2018-2019学年度第一学期期中考试高三学年 英语试卷(满分120分 时间 100分钟)第一卷第一部分:阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分) AThis story took place when I was about 12 years old. Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are small birds only about 3 inches long. Each spring they migrate to America from Mexico and Central America. They spend summer here and then fly the 2,000 miles back in the fall. My Dad had just picked me up from school on one of the first cool days of fall. On our way home I saw a Hummingbird lying dead on the sidewalk. It had flown into the large plate glass and broke its neck. I picked up the tiny bird. I decided to take it home for burial. It seemed a shame for such a beautiful bird to be crushed by passersby. Little did I know that Hummingbirds can go into a state of hibernation (冬眠) during cold temperatures. While like this they might appear to be dead. As soon as the bird warms up, all of its functions will return to normal. About half way home I started to feel a small movement in my hands. I was quite startled. Evidently the hummingbird was NOT dead. The warmth from my hands was reviving (使恢复) the bird. When we got home Dad opened door for me and I stepped out of the car. I slowly and cautiously opened my hand. The hummingbird flew away to a nearby cornfield and was thrilled to be on his way south again. One of the most amazing things about hummingbird migration is that, after such a long journey, so many of them find their way back to the exact same location every spring. So maybe he was one of the hummingbirds I saw again the next year sipping nectar (花蜜) from the feeder hanging on our back porch. 1. Where do hummingbirds spend their summer?A. In North America. B. (212) 6744300CModern zoos are different from those built fifty years ago. At that time zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages with iron bars (栅栏). Although the zoo keepers took good care of them, many of the animals did not feel comfortable, and they often fell ill.In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions. The animals are given more freedom in larger places so that they can live as they would in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. Trees and grass grow in cages, and water flows through the places the animals live in. There are few bars; instead, there is often a deep ditch (沟), filled with water, which surrounds a space where several sorts of animals live together as they would naturally. In an American zoo, the visitors can walk through a special huge cage that is filled with trees, some small animals and many birds, and large enough for the birds to live naturally. In a zoo in New York, with the use of special nights, people can observe certain animals that are active only at night, when most zoos are closed. Some zoos have special places for visitors to watch animals that live in the desert or under water. Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare animals. For this reason, fifty years from now, the grandchildren of todays visitors will still be able to enjoy watching these animals.9. In modern zoos _. A. different kinds of animals are kept separately B. animals are no longer taken good care of C. animals have more freedom D. visitors can walk wherever they like10. In a modern zoo_ feel comfortable. A. the animals, not the visitors B. the visitors, not the animals C. neither visitors nor animals D. both visitors and animals11. In some zoos people can _. A. walk through special huge cages to watch all sorts of animals B. see animals which live in special conditions C. during the day observe animals that are active at night D. watch all rare animals that may not be seen in the future12 The main idea of the passage is that _. A. zoos are now places where animals can live naturally B. zoos are places where people can see animals from all over the world C. there should be old and modern zoos alike D. rare animals may soon die outDNowadays people are facing lots of threats (威胁) all over the world. A serious threat to farmers in many parts of the world is erosion (侵蚀). Erosion happens if a large area of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers. The rain and winds may gradually wash away, or blow away much of the topsoil. When this happens, crops of wheat and corn become weaker and weaker until nothing grows well. If erosion continues, it will turn good land into a desert. In the past, when erosion appeared, farmers sometimes moved to a new place to farm. Sometimes they could not move, but continued to try to grow food in the unhealthy soil. This caused them to_sink_into_poverty. Soon some people realized that there was little rich, fertile soil in the world. The government began to try to stop erosion. One of the first experiments to stop erosion began in the United States in 1933. The experiment was carried out in the area of the Tennessee River. Flood and bad farming in this area had ruined the land that had once been rich. As a result, most of the people living around the Tennessee River were very poor. The government built big dams across the river and stored the water for use during the dry season, when there was no rain. The government workers also helped the farmers to fertilize their soil and to learn new farming methods which could stop erosion. In the beginning, the farmers were not interested. But soon, good healthy crops began to appear on the land where new methods were used. Ten years after that the crops were extremely good. The great success of this experiment led to similar projects in other parts of the world. With the development of science and technology, people are trying to get rid of all the threats they are facing. However, its not an easy job, because at the same time people are polluting their homeland. 13. Which of the following statements is NOT true about the Tennessee River area?AIt was an area seriously affected by erosion. BIt used to be a poor and infertile land. CIt often suffered from floods. DIt has become a model for other parts of the world to follow. 14. In the third paragraph, “to sink into poverty” means_. Ato become very poor Bto lose topsoil in erosionCto become weaker and weaker until nothing grows wellDto return into a desert15. The main purpose of this passage is to tell people_.A. something can be done to prevent erosionB. the importance of using new farming methodsC. the serious result of erosionD. how erosion happens第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways。 16 Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test.
