Language knowledge: by the end of the class, the students are able to use the language points of UK to talk about the English Isles.b. Language skills: During the class, the students are supposed to be able to:n Skim the text for the main idean Scan the text for specific informationn Express themselves by what they have learned2) Educational objectives: a. Affects: arouse the students interests in Englishb. Learning strategy: build the students independent ability of learning as well as their cooperate spiritc. Cultural awareness: inspire the students curiosity of English culture, broaden their horizon 3) Personal objectivesa. Be a better guide for the students reading comprehension.b. Try to use more English during the class.4 Focal points1) Help the students to get a comprehensive understanding of the reading material by various reading strategies.2) Encourage the students to use the expressions to talk about the English islands. 5 Difficult pointsImprove the students comprehension using of English by the integrity of listening, speaking and reading.6 Procedures and Time Allotment6.1 Stage 1 Getting ready (3mins)Step1. GreetingsT: Good morning, everyone!Ss: Good morning, Miss Qiu!T: Sit down, please!Step2. RevisionGuide the students to review what they have known about the English IslesT: Boys and girls, last time, we learnt something about the British Isles. Do you still remember?Ss: Yes, London Bridge.T: OK, now please tell me about London Bridge.S1: Its a bridge over the River Thames, connecting the city of London and Southwark.6.2 Stage 2 Pre-reading (5mins)Step1. Pictures PresentationShow the students some pictures of the English Isles, meanwhile ask them some simple questions.T: Today, well touch on the reading part of this unit. Firstly, Id like share with you some pictures.T: OK, boys and girls, look at this beautiful view, what is it?Ss: The estate of England.T: How about this picture? Do you like it?Ss: Scotland skirt.S1: I was dreaming of having one when I was a little girl.T: S1: Step2. PredictionThe students are supposed to make some prediction according to the title and pictures in the book.T: Do you know the meaning of “Isles?”Ss: T: “Isles” looks like the word “islands”, so we can guess the English isles mean the English islands.T: What do you know about Ireland? From these two pictures, can you guess what the passage may tell us?S1: S2: Rationale intention: the purpose of this stage is to facilitate while-reading activities. The students interest in the subject matter off the text might be aroused by creating expectations.6.3 Stage 3 While-reading (18mins)Step1. SkimmingThe students are required to find out the main idea of each paragraph by reading quickly.T: Just now, all of have done a very good job. Now, Ill give you 3 mins. Please read the text as quickly as possible. After your reading, try to find out the topic sentences and main ideas with your partner.S1: The main idea of the first paragraph is“the diversity of the Great Britains culture.”S2: S3: Step2. Detailed readingGroup work:divide the whole class into several groups. There are 6 tasks for them to finish while reading. For each task, the first group who finish the task may get 1 point. After all the tasks are finished, the winners will be decided by the points.T: Now, lets read this text carefully. First, lets divide the whole class into 6 groups. All of you will finish the tasks one by one. The first group will get 1 point. At last, we will decide the best group by the points. Understand?Ss: Yes.For paragraph one T: OK, lets start! For the first paragraph, you will listen to the tape. After the listening, please answer some simple questions, look at these questions.Questions: A. What things are well known about the English Isles according to the tape, what else do you know?B. How many countries make up the Great Britain? For paragraph two T: OK, everyone, do you know where are the British Isles located? Ss: (giving different answers) T: Yes, I heard different kinds of answers. Now, please read this paragraph, and finish the task with your team-workers. (the same with task 3,4,5,6.)Step3. PresentationAfter each task, a group member will share their ideas with the whole class. During this stage, the students will be encouraged to discuss with each other.Rationale intention:According to the National English Curriculum, the teaching of reading should focus on developing students reading skills and maintaining students motivation for reading. While reading, the students ability of incorporating information should be improved. Thats the reason why in this stage, various tasks are designed.6.4 Stage 4. Post-readingStep1. ListeningThe students are required to underline some words and phrase on the screen while listening the whole text.T: Now, we got to know the culture, geography, climate, language and history of the British Isles. Next, lets listen to the tape of the whole text, use your pen to underline the important phrase.Ss: (speak out the phrases while I will write them on the blackboard)Step2. Oral work1) Finish the map on page 36T: Now, please turn to page 36. Lets finish this map together.S1: Scotland is in the northern part of Great Britain.S2: .S3: 2) The students are supposed to retell or produce some sentences about the English Isles using the words and phrases. Some students can also choose to retell some paragraphs.(firstly, the teacher may set an example, then the students describe the English Isles one by one.)T: Now, guys, look at the phrases on the screen.
