Hughes.Mr Hughes joins Bloomfield after 10 years at Aviom Global Enterprises. He brings expertise in freight forwarding (货运), international transport and information technology.Friday, January 15th, 11:30am, 1st floor conference roomDear fellow Bloomfield workers,I want to express my gratitude and joy at being selected to join your corporation. My special gratitude goes to CEO, Bernard Johnson who chose me for this position. As many of you may already know, I am well known for my preference toward technological and market solutions to the logistical challenges that we face today. This is a large part of the reason why I was chosen by Mr Johnson. What this means for us in the logistics department is that we will be relying increasingly on outside partners, either in New Zealand, or globally, to do many of the functions that we do now, and also I hope that many of the processes that drive our logistical network can be made more efficient by technological improvement. The business media has labeled me “Chainsaw Hughes” for some of the efficiencies I have created in my previous positions, which inevitably called for a measure of business rightsizing (裁员增效). However, I am not the “job killer” that I have been described as. I have never reduced staff unless it could show clear benefits to the corporation. I am a “value creator” and I think that all of you will come to understand that. I look forward to working with all of you. Robert J. Hughes1. Why is the notice written? A. BHow many times has someone invited you to his meeting, happy hour, coffee break, group vacation, hiking trip or dinner party and you find yourself dying to say “Id love to, but I have to teach my fish to read”? While youre thinking whether or not to tell a less strange lie to keep whats left of your free time that day, week, month or year, you feel so guilty that you are so unwillingly saying “yes”. You find yourself looking at a calendar which is jam-packed with events and you begin to hate the people who keep asking to occupy your time. When was the last time you said “no”? When you didnt say “no”, did you think those events would bring valuable experiences into your life experiences that might fuel your creativity and make you a more valuable, productive member of society? Well, that assumption may be wrong. As Drake Bauer writes, one of the keys to productivity is an empty calendar. “If we want to do the work that we want to do,” he writes, “we need to win our time how else can we spend it productively?” His piece, which will take up very little of your time to read, is worth it if only for encouragement to turn down the next invitation. Kevin Ashton nicely explains the value of “no” in creative peoples lives. He writes, “Time is the raw material of creation. Wipe away the magic and myth of creating and all that remains is work: the work of becoming expert through study and practice, the work of finding solutions to problems, the work of trial and error, the work of thinking and perfecting the work of creating. Creating consumes. It is all day, every day. It knows neither weekends nor vacations. It is not when we feel like it. It is habit. The common thread that links creators is how they spend their time. Therefore, in order to have that time to create more and become successful in your life, try saying “no”.5. What can we infer from the first paragraph?A. The train itself will carry 77kWh of Kokam battery storage, and will need only around 4kWh for each one-way trip, and will have the opportunity to charge up at several points in the day. It will also have a diesel engine (柴油机) to use in an emergency. The solar train project has been funded by Brian Flannery and his partner. Flannery made his fortune out of coal mining and he now owns the Elements resort in North Byron that will be linked to the township by the train.“We searched the country and found a disused old train, restored it, and are now powering it with a 4.6 billion year old power source,” saidJeremy Holmes, the development director at Byron Bay Railroad Company. The Byron Bay train will operate a limited service until January when the full schedule will begin.“With no support from government at any level the Byron Bay Railroad Company has delivered the worlds first solar train,” said John Grimes, Chief Executive at the Smart Energy Council. “True innovation meets roadblock upon roadblock so we congratulate this team on their incredible achievement. And the same goes for the bird world. “Each bird species has effectively its own language,” said Andy Radford, a professor of behavioral ecology at the University of Bristol. “And there might be similarities between some languages just as there are in the human world. And then there are other languages that sound extremely different, even though theyre conveying exactly the same meaning, just like English and Chinese.”In fact some birds are known to pick up on the “language” of other species in particular, theyve learned to detect danger by eavesdropping (偷听) on the alarm calls of other birds. Radford and his colleagues wanted to investigate how that learning occurs. So they first played an alarm call that fairly wrens, an Australian bird, shouldnt be familiar with using a computer-generated alarm call meant to copy a birds. The unfamiliar sound had no effect on the fairy wrens. But then the researchers paired the man-made call with a chorus of alarm calls the wrens would recognize. And after this training, the sound of the original unfamiliar man-made call alone was enough to make the birds duck. When the trained birds heard the man-made call the next time, they performed as if they received an alarm from their own species. The results are in the journal Current Biology. Radford says the study shows birds can learn from their peers, without ever seeing themor a predator either. “And so I think the coolest thing of all is that you can learn with your eyes shut about something really important in the natural world.”12.
