There are many topics which they can have free talks with each other. So its a chance for us to encourage the students to speak English bravely. Their logical thinking ability is good. However, their creative thinking ability and critical thinking ability are weak. 教学目标Teaching Aims知识目标Knowledge Aims1.Learn to use the new words:get on with, relation, communicate, argue, nervous, instead, whatever, offer, proper, secondly, explain2. The teacher show three pictures to the students. They are mother and son, father and son, two brothers. They are all photos of close friendship. And then, the teacher ask the students: Who are they? How do they feel?2. Students discuss next questions with their group members: Do they like each other? Are they friendly with each other? Do they get on well with each other? Do they have good or bad relations?3. Show a picture in which a husband and a wife are arguing. Then ask the students to answer the following questions. Who do you see? What are they doing? Do they get on well? Do they have good or bad relations?4. Show the four pictures together and ask students to discuss two kinds of relations-good or bad. Step 2 Predict1. The teacher show a picture. In the picture, a boy is worried. He is writing a letter. Then ask the students to answer the following questions:How does he feel? Who is he? What kind of problems do you think “Sad and Thirteen” might have? Let the students guess and give their answers.2. The teacher show some new words: get on with; argue; nervous; proper; communicate; 3. The students look at the pictures and predict the following questions: What is his problem? School, homework or family? The teacher write the students answers on the blackboard: He has too much homework to do. He math problem is too difficult for her. He doesnt get on well with her classmates. His parents refuse to buy him a mobile phone. .Step 3Read the first letter.1. The teacher ask the students to read the first letter and compare the content in the passage and his or her prediction. 2. The students skim the passage and answer the question: What is his problem? At the same time, check his or her prediction is right or wrong. 3. The students scan the passage and find the details: family members and their relations. 4. The students read the passage again and answer the questions.: What do his parents often do? Is his brother kind? Why? How does he feel at home?Step 4 Discuss1. After the students read the passage, the teacher says: We know what his problem is. Can you help him? Can you give him some advice? Then ask the students to discuss it with their partners. After the discussion, ask some students to share their advice to Sad and Thirteen. Sample: He should talk to her parents. Ask the students to read the second letter and underline Mr. Hunts advice. Let Students discuss Robert Hunts advice . I agree with him becauseS2:Im afraid I dont. I disagree with him because2. The students share their different opinions and give some good advice according to their own experience in order to develop their critical ability. For example: S1: I agree with him. Because more communication can make family members understand each other better and know about the feeling they have.S2: I agree with him, too. Maybe she could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication. S3: I dont agree with him. I think their parents shouldnt fight any more. They should care more about their children and spend more time with them.Step 6 Play a word game 1. The teacher say out words which the students have learned. Ask the students to find the words/ phrases with the same or similar meanings as the words in the letter in 3a.2.Ask the students to read the sentences which contain these words/phrases in the letter. 3. Then ask some questions with the words in order to let the students use them.Step 7 complete the mind-map and retellAsk the students to complete the mind-map and retell the letters in order to develop their logical ability.Step8 Speak1. Show a photo of Zhang Hengwei who isnt good at English. Beside the photo, Show the sentences:Now I need your help.Im not good at English.I feel nervous when I speak English.Help me!2. Have The students work in groups to discuss the advice in groups. After two minutes, the group leader give a report. Step 9Find friends and ask for advice1. The teacher show three pictures. Picture One: a girl who is arguing with her friend. Picture Two: A girl who is tired. Picture Three: A girl who has failed the exam2.The students take out a piece of paper and write their own problem in it. Then he go to her good friend. The friend writes some advice for him her.
