Learning situation analysis(1) Learning needs analysisWith the rapid development of Chinese automobile market, many famous automobile manufactures come to China. Car mechanics should master vocational English to read maintenance manuals,even can make a conversation in dealing with some faults. So, automobile repairing students have taken Automobile English course compulsorily since 2008 in our vocational school.(2) Students learning analysisStudents who will learn this lesson is in Grade Two in Auto repairing. After a year learning, most students can speak the main components in a car, even explain their functions with professional words in Chinese, on the contrary, they can speak very little professional words in English. They have possessed the basic knowledge about the structure of automobile and known the main components in the car. But students English level is much lower. Some of students are just like the beginners. Most of the students are lack of interests in learning English, and their English learning is passive and negative. Figure 1. Students learning situation analysis(3) DifficultyThe level of Students professional knowledge is much higher than that of their linguistic knowledge, that is to say, the students knowledge of their subjects specialism may be of a high level, while their linguistic knowledge is virtually nil. (4) Solutions In order to solve the problem, the teacher should respect both levels of students state. Combine students professional knowledge with vocational English learning. I designed three main activities to help students learn this lesson effectively. A. Apply students interests in major to learn vocational English.Comprehension precedes learning (Strevens, 1985). Considering students will use their existing knowledge to make the new information comprehensible. I asked students to draw a car as warm-up, and discuss the main components in a car. Students can speak the four main components in Chinese easily, because students have had the basic knowledge. This means students have been ready to learn the English words.B. help students learn by doing. As teachers we can influence what we teach, but what learners learn is determined by the learners alone. Learning is seen as a process in which the learners use what knowledge or skills they have in order to make sense of the flow of new information. So, I designed a make-up a car to explain the text. Most of students can understand the text easily in this way.C. Create a real communication scene to make students involve vocational role.Learners knowledge of communication should be actively exploited in second language learning. I design four repairing scenes, including engine fault, chassis fault, electrical system fault and the body. Learning is an emotional experience. So, our concern should be to develop the positive emotions by using pair and group work to build on existing social relationships and make the learning process interesting and fun. Language learning is to a large extent incidental, I just give some pictures and key words, the rest part can be designed by students, which is variety.2. Teaching material analysis(1) Introduction Automobile English we use is one of the Vocational English teaching materials, which are published by Higher Education Press. The character of Automobile English is simple, vocational and useful. Auto repairing students in a vocational school will master some professional English vocabularies and read simple manuals, even can communicate with guests in dealing with some problems by learning Automobile English. Unit 4 is the second part of this book, which is a general introduction of the car structure. The four main components in a car will be introduced in detail in the following units.(2) ContentThis lesson is the fourth unit of the book, which is about the structure of the automobile. The target of the lesson is to make students know English names of main components in a car. There are two parts: a dialogue and a text. The dialogue, which is in an auto repair workshop, is a discussion about the number of components in a car by using “there be”, and the text is an introduction of the four major parts: the engine, the chassis, the body and the electrical system. There are about 210 words in the text, including more than 15 professional vocabularies.(3) Teaching focus and teaching difficultyl Teaching focus Students can master the English names of main components in a car.l Teaching difficulty To my students, the dialogue as an output part, is a little more difficult to complete, and the text is a little long and professional, students will have some trouble in learning process. 3. Teaching objective I divide teaching objective into two parts: a basic part and an activation part, for students are in different levels. Those whose English levels are lower just complete the basic task, and those whose English levels are higher complete the activation task.Basic TaskActivation TaskKnowledge objectiveEnglish names of the four major components in a car.Over 10 English names of car components. Teaching objective4. Teaching steps The aim of this design is just to make Ss become main body in the whole lesson. There are only four main parts in my teaching steps( shown in figure 2), but students will do a lot of work in every step. So I give Ss much time to prepare and co-operate. I think if students can complete the tasks well, they also learn this lesson every wellFigure 2. Teaching stepsShown as fig.2 the teaching steps are described as below:Step1 : Warm-up - Draw and discuss To arouse students interests in learning this lesson, the teacher asks students to draw a car first, and this activity is preparation for the text. Then , discuss the main parts in a car, this step is to enlighten students speak the four main parts in a car, for students have specialist knowledge.Step 2: Tasksl Basic Task- make up a car with the four major componentsThe teacher has prepared more than four parts before class, and then asks students to make up a car with these components in class. The aim of this task is to make students learn by doing. In order to complete the task, students have to know the English namdes of the components and their functions. In fact, the text is about the function of the main components, students can understand the passage paragraph by paragraph with the teachers help, which is the difficult part to the students in this lesson.l Activation task - complete the conversationThe teacher designed four conversational scenes in auto repair workshop, which are related to a car problem. Every conversation is only given out the beginning part, and the rest needs to be completed by students with the key words given by the teacher. These scenes will be shown by CAI, which can construct the context for the students. Since its more difficult for students to listen and speak in English, students can do this part in pair-work or group work, and the teacher is the most important helper.
