R.k.Narayan (1906-2001): one of the well-known and most widely read Indian novelists writing in English. He lived to the age of 95, writing for more than 50 years, and publishing till he was 87. He wrote 14 novels, five volumes of short stories, a number of travelogues and collections of non-fiction, and English translation of Indian epics, and the memoir My Days. 2. The Abstract of the Text“Like the Sun” is a very interesting story about a small social experiment of practicing truth. It reveals the way that human beings handle the truth where human relationships are concerned. Truth, as is proved convincingly through the story, is like the sun. As we cannot look the sun straight in the face, we can hardly give or accept the absolute truth on most occasions. n General Idea Text DivisionPart 1 (para1) introduces the topic and the thesis statement.Part 2 (para2-3) is about Sekhars two trials of practicing truth.Part 3 (para4-34) a long story of practicing truth.General IdeaPara 1 :( Ss read this paragraph and get the general idea of the paragraph) Truth, Sekhar reflected, is like the sun.He made a day as a special day to have an experiment of giving and taking absolute truth.n Language Points1. the essence of human relationships consisted in tempering truth so that it might not shock. : basically, to handle human relationships was to make the truth less severe or cruel so that it would not hurt. E.g. The beauty of air travel consists in its speed and ease.For her, happiness consists in watching television and reading magazines. 2. This day he set apart as a unique day.: He made this day a special day.E.g. The separation of words into sense groupings is one of the things that sets this dictionary apart.What set her apart from the other candidates for the job was that she had a lot of original ideas. 3. But Sekhar cut him short with: “Far from it. He always struck me as mean and selfish.”: But Sekhar interrupted him as being mean and selfish.E.g. The president had to cut short his visit because of the crisis back home.His jokes didnt strike Jack as being very funny. 4. He had shirked this work for weeks.: he had been avoiding this work for weeks.E.g. If you shirk your responsibilities now, the situation will just be much harder to deal with next month.5. Ive engaged a drummer and a violinist to accompany me-this is the first time Im doing it full-dress and I want your opinion.: Ive hired a drummer and a violinist to accompany me-this is the first time Im doing it formally and I want you to give me some comments.E.g. Why dont you engage a carpenter to make you some kitchen units?a full-dress ceremony 6. But he never expected his musical inclinations would lead him to this trial: But he never expected his love of music would cause him to undergo this test. E.g. Ignoring safety procedures led to a tragic accident. The books main theme is youth and the trials of growing up. 7. Ive spent a fortune on it behind closed doors.: Ive spent a lot of money on it in private. E.g. The issue was considered so controversial that the government held the discussion behind closed doors.8. “God hasnt given me a child, but at least let him not deny me the consolation of music,” the headmaster said, sadly, as they walked.: “God hasnt given me a child, but at least let him allow me the comfort of music,” the headmaster said, sadly, as they walked.E.g. I didnt know what to say-I just offered a few words of consolation.9. “All right, granted,” the headmaster said generously.: “All right, approved,” the headmaster said kindly.E.g. I wonder if you could grant me a favor.10. All the time the headmaster was singing, Sekhar went on commenting within himself.: Throughout the time he headmaster was singing, Sekhar kept on criticizing it in his heart.E.g. He was just commenting that people were getting married later nowadays.11. His face was bladed with perspiration: His face was covered with small drops of sweat. E.g. After an hour of exercise, your face will be beaded with sweat. 12. No judge delivering a sentence felt more gained and helpless: He felt more gained and helpless than any judge who was giving a punishment.E.g. light sentence (轻刑) heavy sentence (重刑) 5-year sentence(5年徒刑) suspended sentence(缓刑) non-custodial sentence(无监管服刑) jail/prison sentence(监禁) life sentence 终身监禁13. Sekhar noticed that the headmasters wife peeped in from the kitchen, with eager curiosity: Sekhar saw that his headmasters wife looked in secretly from the kitchen in a very curious way. E.g. We peeped at the children through a hole in the fence.14. The drummer and the violinist put away their burdens with an air of relief: The drummer and the violinist removed their musical instruments, looking relieved.E.g. Venice in winter has an air of mystery and sadness.15. Truth, he reflected, required as much strength to give as to receive: He thought that it took as much strength to give the truth as to take it. E.g. Please telephone this number if you require any further information. Success in this job requires working as a team. 16. All kinds of worries seemed to be in store for him: All kinds of worries seemed to be waiting for him. E.g. You never know whats in store for you. 17. That meant all nights sitting up!.: That was to say, Sekhar had to stay up all night! E.g. The book was so interesting that I sat up all night reading it.Ill be late tonight, so dont sit up for me.18. “Yes, sir,” Sekhar said, feeling that sitting up all night with a hundred test papers was a small price to pay for the luxury of practicing truth.: “Yes, sir,” Sekhar said, feeling it was worthwhile to stay up all night with a hundred test papers for something as costly as being absolutely truthful.
