Please talk about it. The thing I do most in my spare time is reading. So I suppose it is myhobby all right. I like reading all kinds of books; though I should say Ilike detective books the best. I do not only read those so-called classicdetective books, for example, Judge Dee, Sherlock Holmes or HerculePoirot. I read all that I can get, including hundreds of unknown mysteries.I read books whenever I have time. I usually take books with me so whenI can sit I will begin reading. Some people enjoy reading newspapers ormagazines but I find less interest in these because you will finish readingsomething too quickly, without much time to reflect in your mind and dosome thinking, which is the most interesting to me, though it is alsotime-consuming. I used to read books in bed. Now I have changed thishabit for it is harmful to your sleep. And if you cannot sleep well youcannot enjoy reading. I think that is all about my hobby: reading.UNIT TWO Talking about past TOPIC: Please talk about one experience you can never forget. I went to Greece during the winter last year. That is one experience Ican never forget. I shouldnt say I have good impressions about the Greekcab drivers because I got fooled around by one of them. When the planelanded, I went out of the airport. It was 9 or so in the evening. So it wasalready very dark outside. I took the first cab I saw and asked the driverto take me to the hotel I booked. I thought he understood me because hestarted driving immediately. In darkness we did not exchanged any otherwords until 30 minutes later. The cab went on and on but I did not seeanything like a city or a town. I got worried so I began to ask the driverwhere we were. It was then that I found that he did not speak English, orpretended he did not. So I wrote the address on a paper for him. Another30 minutes later we arrived at the hotel. He charged me 80 Euros for thetrip, which was actually 15 minutes by car if driving properly!UNIT THREE Stating Intentions TOPIC: Do you want to learn English well? Why?As a student I am fairly old now. As a language learner I am not talented as well. But I am determined to learn English, and I have made up my mind to learn it well. In my secondary school and college I studied English for some time. However, I did not quite realize how important English can be later in my life. After graduation from college I went to work in a foreign trade company. I seldom dealt with foreigners because Iwas not responsible for negotiating with them. But once an American client came directly to our company, asking to see our manager. It happened that nobody else was available at that time so I had to speak tohim. It took us more than 10 minutes to figure out what was happening.And since I insisted that I shall cope with it alone I thought my colleaguesaround were secretly laughing at me. I apologized to the client when hewas leaving. But he told me it was quite all right. “You know what!” hesaid “I am learning Chinese myself and I do understand how difficult it isfor you to learn English. But I suppose I have begun and I will continuehowever difficult it is.” I am greatly encouraged by him and I also believeI can learn my English well.UNIT FOUR Requesting TOPIC: What do you think of our distance learning methods? What kind of suggestions can you make towards them?I think our Distant Learning School is a reflection of the advance technologies we possess nowadays and it helps us greatly in learning. For example, though I live in Hangzhou I do not have to come to the classroom for class because the class is recorded and I can download itand watch it as if I were in the real class. I can take 3 or 4 class togetheror in any other way I like. I can also communicate through BBS with theteacher. All is convenient and fast, especially for us who are workingduring day time while we have to finish our study and homework in theevenings and weekends.However, there are certain flaws as well in the current system. Wecannot communicate face to fact with the teacher. Though we can writeemails, our questions usually got answered long after they got solved bythemselves or forgotten by us. Since we are also very busy we tend towatch all the recorded classes at the end of the semester, just before thefinal examination. Therefore I sincerely hope there are more assistantsworking to maintain the system. So we can contact them on-line in a Larger time-scale and get our problems solved immediately. They can also monitor us better in our learning process.UNIT FIVE Offering to do something TOPIC: Do you like the Olympic Games? Which games do you like best?Well, we were quite excited when we knew the 2008 Olympic Gameswill be held in Beijing. We were quite proud of our country and our capital and we were very happy that we can witness the grand eventinside our homeland.On the other hand, it is very difficult to say what we can really do forthe Olympic Games. Of course we are going to cheer for our athletes andour teams. I suppose many of us will cheer for other athletes and otherteams we like. I think a lot of us like watching football, basketball,volleyball or other team sports while many others like swimming, or trackand field. Many people will gather in Beijing to watch their favoritesports and favorite athletes. So for them to buy the tickets is veryimportant. I am not very sure when tickets will be available. But theearlier we get them in our hands the better.For me myself I am going to practice my English for the next fewmonths. I already registered as a volunteer worker in the Games. So I willhave a great deal to do with helping the foreign guests out and I supposethat will be a real test for my English.UNIT SIX Describing Things TOPIC: Do you keep pets? If so please tell about it/them. If not please tell why.I have kept pets. I still keep some. And I do plan to keep pets in thefuture. I did not choose to keep pets at the very beginning. Your parentchose your pets, as the rule went in the past, you know. But I soon beganto like them. They can give you so much fun, as you can imagine. Myfirst pet is a cat. It was very sick and was almost dying when it came tomy family. We were never aware that we had vets as a profession butanyway there were no one available at that time. So my parents fixedsome medicine for her. And in a week it got better and soon it could walkaround. In the first month it climbed to the high wall around our houseand caught its first mouse!Of course keeping pets will bring its own trouble. For example, ourcat and later, cats usually want to sleep on beds. And they eat anythingthey want to eat. This would mean they stole things they were notsupposed to take, fish, meat, eggs, or even living chicken! But anywaythey are worth the trouble. They are like kids to you. So I like pets. And Iwill continue to keep them.UNIT SEVEN Describing places and people TOPIC: Please describe one place you have been to.I would like to talk about Qingdao city, where I went to a few yearsago. I went there on business. But I took a few more days off as myvacation to stay there. I have heard of Qingdao so often in the past that Iwas almost disappointed at first sight. It was not so modern as I hadthought. Some of the buildings were quite old and wanted renovation. Itwas certainly a tourist city because you could see so many people in thestreets. It was crowded everywhere!However, since I am living in Hangzhou, which is a tourist city as welland I had enough experience dealing with such situation I went quickly toplaces where people seldom went, which were places not so well knownas tourist sites but as beautiful. So I began to have some peace andenjoyed some quiet beach and the Lao Mountain and bought many cheapsouvenirs for my family. I found Qingdao better than I thought earlier inthe end and I plan to go there this summer again for my summer vacation.UNIT EIGHT Giving Opinions TOPIC: What kind of transportation do you like best? Why?Unlike others, I think the only means of transportation I prefer wouldbe cars. If possible, I would like to go to any place in my small cozyBMW. I am not a rich person. But I am very generous for costs spent oncars. Up to now I have spent hundreds of thousands of money on it. Iwould like my car to be clean and shining at all times. And I enjoy goingaround in it. Of course oil price is becoming more and more expensivenowadays. But no worry. I think I can still afford it. And I do care aboutour environment. So I will not create unnecessary pollutions with my car.When I travel to other cities out of our province I have to take planesand trains. But if time and road conditions permit, I would never hesitateto drive my car to the destination. I dont like to share some limited spacewith a crowd strange to me. I will easily get depressed in suchsurroundings. On the other hand, on sunny clear days, I would also enjoyexcursions or mountaineering on foot.UNIT NINE Talking about similarities, differences and preference TOPIC: Should men and women be treated equally? If yes, how and if not, why?I think men and women should be treated equally. As we often say,men are born equal. Of course, that is not to say that we should be treatedin exactly the same way. This would only mean that we should enjoyequal rights. Take work for example, I think they should enjoy equalaccess to job opportunities and promotions, equal pay for the same work,etc. Men and women are very different, both physically and mentally. SoI dont think its desirable for them to do the same thing. But theirdifference should be valued and considered as opportunities for them todevelop their own abilities and talents. Or otherwise, take family role forexample, the mother is usually suitable to take care of housework, thechildren while the men should think more about bread earning and heavylabor work at home.Therefore, treating men and women equally means a good understanding of the differences between men and women so good planscan be made to have them work to their full capacity and thus also makeboth happy about their respective life.UNIT TEN Making suggestions and giving advice TOPIC: What kind of job do you think is ideal for you? Why? .My ideal job is doing business. Its very difficult to define what kind ofbusiness I want to deal with. I should say I want to do business with highadded value in knowledge, for example, IT, or Bio products. But to startwith I am also willing to be a book dealer, or selling things that I can laymy hands on. I like to be a businessman because almost all my familymembers are businessmen. So from my childhood I was watchingbusiness people and listening to their talks. I found something like magicin the business circles. I am not saying that everything I heard and sawwere perfect. But they certainly attracted me. From then on I made up mymind that I should be a businessman in the future.To begin my career I chose to study economy in college. And fromthe third year I began to work part time in a trading company. I started my own company immediately after graduation.My ideal working environment is one that encourages everyone in itto bring their potentials to full play. And certainly the by-product is a lotof pay to everybody. That seems great to me. And I am working hard toachieve this goal.UNIT ELEVEN Dealing with moods TOPIC: What kind of suggestions can you make to those depressed? Why?To begin with, I dont think it is a shameful thing to get depressed intodays society. Anyway we are faced with a lot more pressure nowadaysthan two decades, or even just one decade ago. It is not an uncommonthing to go to t
