet. We decided to focus on emerging adults because they stand to benefit most from strategies to enhance satisfaction with life.” The researchers recruited (招募) two groups of college students. The first group, with 190 individuals, entered information into a diary every day for eight days. The second group, with 63 individuals, entered information into a secure website every day for 14 days. Both groups answered questions aimed at determining participants satisfaction with life, physical activity and self-esteem. For the second group, the researchers wanted to further investigate whether physical activity was indeed the cause of participants increased satisfaction with life rather than some other factors such as mental health, tiredness, or Body Mass Index (体质指数). “Shifts in depression, anxiety and stress would be expected to influence a persons satisfaction with life at any given point in time,” said David Conroy, professor of kinesiology. “In addition, tiredness can be a barrier to engaging in physical activity, and a high Body Mass Index associated with being overweight may cause a person to be less satisfied in a variety of ways.”However, the team found that exercising just a little more than usual can significantly improve a persons satisfaction with life. 61. What Jaclyn Maher said in the second paragraph indicates that _. A. physical activity is the most important factor for peoples healthB. there are many factors determining peoples satisfaction with lifeC. governments should attach great importance to peoples physical activity D. peoples satisfaction with life is related with the countrys development62. The underlined word “plummet” is the closest in meaning to _.A. fall B. appear C. increase D. change63. The researchers decided to focus on emerging adults because they _.A. are eager to live a happy life the most of all B. can accept those new strategies very easilyC. need most to improve their satisfaction with life D. are young people without any life experiences64. We learn about the research that _.A. the first group had more satisfaction with lifeB. the second group needed to answer questions onlineC. both groups didnt taken part in any physical activitiesD. it was conducted to find whether people are satisfied with their life65. What advice will the researchers probably give us based on the study result?A. Try to use some work time to have more physical activities.B. Help develop emerging adults good habit of physical activity. C. The more you take part in sports, the better health you will have. D.
