Module 6 War and Peace Section AIn 1905,as part of his Special Theory of Relativity,Albert Einstein published the point that a large amount of energy could be released from a small amount of matter. This was expressed by equation Emc2(energymass times the speed of light squared)But bombs were not what Einstein had in mind when he published this equation. In 1929,he publicly declared that if a war broke out he would “refuse to do war service, direct or indirect.”His position would change in 1933,as a result of Adolf Hitlers coming into power in Germany.Einsteins greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built because some physicists feared that Germany might be working on an atomic bomb.Among those concerned were physicists Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner. But Szilard and Wigner had no influence with those in power. So in July 1939 they explained the problem to someone who did:Albert Einstein. After talking with Einstein,in August 1939,Szilard wrote a letter to President Roosevelt with Einsteins signature on it,which was delivered to Roosevelt in October 1939.Germany had invaded Poland the previous month;the time was ripe for action. That October research of abomb began but proceeded slowly because the invention of the atomic bomb seemed distant and unlikely. In April 1940 an Einstein letter, ghostwritten by Szilard, pressed the researchers on the need for “greater speed”As the realization of nuclear weapons grew near,Einstein looked beyond the current war to future problems that such weapons could bring. He wrote to his friend about his fear about the future use of the abomb. The atomic bombings of Japan occurred three months after Germany gave in.In November 1954,five months before his death,Einstein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb:“I made one great mistake in my life.when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made;but there was some justificationthe danger that the Germans would make them.”【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 1What can we learn about Szilard and Wigner?AThey were not as influential as Einstein.BThey were responsible for the invention of nuclear weapons.CThey had cheated their friend Albert Einstein.DThey had an intention to destroy the world.A解析:推理判断题。根据第三段中的“But Szilard and Wigner had no influence with those in power. So in July 1939 they explained the problem to someone who did:Albert Einstein.” A。2Einstein realized his mistake of _Acooperating with his workmatesBinventing the atomic bomb Cpublishing his equationDsigning the letter to President RooseveltD解析:细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“I made one great mistake in my life.when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made.” D。3Why did Einstein suggest making atom bombs?ABecause President Roosevelt asked him to do so.BBecause it was likely that Hitler would make them.CBecause he was not in favor of President Roosevelt.DBecause it was not necessary to do so.B解析:细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“Einsteins greatest role in the invention of the atomic bomb was signing a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt urging that the bomb be built because some physicists feared that Germany might be working on an atomic bomb.” B。4The best title for the passage would be “_”AA Story of Albert EinsteinBAlbert Einstein and the Atomic Bomb CIt Was Unfair for EinsteinDHow the Atomic Bomb Was InventedB解析:标题归纳题。 B。BIt was Halloween, which is a big deal when youre seven.I was sitting on the couch in my Sleeping Beauty costume, eagerly waiting for my dad to come home so he could take me trickortreating. My dad had been away on a business trip.He was supposed to return earlier that day, but now it was midnight. Finally I nodded_offThe next morning I woke up and guessed that my mom had already known something I wouldnt find out for another couple of days.It was my dad who had a new identity:a plane crash survivor. He told us about it later. It had been raining as he got on the plane home. The pilot was cleared for takeoff on one runway but turned a little too far and ended up taking off on another runway, one that was closed.Because of the rain, the pilot couldnt see the heavy construction equipment blocking the runway, and he crashed right into it.The left wing was torn off, the fuselage(机身) split in two, and fire shot through the middle of the plane.Nearly half of the passengers died, but amazingly, my dad was completely unhurt. After the crash, he couldnt breathe because of the smoke,so he ran toward the exit. When the plane wreckage(残骸) finally slid to a stop, my dad simply walked out.My dad told me when the plane crashed, his first thought was us.As sad as he felt at the thought of never seeing us again, he also felt a sense of relief that all his financial worries would be over. When he survived, he saw it as a second chancebut not the kind where he gave up everything. He valued his second life, so Dad sold his old business and started a new one.Im so proud of my dad for this.I also think the quality time with my dad is precious.Ill enjoy it to the fullest.【解题导语】在万圣节的晚上,作者等她父亲回家带她参加万圣节活动,但等到第二天父亲才到家。 5What does the underlined part “nodded off” in Paragraph 1 mean?ARead a book to kill time.BStayed up
