At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.1. M: Could you please explain the assignment for tomorrow, Miss Smith? W: Certainly. Read the passage and come to class prepared to discuss what youve read. Q: What is the probable relationship between the two speakers?(B)2. M: I cant find my pen. I need to write a letter. W: Ill look for it later. Right now I need your help to fix this bookshelf before I paint it. Q: What will they do first?(B)3. W: Jack worked as a secretary for three years. Then he became a newspaperman. After that, he started writing novels. M: I know. And he has been doing nothing else ever since. Q: What is the mans occupation now?(B)4. M: I counted numbers. I drank milk. I tried everything. But they just didnt help. W: It looks you have been overworking recently. Ill give you some sleeping pills. Take one pill before going to bed.Q: Where did this conversation most likely take place?(B)5. M: The bus is always late. W: I know. Ive been waiting for it for half an hour. If it doesnt come in another 15 minutes, Ill go on foot. Q: How much longer will the woman wait for the bus?(C)6. W: Why are you standing outside the room instead of entering? M: I tried all my keys in the lock, but it wont open. Q: What happened?(C)7. W: Jim looks nice in that new shirt, doesnt he? M: I still wish hed dress in that old shirt. Q: What does the man mean?(B)8. W: Cant you knock on the door before you enter my office next time?M: Sorry! Its just that Im in such a hurry. Q: How did the woman feel when she was speaking to the man?(B)9. M: Is your roommate looking forward to going home for the summer? W: Shes counting the days. Q: What can be inferred about the womans roommate?(D)10. W: Well, you have cleaned out the refrigerator this time. Nothing is left over.M: Oh, yes. I had a lot of work all day and a small lunch in the office. Q: What did the man do?(A)Section BDirections: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. Jim decided he would like to learn something new, so he checked out his local community college for evening classes, and signed up for a cooking course on Tuesday nights, a flower arranging class on Wednesdays, and a painting class on Thursdays. During the second week, Jim baked a cake in his cooking class. It was a disaster, and so hard that the teacher suggested Jim use the cake to hold the door open on hot days. Jim was no better at flower arranging. His first creation included so many plants that his teacher wondered if Jim was trying to make a rainforest instead of a decoration. That weekend, Jim painted a picture at home. He had intended to paint a snow-covered landscape, but the painting just looked like a white piece of paper. Then his dog came in from outside and shook mud all over the painting. Disappointed, Jim took it to class anyway the following Thursday. To Jims surprise, the art teacher praised him for his “original talent”. Jim learned that he had talent after all. 11. What did Jim learn on Wednesday evenings?(B)12. What was wrong with the cake Jim baked?(A)13. What did Jim try to paint at the weekend?(D)Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage. Pace refers to how fast or how slow you speak. If you speak too fast, you may be difficult to follow. If you speak too slowly, you risk losing the attention of your audience. If the audiences attention seems to be drifting away, try picking up your pace. Usually you dont know that you have been going too fast until someone tells you so after your speech is over. If you are told this, guard against this mistake in the future. In your next speech, write reminders on your note cards to slow down. Ideally, the speaker varies his or her pace. Speaking fast and then slowing down help keep the attention of the audience. Also, dont forget the benefits of pausing. A pause before or after a dramatic moment is a highly effective technique. The next time you are watching a comedian on television, watch how he or she uses pauses.14. What should you do if the audiences attention seems to be drifting away?(A)15. How do you avoid speaking too fast during a speech?(C)16. Whats the benefit of pausing?(D)Section CDirections: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.W: Arent you going for the job interview tomorrow?M: Thats right. I have to go at 10 oclock in the morning. I dont know how to get there, though.W: I can take you there in my car, if you like.M: Thanks a lot. Thats a great help. I must say, Im worried about this interview.W: Why?Youre the right person they are looking for. And I know they need engineers.M: I know, but I havent had much experience.W: I dont think that matters. Youre sure to get the job.M: Well, I dont know.W: Dont you want the job?M: Of course I do. I really need it. And theres another thing. I dont think Im good enough at languages. W: But your German is really good. I was impressed by the way you talked to those people we met on holidays last year.M: But I dont think I speak German well enough for doing business, and my French is terrible.W: Well, I dont agree. Your language is good.M: Its very nice of you to try to cheer me up, but I still dont think Im going to get the job. W: Well, well just have to wait and see, wont we?17. 10 18. I lived here once before, when I went to the graduate school. So Im used to the life in New York.M: When did you live here?W: Oh. Let me see, it must have been about eight years ago. Boy, the city has changed since then.M: I suppose so. I mean, theyve really cleaned up Times Square. It used to be so dirty. I mean, now its just full of tourists.W: Yeah. And the subways seem to run more on schedule now. M: Basically, I think the city is safer because we have more police officers on the street.W: Oh, thats for sure! But one thing I cant get used to is the noise, especially those garbage trucks! They come at five in the morning and are so loud.
