He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem: It seemed impossible to get the 42 to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible 43 whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a 44 sewing machine. When he tried to do so, Howe run into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But 45 the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem. Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle, he should make it run through a small hole in the canter of the needle. This was the simple idea that 46 made Howe design and build the first really 47 sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This 48 but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all sorts of 49 that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious parts in a special way. It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.41. _ 42. _ 43. _ 44. _ 45. _ 46. _ 47. _ 48. _ 49. _ .Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. But 13% of themroughly four a dayare serious enough to 59 a pilot to change course. The most common of the serious emergencies 60 heart trouble, strokes(中风), and difficult breathing.Let s face it : plane rides are 61 . For starters, cabin pressures at high altitudes are set at roughly what they would be if you lived at 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. Most people can tolerate these pressures pretty 62 , but passengers with heart disease may experience chest pains as result of the reduced amount of oxygen flowing through their blood. 63 common flight problem is deep venous thrombosisthe so called economy class syndrome (综合症). 64 happens, don t panic.50.A.called B.addressed C.informed D.surveyed51.A.accident B.condition C.incident D.disaster52.A.faced B.treated C.identified D.provided53.A.for B.to C.by D.through54.A.before B.since C.when D.while55.A.collected B.conducted C.discovered D.published56A.by B.of C.with D.in57.A.amount B.average C.sum D.number58.A.significant B.heavy C.common D.serious59.A.require B.inspire C.engage D.command60.A.include B.consist C.imply D.contain61.A.enjoyable B.stimulating C.boring D.stressful62.A.seriously B.reluctantly C.easily D.casually63.A.Any B.One C.Other D.Another64.A.Whatever B.Whichever C.Whenever D.WhereverSection BDirections: Reading the following three passages. A “Distant comets look like fuzzy drops” says the Scottish-born astronomer. “They are actually quite easy to spot if you know what youre looking for.” He admits that the filtering(过滤的) software he uses makes his job easier, but there is no doubt about his skill. He has now discovered 54 comets, 20 or so more than his nearest “competitor”, friend and respected US astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker. As he tracked the comet s slow progress towards Earth over the next few months, it grew steadily brighter until it became visible to the naked eye. Comet McNaught, also known as the Great Comet of 2007, became the brightest comet seen in more than 40 years and was the find of a lifetime for its discoverer. McNaught has had a longstanding passion for sky watching ever since he was given Timothys Book of Space when he was about seven. “I used to sit at my window watching the stars each night,” he says. He once saw a bright meteor, which only added spark to his youthful interest. McNaught was also inspired by the work of Minoru Honda, a Japanese astronomer who discovered 12 comets between 1940 and 1968 and by the great English astronomer George Alcock, who found five comets and five exploding stars under cloudy British skies with binoculars(双筒望远镜). But when McNaught went to St Andrews University in Scotland to study astronomy and physics, he gave up “through sheer laziness”, he says. He left, and only went back to university a year later to complete his studies in psychology. Despite this aberration(偏差), his first job as an astronomer a few months after graduating in 1980 saw him back on track; he was employed in the city of Birmingham in Britain as an observer on a satellite-tracking telescope used to determine the density(密度) and winds in the Earths upper atmosphere and the precise shape of the Earth which was inferred from changes in satellite orbits. Three years later, this job took him to Siding Spring. “It was only supposed to be for a year, but no one else wanted to make the move so I stayed,” he laughs. That was 25 years ago.65.McNaught made his job easier with the help of _. A.telescope B.the filtering software C.binoculars D.glasses66.According to the passage, we know that_. A.Carolyn Shoemaker discovered 54 comets B.McNaught and Carolyn Shoemaker didn t get along well with each other C.McNaught looked down upon Carolyn Shoemaker D.McNaught and Shoemake are good friends and they are in competition with each other67.Which of the following statements is NOT true? A.Comet McNaught can become visible to the naked eye. B.Comet McNaught is the brightest comet seen in more than 40 years. C.McNaught began to take an interest in astronomy when he was given Timothys Book of Space at the age of seven. D.McNaught studied astronomy at St Andrews University until 1980.68.The underlined phrase can be replaced by _. A.starting studying astronomy again B.travelling by train C.going back to school D.realizing his ambitionBMARS - that s where more than 450 Chinese people want to live. They ve applied for one-way tickets to the red planet offered by Mars One, an organization based in the Netherlands hoping to establish a human colony there in 2023. On its website, it says it hasn t yet begun its astronaut selection program, but had so far received in excess of 37,000 applications, including more than 450 from China. The non-profit organization announced its private spaceflight project in June last year saying that it would send a communications satellite and pathfinder to Mars by 2016 and land four astronauts in 2023 to establish a permanent settlement. After that, a new set of four astronauts would arrive every two years.Mars One is planning a reality TV show where the audience can select the astronauts and watch as they prepare for the epic(史实) journey. It said it had developed “a precise, realistic plan based entirely upon existing technologies.” It said the primary personal attributes of a successful astronaut would be emotional and psychological stability, supported by personal drive and motivation.“Once on Mars, there is no means to return to Earth. Mars is home,” its website says. “A grounded, deep sense of purpose will help each astronaut maintain his or her psychological stability and focus as they work together toward a shared and better future.” It lists five key requirements for applicantsresiliency(弹性), adaptability, curiosity, ability to trust, and creativity. Successful candidates will receive a minimum of eight years of training before they leave Earth behind. Ma Qiang, a 39-year-old Sichuan Province native, told Beijing Youth Daily he hoped to be selected to make his life “worth living.” Ma said he survived the 2008 earthquake in the southwest province but had been deeply affected by what he had seen. After that, Ma wanted to do something to make his life worth living, he told the newspaper, and a journey to Ma
