the best teacher but it is not a particularly good teacher You might think that Winston Churchill or perhaps Mark Twain spoke those words but they actually come from James March a professor at Stanford University and a pioneer in the field of organizational decision making For years March possibly be wisest philosopher of management has studied how humans think and act and he continues to do so in his new book The Ambiguities of Experience He begins by reminding us of just how firmly we have been sticking to the idea of experiential learning Experience is respected experience is sought experience is explained The problem is that learning from experience involves serious complications 复杂化 ones that are part of the nature of experience itself and which March discusses in the body of this book In one interesting part of the book for example he turns a doubtful eye toward the use of 6 stories as the most effective way of experiential learning In our efforts to make stories interesting he argues we lose part of the complicated truth of things He says The more accurately reality is presented the less understandable the story and the more understandable the story the less realistic it is Besides being a broadly knowledgeable researcher March is also a poet and his gift shines through in the depth of views he offers and the simple language he uses Though the book is short it is demanding Don t pick it up looking for quick easy lessons Rather be ready to think deeply about learning from experience in work and life 59 According to the text James March is A a poet who uses experience in his writing B a teacher who teachers story writing in university C a researcher who studies the way humans think and act D a professor who helps organizations make important decisions 60 According to James March experience A is overvalued B is easy to explain C should be actively sought D should be highly respected 61 What can we learn from Paragraph 3 A Experience makes stories more accurate B Stories made interesting fail to fully present the truth C The use of stories is the best way of experiential learning D Stories are easier to understand when reality is more accurately described 62 What s the purpose of this text A To introduce a book B To describe a researcher C To explain experiential learning D To discuss organizational decision making C Doctors sometimes prescribe light therapy to treat a form of depression in people who get too little morning sun But too much light at other times may actually cause such mood disorders Long lasting exposure to light at night brings depression a new study finds at least in animals The new data confirm observations from studies of people who work night shifts says Richard Stevens of the University of Connecticut Health Center Mood disorders join a growing list of problems including cancer obesity and diabetes that can occur when light throws life out of balance by disturbing the biological clock and its timing of daily rhythms In the new study Tracy Bedrosian and Randy Nelson of Ohio State University exposed mice to normal light and dark cycles for four weeks For the next four weeks half of the mice remained on this schedule and the rest received continuous dim light throughout their night Compared with mice exposed to normal nighttime darkness those getting dim light at night lost their strong preference for sweet drinks a sign they no longer get pleasure out of activities they once enjoyed Bedrosian says In a second test mice were clocked on how long they actively tried to escape a pool of water Those exposed to night lights stopped struggling and just floated in the water a sign of 7 behavioral despair 10 times as long as the mice that had experienced normal nighttime darkness All symptoms of depression disappeared within two weeks of the mice returning to a normal light dark cycle the researchers report The scientists also could quash the behavioral symptoms by injecting 注射 the brains of animals with a drug that prohibits the activity of certain molecules linked with human depression This finding further suggests that light at night may cause something related to depression Human studies linking nighttime light and mood disorders are important but can t easily detect molecular underpinnings 分子基础 as animal studies can says George Brainard of Thomas Jefferson University The new work he says suggests that the change of the biological clock by light at night can be an extremely powerful force in regulating biology and behavior 63 After being exposed to continuous nighttime light the mice A changed their preferences B escaped from the water more eagerly C remained active as before D showed less interest in their favorites 64 What does the underlined word quash in Para 4 probably mean A study B predict C ease D cause 65 We can learn from the last paragraph that A light at night may have practical value B the biological clock is beneficial to humans C human mood disorders cannot be healed easily D human studies are more important than animal studies 66 What is the main idea of the passage A Nighttime light may foster 促进 depression B A drug has been found to cure mood disorders C The study on animals can be applied to humans D Human biological clock can be controlled by light D The Great Gatsby was not well received when it was published in 1926 F Scott Fitzgerald appeared to destroy the American Dream where in anyone with enough hard work could get rich and have whatever they wanted from life He exposed the truth about such myths in this classic book Basically the plot could be described as follows Poor boy goes East in search of wealth bored and dissatisfied with inactive Mid West country life He meets the super rich there attends parties and makes friends with one man in particular a lonely millionaire of uncertain origins Jay Gatsby He becomes involved with these rich but immoral people the worst of whom are his own cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom He observes with dawning recognition the corruption in their lives how lacking in human values or ethical beliefs they seem to be He watches tragedy unfold brought about by the handlings of the wealthy and visited on the poorer characters 8 He remains the only friend of Gatsby arranging his funeral and mourning his death and possibly the death of his own American Dream He wakes up to the reality of what is important in life and decides to choose what is of value to him He returns to his origins having recognized the worth of his up bringing and the moral values it instilled He sees that money is not everything But let us look at this in a little more depth because the novel is much more complicated than those simple outlines above suggest The young man Nick Carraway aged 29 lived in a cottage on Long Island He was an apprentice 学徒 Wall Street trader and in 1920s when the novel is set this job represented a way to get rich the core value of the American Dream Gatsby was a millionaire who chased a dream too one of rekindling love with Daisy Nick s cousin a bored rich totally unfeeling and spoilt woman Her rich husband Tom Buchanon a businessman was also less than moral flattering his mistress Myrtle Wilson the wife of a garage owner It was George Wilson s love for Myrtle that brought about the tragedy contained in the Gatsby plot Gatsby wanted to recapture his dream of love So he began an affair with Daisy she was flattered and bored This action helped to erode Nick s illusions and show what wealth can do to people Gatsby suffered from the realization that Daisy was not the wonderful person he dreamed of but a shallow and materialistic person Eventually Tom Buchanan suspected what was happening between Gatsby and Daisy and confronted Gatsby It was soon after this that Daisy ran Myrtle Wilson down while driving Gatsby s yellow automobile The tragedy was begun when Tom Buchanan put the idea
