Lead In Task1 Take a look at the pictures on the textbook to identify the popular TV shows. Match them with the descriptions and then write the names of these shows down on the line.Task2 Ask students to debate and state their opinions about the following two statements.“I was slightly brain damaged at birth, and I want people like me to see that they shouldnt let a disability get in the way. I want to raise awarenessI want to turn my disability into ability.” Susan Boyle“I want people to understand that from the minute Lady Gaga arrived, she created a new set of rules: Being different is good; embrace it.”Simon Cowell Part 2. Introduction of the Background Information Anyone of any age with some sort of talent can audition for the show. Acts compete against each other in order to gain the audience support while trying to win the first prize.Throughout the show, contestants must perform in front of the judges, and each year initial auditions have been held in front of a live audience. Auditions precede live semi-finals, where the final 45 contestants (24 in series 1, 40 in series 25) perform nightly for a week in order to impress the British public. Each night, two acts from each semi-final (the act with the most votes and another chosen by the judges from the acts in second and third place) progress to the live final.Part 3. Understanding of main ideasAsk students to complete the following summary according to the text, in order to have a understanding of the main ideas of the whole text and the structure as well.BackgroundTV talent shows are prevalent among the audience nowadays. These shows always follow the same format. There is usually a judging panel, consisting of Simon Cowell and other celebrities, who are searching for talented people.Opinions on talent shows Many of the contestants who enter talent shows have no real talent. I view them as the “bad.” Admittedly, most of the “bad” are willing to make a joke of themselves and only want “ 15 minutes of fame.”However, some of them have been led to believe that they are truly talented. In reality, they are just another evil aspect of a(n) money-grabbing plan.Of course, talent shows never fail to produce incredibly talented people, whom I consider the “good.” A(n) humble woman by the name of Susan Boyle shocked everyone by her beautiful voice. From her TV talent shows learned that one should never judge a book by its cover. Conclusion Talent shows can provide a great platform for talented people. Thanks to the shows, I have the opportunity to witness ordinary yet talented people.Part 4. Study of the Text and language points1. There is The X Factor, The Voice, American Idol, Britains Got Talent, and Americas Got Talent, to name just a few. 2) to name just a few: 举几个例子该词组暗含“还有很多例子,但不一一列举”的意思,常作插入语。e.g. My interests are painting, photography, music and reading, to name just a few. 【同义词组】for example for instance such as2. However, more often than not the audience is shown a series of “bad” auditions to add shock and entertainment value, which ultimately serves to raise the ratings and make greater profit for the production company. 2) more often than not: 往往,通常 e.g. More often than not, these people suffer a lot because they do not practice efficient time management. 英语中表示频率的词还有always、usually、frequently、often、sometimes、seldom、rarely、never 等。3. The audience gets a laugh and the TV network makes money, all at the expense of some innocent fools. 1) at the expense of 是指“以为代价”,其同义词组为at the cost of。 2) innocent(天真的,幼稚的)一词反映出作者对fools 的同情。4. All of these performers are a two-minute source of entertainment for the public. They are pointed at, laughed at and usually booed off the stage. 5. Now I have to admit, most of these “fools” enter shows like these willingly, purely for the laugh, to make a joke of themselves, and to get their“ 15 minutes of fame.” In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes. 6. They are assured of their talent and promised fame, but in reality, they are just another evil aspect of a much larger, money-grabbing scheme. They are misled into a belief that they have talent and will surely become famous. But the truth is that they have been fooled. They are just an evil part of a plan that aims at making money.7. a slap in the face: 一记耳光,羞辱e.g. It was a real slap in the face for him when she refused to go out for dinner with him.8. messy-haired: a. 9. . and then see poor Susan sent on her way. 此处的sent on her way 是指“被送下台,败走”,即sent on her way home。10. stunningly: ad. Sometimes people were stunningly rude to him. She is a stunningly attractive woman. 【拓展】stunning: a. 震惊的e.g. He suffered a stunning defeat in the election. A stunning display of fireworks lit up the sky. When they told me she had gone missing I was totally stunned.11. Never judge a book by its cover. 12. Dont exploit vulnerable people. Dont take advantage of weak people. 2) exploit: vt.( 为谋利而) 利用 e.g. He exploited his fathers name to get himself a job.13. Whether we are aware of the exploitative nature of these shows or not, most of us still watch them. 注意whether or not 在表示“是否”的时候,可以省略or not,在表示“不管是否”的时候,必须要有or not。e.g. Tom didnt know whether he should wear the green suit. Tom wanted to wear the green suit, whether it had a gravy stain or not.14. So what exactly is the appeal? Is it the shock value? Is it the awkward acts? Or is it the genuine talent thats presented? Or perhaps its a mix of all three.1) appeal: n. 吸引力e.g. The prospect of living in a city holds little appeal for me. 【拓展】appealing: a. The idea of not having to get up early every morning is rather appealing to me.2) a mix of sth.: 混合e.g. It was my final day at school, so I felt a mix of sadness and excitement as I arrived for class.3) Or perhaps the appeal of talent shows is the combination of the shock value, the awkward acts and the genuine talent.15. Tonight I witnessed the wonderfula group of shadowdancers named Attraction. 16. It is in moments like these that I am thankful for these shows. 1) 本句为强调句,被强调的部分为in moments like these。 2) be thankful for: 欣慰,感激,感谢e.g. I am thankful for all that I have and being able to share whatever I have with my loved ones.17. sothat从句The performance was very emotional.
