thecharts seeminglyat will:an instantlyidentifiable voice,eye-popping dancemoves,stunning musicalversatility,and loadsof sheerstar power.His1982blockbuster Thrillerbecame thebiggest-selling albumofall time(probably hisbest-known aomplishment),and he was the first blackartist tofind stardomon MTV,breaking downinnumerable boundariesboth for his raceand formusic videoas anart form.Yet asJacksons careerbegan,very gradually,to descendfrom thedizzying heightsof hispeak years,most of the medias attentionfocused onhis increasinglybizarre eentricities;hewasoften depictedas aman-child in a stateof arresteddevelopment,pletely shelteredfrom adultreality bya lifespent inshow business.The snickeringturned toscandal in1993,when Jacksonwas ausedof molestinga13-year-old boy;although hecategorically deniedthe charges,his out-of-court settlementfailed torestore histarnished image.He never quite escapedthe stigmaof thoseallegations,and whilehe continuedto sellrecords atsuperstar-like levels,he wasPaul McCartney,the sweetone,or JohnLennon,the funnyone.For others,it wasGeorge Harrison,the mysteryman,or RingoStarr,the bouncydrummer.The Beatleschanged popularmusic for alltime,with theirsongs and their sparklingpersonalities.THE BIRTHOF BEATLEMANIAAll fourBeatleswereborn inLiverpool,England.All four loved music,especially Americanrhythm-and-blues androck music.Lennon andMcCartney werethe mainsongwriters,with Harrison as theirbrilliant guitarist.When Starrjoined upin1962,the groupbegan rockingwith the songs“Love MeDo,”“Please PleaseMe,”“I Wantto HoldYour Hand,”and“She LovesYou.”In1964,the groupappeared onAmerican television?sTheEd SullivanShow.They wereseen by73million people,and thesensation knownas Beatlemaniawas launched.Screaming fansfollowed the Beatles everywhereand boughttheir recordsin unheard-of numbers.The moviesA HardDays Night (1964)and Help (1965)revealed the Beatles?energy andsense ofhumor.The groupseemed moreappealing thanever.In theirmusic,the Beatlesmoved fromsimple lovesongs tosongs aboutchanges takingplace in1960s society.The albumsRubber Souland Revolverwere consideredmusical breakthroughs.Performing beforeaudiences becametoo dangerousbecause of the crushof fans.The Beatlesgave theirlast publioncert in1966,but theykept onmaking records.Many considerSgt.Peppers LonelyHearts ClubBand (1967)to betheir finestalbum.THE BEATLESBREAK UPIn1970,the Beatlesannounced theirbreakup.Enormous popularityhad takenits toll,wearing themdown andcausing disagreements.Each oftheBeatleswent onto asolo career.But
