(10分)阅读理解 In the summer between my first year and second year in college, I was invited to be an instructor(辅导员)at a high school camp. On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games, I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak. I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied, No, I really dont want to do this. I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldnt be right to force him either. Actually, the boy didnt need a close talk but a friend. At lunch the next day, I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone. I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boys name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend time with him when they could. The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise, I found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two girls. I couldnt believe it was the same person. In October of my second year, I received a phone call from Tommys mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and died. I offered my deep sadness. The mother said, Tommy mentioned you so many times. I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference to Tommy during his last months. At that moment, I realized how easy it was to give a bit of yourself every day. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. Go to north London, to the coolest part of the city-Camden. It is a 9-mile man-made river that goes through London. We went into a big market and saw crazy signs, fun T-shirts, and things like hand-made earrings for sale. We bought Chinese fried noodles. It tasted very different from the noodles we make at home, and we ate it with a fork instead of chopsticks!Camden is famous for the punk(朋克)style that started in the 1970s. Punks walked around with bright pink and green hair, broken clothes with safety pins, metal buttons(纽扣)and pierced ears and lips. Punk music shops played loud, heavy rock music. But there were also groups of hippies(嬉皮士)with big sweaters. They sat in cafes drinking soymilk, with black clothes, black lipstick and painted white faces.Besides all these “normal” people, a lot of famous people come to Camden. Actor Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean lives there.Camden is especially known as a home to famous musicians. The young oranges are growing well in Floridas weather. Warm sunshine and gentle rains, along with Ed Rawlings expert care, will produce a good crop(收成)of oranges this year. However, Ed has to guard against Floridas changeable winter weather. In January and February, temperatures can destroy Eds entire orange crop. Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed is prepared for the frost(霜). When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his crop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer(层) of ice around the trees. Strange as it may sound, this thin layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm. What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice. The warmth of the heat it loses is taken in by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level. Ed has effectively used this method to save many orange crops. But Ed still faces difficulties. The trees must be watered at the exact moment the temperature drops to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity(数量)of water must be used. Too much water can form a thicker layer of ice that will break the trees branches(树枝). Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat, so Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered, and how much water should be used.Computer technology may help Ed with some of these worries. With equipment(设备), air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can calculate(计算) when the temperature will drop below freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently the trees should be watered. Ed finds looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer, and, his customers will have the benefits(利益) of computerage oranges.(1)The passage is mainly about_.A . a farmer expert cares for his orange treesB . the different uses of computersC . growing oranges in Floridas changeable weatherD . different ways of frost protection(2)Ed tries to protect his crop by_.A . using a wind machine to drive away the cold airB . equipping his orange trees with a computerC . watering it at the proper timeD . picking his fruit at the first sign of frost(3)According to the passage, the computer technology_.A . removes the need for frost protectionB . prevents temperature from droppingC . tells farmers why outdoor temperatures changeD . helps the farmer get a better harvest26.
