1A2D3B4D5C1A2D3B4A5DReading ComprehensionThe biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun, but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation industry, has recommended that all airlines ban such devices from being used during critical stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights. The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircrafts computers. Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. But, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who cant hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the musics too loud.1. The passage is mainly about _A_.A. a possible cause of aircraft crashesB. the defects of electronic devicesC. effective safety measures for air flightD. a new regulation for all airlines2. What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?DA. They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.B. They were proved to have been caused by the passengers portable computers.C. They may have taken place during take-off and landing.D. They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.3. Few airlines want to impose a total ban on their passengers using electronic devices because _B_A. they have other effective safety measures to fall back onB. most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassetteplayersC. they dont believe there is such a danger as radio interferenceD. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved4. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic fields on an airplanes computers?DA. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.B. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane.C. Because experts lack adequate equipment to do such research.D. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in labs.5. It can be inferred from the passage that the author _C_.A. has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interferenceB. regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flightC. hasnt formed his own opinion on this problemD. is in favor of prohibiting passengers use of electronic devices completelyThere are desert plants which survive the dry season in the form of inactive seeds. There are also desert insects which survive as inactive larva (幼虫. In addition, difficult as it is to believe, there are desert fish which can survive through years of drought in the form of inactive eggs. These are the shrimps (虾 that live in the Mojave Desert, an intensely dry region in the southwest of the United States where shade temperatures of over 50C are often recorded. The eggs of the Mojave shrimps are the size and have the appearance of grains of sand. When sufficient spring rain falls to form a lake, once every two to five years, these eggs hatch. Then the water is soon full of millions of tiny shrimps about a millimetre long which feed on tiny plant and animal organisms which also grow in the temporary desert lake. Within a week, the shrimps grow from their original 1 millimetre to a length of about l.5 centimetres.Throughout the time that the shrimps are rapidly maturing the water in the lake equally rapidly evaporates. Therefore for the shrimps it is a race against time. By the twelfth day, however, when they are about 3 centimetres long, hundreds of tiny eggs form on the underbodies of the females. Usually by this time, all that remains of the lake is a large, muddy patch of wet soil. On the thirteenth day and the next, during the final hours of their brief lives, the shrimps lay their eggs in the mud. Then, having ensured that their species will survive, the shrimps die as the last of the water evaporates (蒸发.If sufficient rain falls the next year to form another lake, the eggs hatch, and once again the shrimps pass rapidly through their cycle of growth, adulthood, egg-laying, and death. Some years there is insufficient rain to form a lake; in this case, the eggs will remain dormant for another year, or even longer if necessary.1. What is unusual about the Mojave Shrimps?AA. They lay their eggs in the mud only.B. Their lives are very brief.C. Their eggs can survive in intensive dry region.D. They feed on plant and animal organisms.2. How long, can the Mojave
