If one plate is slowly forced underneath the other, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This process causes the ground to move. It is an earthquake. In other words, earthquakes are the shaking of the earths surface caused by the earths rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain within the rocks is suddenly released (释放). The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and the time it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage. Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year. Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earthquakes around the world including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation that continues for years after the first tremor (小震). In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the necessary money to rebuild it.The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path. 36. Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?A. An earthquake comes from inside the earth. B. The earth has great energy in storage.C. How the earth plates move. D. How an earthquake happens.37. How many examples are used in the passage to show the damage and destruction earthquakes cause?A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.38. Which of the following is mentioned to show that an earthquake can kill too many people?A. The 1964 Alaskan quake. B. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake.C. The 1972 Managua earthquake. D. The 1906 earthquake.39. The underlined word “ensuing” in the last paragraph probably means _.A. causing too much heat and great damage B. causing many injuries and much destructionC. happening as a result of another event D. happening suddenly and unexpectedly40. By giving the example in Paragraph 4, the author wants to show that _.A. an earthquake doesnt last long B. the damage can last longC. people in Managua suffered too much D. Nicaragua is still a poor country B I suddenly heard an elephant crying as though frightened. Looking down, I immediately recognized that something was wrong, and ran down to the edge of the near bank. There I saw Ma Shwe with her three-month-old calf struggling in the fast-rising water, and it was a life-and-death struggle. Her calf was floating and screaming with fear. Ma Shwe was as near to the far bank as she could get, holding her whole body against the rushing water, and keeping the calf pressed against her huge body. Every now and then the rushing water would sweep the calf away. There was a sudden rise in the water and the calf was washed clean over the mothers body and was gone. Ma Shwe turned quickly to reach it and pressed the calf with her head and trunk(象鼻) against the rocky bank. Then with a huge effort, she picked it up in her trunk and tried until she was able to place it on a narrow shelf of rock. Just at this moment she fell back into the river. If she were carried down, it would be certain death. I knew, as well as she did, that there was one spot(地点) where she could get up the bank, but it was on the other side from where she had put her calf. While I was wondering what I could do next, I heard the sound of a mothers love. Ma Shwe had crossed the river and got up the bank and was making her way back as fast as she could, roaring (吼叫) all the time, but to her calf it was music.41. The moment the author got down to the river bank he saw _, A. the calf was about to fall into the river B. Ma Shwe was placing the calf on the rock C. the calf was washed away by the rising waterD. By taking it away with her. D. By carrying it on her back.43. How did the calf feel about the mother elephants roaring? A. It was a great comfort. B. It was a sign of danger. C. It was a call for help. D. It was a musical note.44. What can be the best title for the text? A. A Mothers Love B. A Brave Act C. A Deadly RiverD. A Matter of Life and Death C Five years ago, I was sent to a better middle school. For me, everything there was new and strange. After I had been there for two months, there was an important test in the middle of the term. It covered all my courses. In that test, I didnt get a good grade, but most of my classmates got an A. It made me upset for a long time. I felt everything in the world was changing. I thought my classmates were all better than me. During those days I was very unhappy. One day, my aunt, after talking with my teachers, talked to me. She told me to think about what I had done in the past and what I should do in the future. I was shocked by her words. I thought about what I had done during the past months, and I found I had done nothing to improve my grades. I thought I should work harder. After that, I paid more attention to the teachers talking in the classes, and I asked my teachers or my classmates when I didnt understand something. I studied very late at night when I met with difficult problems. Most of all, I came to understand the importance of taking notes in class. As a result, I did better in some tests. About three months later, the most important test came at the end of the term. This time, I stood out not only in my class but also in the grade. From then on, I have tried to do my best when I do something because I know if I want something, I should work hard for it. 36. Why did the writer fall behind in the new middle school? _A. Because the teachers didnt treat him well enough.B. Because the subjects were becoming more difficult. C. Because he hated the life in the new school. D. Because he didnt put his heart into study. 37. What did the writers aunt do to help him out? _ A. She punished him for not working hard. B. She helped him find out the reasons for his poor performance. C. She forced him to work harder. D. She asked his teachers to talk with him about his problems. 38. Which of the following studying methods helped the writer most?_ A. Asking teachers for help when in difficulty. B. Working deep into the night every day. C. Making notes in class. D. Listening to every word his teachers said. 39. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean? _ A. The writer failed again in the exam. B. The writer did very well in the exam. C. The writer became the cleverest in the class. D. The writer was very proud of his progress. 七选五 1 People use money to buy food, furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need or want. I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom. I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully. Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my favorite exercise DVD, Insanity. Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes. My heart races as I force my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise ,I feel extremely tired, but a smile is of my face. Its not a smile because the DVD is over , but a smile of success from pushing my body to its extreme limit. Some people enjoy shopping, smoking , food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmothers chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years , I have learned its okay to just say “no.” I shouldnt feel sorry for refusing food that I dont want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self confidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. Its through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.31.Why is there a smile on the authors face in the morning?A. Babies who watched 60 minutes of TV daily had developmental scores a third lower at 14 months than babies who were watching less TV. Although their developmental scores were still in the normal range, the difference may have been due to the fact that when children and parents are watching TV, they are missing the talking, playing and other communications that are important to learning and development. This new study, which appeared in the Aechives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, followed 259 lower-income families in New York, most of whom spoke Spanish as their primary language at home. Other studies of higher-income families have also come to the same conclusion: TV watching is not only non-educational, but it seems to slow down babies development. But what about “good” TV, like Sesame Street? The researchers didnt find any difference when compared to non-educational programs designed for small children, like Spongebob SquarePants. Earlier research by some of the same scientists, most of whom are at New York University School of Medicines Bellevue Hospital Centre, has found that parents whose children watch non-educational TV programs like Spongebob SquarePants spend less time reading to their children or teaching them.At this point, parents reading this will probably be astonished. TV is so often a parents good friend, keeping children happily occupied(占时间)so that the adults can cook dinner, answer the phone, or take a shower. But, clearly, this electronic babysitter(保姆)is not an educational aid. It is best to make sure the babies are fast asleep if you have to watch TV. 1 According to th
