Teaching Design of “Unit 9 Can you come to my party?”I. Analysis of the Teaching Materials This unit focuses on invitations. Section A aims to review “can you .?” and try to ask and answer it. Also, students need to accept and turn down invitations in a polite way and explain their reasons. Based on the vocabularies and structures students have learned, students need to learn how to make an invitation on paper in Section B. After making an invitation, they must know how to accept and turn down the invitation politely. The lesson provides students three e-mails about making, accepting and turning down invitations. These reading materials are not difficult for students to understand, but it is really difficult for them to complete the reading tasks by using skimming and scanning reading strategies. II. Analysis of the StudentsStudents in Grade 8 have learned certain amount of vocabularies, and their listening and speaking abilities have improved after learning in Grade 7. Although they have practiced their reading, they still have difficulties applying some reading strategies to reading materials. So they will be guided to read with some useful reading strategies. The topic for invitations will greatly arouse students interests. But the biggest challenge for students is their participation in class because of the lack of background knowledge about party culture in western countries and how to make, accept and turn down invitations politely.
