His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat.Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract peoples interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling lowprice goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.By 1919, Woolworth had over 1,000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was:“THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”21Frank took a short business course in order to _.Aearn more money for his familyBlearn something from a salesmanCget away from the farmDget enough to feed himself22Frank sold the odds and ends quickly because _.Ahe knew how to get people to buy his goodsBhe cut down the price by halfChe had put the goods on a table in a very nice wayDthe sign he put on the table was well designed23The price of the knives was cut down by half because_.Athe factory workers worked 24 hours a dayBknives were ordered in large quantities directly from the factoryCthe knives were made in Germany, where labour (劳动力) was cheapDthe knives were produced in one factory24“The customer is always right” suggests that_.Awhen the customer and shop assistant quarrel, the customer is always rightBIf you want to succeed, the rule is the only way outCstores must follow the customers orders if they want to make moneyDstores should try to meet the customers needs if they want to succeedBWhen I was 15, I announced to my English class that I was going to write and illustrate (为加插图) my own books.“Dont be silly, only geniuses can become writers,” the English teacher said.“. and_you_are_getting_a_D_this_semester.” I was so humiliated (屈辱的)That night I wrote a short sad poem and mailed it to the Capris Weekly newspaper. To my astonishment, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. They sneered (嘲笑) again. But I had tasted success. Id sold the first thing Id ever written. That was more than any of them had done.During the next two years I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and recipes. By the time I graduated from high school, with a C minus average, I had scrapbooks (剪贴簿) filled with my published work. I never mentioned my writing to my teachers, friends or family again. They were simply dream killers.Later I married and had children. I began my first book while the children were still young. It took nine months. I chose a publisher at random and put the manuscript (手稿) in an empty diapers (尿布) package, the only box I could find. The letter I enclosed (附上) read, “I wrote this book myself, I hope you like it.I also did the illustrations. Chapters 6 and 12 are my favorites. Thank you.” I mailed it without making a copy of the manuscript.A month later I received a contract (合同) and a request to start working on another book.Crying Wind, my book, became a bestseller, was translated into 15 languages and Braille and sold worldwide. My first book also became required reading in Native American schools in Canada.Ive written eight books. Four have been published and three are still out with the publishers. One stinks (写砸了). To all those who dream of writing, Im shouting at you:“Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Dont listen to them.” I dont write right but Ive beaten the odds. Writing is easy, its fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesnt hurt.By Linda Stafford25What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 imply?AThe teacher reminded the author to work harder to realize her ambition.BFollowing her bad grades, the teacher didnt believe the author could be a writer.CThe teacher laughed at the author because she did poorly in any of her subjects.DThe teacher hoped that the author could make progress that semester.26Why does the author call “them” dream killers?ABecause they often killed time by daydreaming.BBecause they made fun of her academic abilities.CBecause they might have prevented her from pursuing her ambition.DBecause they didnt want her to be a writer and tried to destroy her ambitions.27Which of the following statements is TRUE?AThe author chose a famous publisher to publish her first book.BSeven of the books the author wrote sold well across the world.CThe authors first book was well received in Canada.DThe author used to keep a copy of the manuscript before mailing it out.28What does the author intend to tell us with the story?AWriting is not as difficult as you might think.BBeing a writer needs good luck.CIt takes time and patience to be a writer.DDont be afraid to have big ambitions.CAn experimental vaccine (疫苗)developed to prevent outbreaks of Marburg (马尔堡病毒) hemorrhagic (出血的) fever continues to show promise in monkeys as an emergency treatment for accidental exposures to the virus that causes the disease. There is no licensed treatment for Marburg infection, which has a high fatality rate.In a study of rhesus macaques (恒河猴), 5 of 6 monkeys survived a fatal dose of Marburg virus when treated 24 hours after infection, and 2 of 6 survived when treated 48 hours after infection.Because rhesus macaques typically die of Marburg infection faster than humans, the postexposure treatment window might be extended even further in humans, the study authors say.The study, overseen by a scientific team from the National Institutes of Health and three other groups with expertise in viral hemorrhagic fevers, was posted online by the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.“Developing safe, effective, and rapidly effective postexposure treatments for filoviruses (丝状病毒) is an important scientific priority for our Institute,”says Anthony S. Fauci, M. D, director of NIHs National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). “The vaccine used in this study is among several novel approaches to treating filoviruses that show great potential.”The fact that three of the rhesus macaques in the current study showed evidence of Marburg virus in periodic blood tests, but later cleared the virus from their systems and survived, is particularly satisfying to Dr. Feldmann and Tom Geisbert, Ph. D. of Boston University. In addition, 14 days after infection, all of the rhesus macaques that survived showed moderate to high levels of antibodies (抗体) against Marburg virus. The scientists view this as proof that the vaccine worked as hoped.29.What would be the best title of this passage?AEvidence of Marburg Virus in Periodic Blood TestsBSeveral Novel Approaches to Treating FilovirusesCA Lethal Dose of Marburg Virus in HumansDExperimental Marburg Vaccine Prevents Disease Two Days After Infection30The underlined word in Paragraph 2 most probably means _.Aa kind of virusBa specified quantityCa kind of treatment Da type31From the passage, which of the passage is RIGHT?AThere is no treatment for Marburg infection.BMarburg belongs to filoviruses.CThere is only one approach to treating filoviruses.DAll of the rhesus macaques that survived the infection.32This passage can be classified as _.Aan advertisement Ba book reviewCa feature story Da news reportDThis week is National Volunteer Week, a time for the Canadian Red Cross to recognize our dedicated (献身的) volunteers who devote their time and talents from coast to coast.
