综合教程AN INTEGRATED ENGLISH COURSEINTRODUCTION综合英语I综合教程ANINTEGRATEDENGLISHCOURSE2010年 伍 红2010-10-7INTRODUCTIONGood Afternoon Ladies and GentlemenToday, were going to take an overview of the course first. With it, you may know well what preparation you need for each class, what activities you may take in class and what tasks you ought to fulfill after each unit. So if possible, you can take notes on them. This would take about 30 minutes. Then we can spare time for self-introduction. It is very important for you to know each other well, for better understanding could help you to trust each other and then you could probably take more willingness for collaboration. As you are clear about what we are going to do and the importance of doing so now let me begin with the introduction to the course.Introduction to the CourseThis course is 综合英语. The class hours and rooms are 1st, 2nd and 3rd periodMonday In R24031st, 2nd and 3rd periodWednesdayIn R22025th and 6th periodFriday In R2403The textbook for this term is 综合教程 (AN INTEGRATED ENGLISH COURSE Book 1) It is one of the textbooks in a series, namely, Book 1, Book 2, Book 3 and Book 4. Each book follows the same compiling pattern, but with an increasing complexity of language waiting for all of you here to explore. The following draft of Book 1 may help you to form a quick general idea about what you are going to read and hopefully it serves as a guide for the flexibility of your study.Reading the texts in Book 1, especially Text A in each unit, can help you understand the world better since they mainly deal with social issues you may encounter with in your growth. It seems that you may just take a journey a journey of growing and becoming a mature adult in which you may also experience some bitterness and happiness like those persons in the stories, such as the close tie with family and emotional departure (unit 1, unit 12 and unit 16), disinterested help (unit 3), forever friendship (unit 5) finally you may take a thorough thinking on the society The code of conduct (unit 2, unit 11 and unit 13)Education (unit 6 and unit 8)The development of technology (unit 9)The splendid of entertainment (unit 10)The cultural issues in international communication (unit 14 and unit 15)Through reasoning and arguing, you may form some of your own viewpoints toward the world, and then you could build your establishment in the world. This is very important in your university life.As we know, we may deal with reading materials in different ways. If we take a perspective of linguistic style or the rhetoric mode of writing, we find that those texts (Text A in each unit) can be regrouped as the following.Group 1 NarrativeUnit 1Unit 3Unit 5Unit 7Unit 12Unit 13Unit 15Unit 16SubgroupThe first-point-of-view singular form “I” modelUnit 1Unit 3Unit 5Unit 13Unit 15Unit 16Unit 12 (the third-point-of-view singular form, “She” model)Unit 7 Group 2 Expositive Unit 8Unit 9Unit 10Unit 11Group 3 ArgumentativeUnit 2Unit 6Unit 14Group 4 DescriptionUnit 4Based on these, we may fully understand “Reading for different purposes”.A. Reading for the idea and better understanding of the worldB. Reading to learn about the rhetoric mode of writingC. Reading for language-improvingD. Reading for skill acquisition (Text B in each unit)For this course, reading is one of the important aspects. Another vital aspect is language-improving. As usual, by reading we try to make full analysis of particular uses of language including grammar rules and choices of diction and thus appreciate the true aesthetic of language for our own proper or appropriate use of English. Talking about grammar rules, youve known well about them since you have been dealing with them for more than 10 years. What you need to do now in university, personally speaking, is to review them in a systematic way and combine this process with the text analysis to realize that there are some particular functions with them respectively. Your tasks are to identify the functions through the analysis of linguistic features and apply them appropriately in your study. Now lets focus on vocabulary, one of the most difficult points in studying English. There are various approaches to deal with the problem. And Im sure you have also gathered your own ways to cope with this problem. For example, memorize them one by one in the wordlist or put them into Chinese or vice versa. My suggested way here is to learn them in categories. That will be illustrated in classes of next weeks. Here is a rough arrangement for the classes in this term.weekdateperiodcontentUnit7Oct.105th6th IntroductionOct.111st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions12nd3rd Reading for comprehensionOct.131st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text B8Oct.181st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions122nd3rdReading for comprehensionOct.201st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BOct.225th6thExercises9Oct.251st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions162nd3rdReading for comprehensionOct.271st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BOct.295th6thExercises10Nov.11st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions32nd3rdReading for comprehensionNov.31st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BNov.55th6thExercises11Nov.81st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions52nd3rdReading for comprehensionNov.101st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BNov.125th6thExercises12Nov.151st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions82nd3rdReading for comprehensionNov.171st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BNov.195th6thExercises13Nov.221st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions92nd3rdReading for comprehensionNov.241st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BNov.265th6thExercises14Nov.291st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions102nd3rdReading for comprehensionDec.11st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BDec.35th6thExercises15Dec.61st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions112nd3rdReading for comprehensionDec.81st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BDec.105th6thExercises16Dec.131st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions22nd3rdReading for comprehensionDec.151st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BDec.175th6thExercises17Dec.201st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions62nd3rdReading for comprehensionDec.221st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BDec.245th6thExercises18Dec.271st Dictation, phonetics, pre-reading questions142nd3rdReading for comprehensionDec.291st 2nd Language study3rd Reading Text BIntroduction of yourselfFollow the instruction to make
